John Paul II begins with a question. What is the meaning of the Statement: “the flesh has desires contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires contrary to the flesh” (Gal5:17)? 

Then he addresses the human heart. And specifically Jesus Sermon on the mount about how we look at one another, and the battle for purity of heart. 

Now St Paul JPII says opens horizons before us that are even vaster. Christ came into the world/fallen world, world no longer filled with the Spirit but the world of the powers and principalities of Satan, demons who rule the fallen world. A world that God, Jesus Christ, enters to restore to the children of God, what has been lost. Their purity of heart as they battle the 3 fold concupiscence, Eyes, flesh and the Pride of life. 

Christ comes in to Redeem us, Save us…”Redemption of the body” also has a cosmic dimension, all of creation, but at its center stands man: man constituted in the personal unity of spirit and body. It is precisely in this man, in his “heart” and thus in all his behavior, that the redemption of Christ bears fruit, thanks to the powers of the Spirit that bring about justification, that is, that cause justice to “abound” in man, (Matt 5:20), “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

..we would have gone on, but thankfully dad, a 96-year-old world-war II veteran, wondered out loud, “most of this just doesn’t make rational sense.” He is right of course. It never does when the morally corrupt rule the world. I answered him, “dad, what is even more disconcerting is to think about how many citizens of our country not only vote the corrupt into office but go one further; they accept and condone their practices and policies. Do you want to know why? The answer comes from a prophet who saw all this unfolding sixty-years ago.

 “Only those who live by faith really know what is happening in the world; the great masses without faith are unconscious of the destructive processes going on, because they have lost the vision of the heights from which they have fallen.”—Bishop Fulton Sheen

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, the SWORD of the HOLY SPIRIT, that you may be able to withstand the evil day” (Eph 6:10-13).

"Life in the Flesh" or another way to put it, "the World without God," has desires contrary to the Spirit, the Holy Spirit. This life of sin and death runs deep within man. Original sin forms in us along with our body and soul and a conflict ensues. The body/flesh easily gets the upper hand. Our desires are impure (Romans 1:28-32). Our action confirms this in the evil man does to man. The man who lives "according to the flesh" is the man disposed only to that which comes "From the World": he is the man of the "senses" only, the man of the three-fold concupiscence.

Only the power of Christ himself working in man's innermost being through the Holy Spirit can free us from this bondage.  (Romans 8:5-11).

A few weeks ago at Edgewood Middle School in Highland Park Illinois a physical education teacher, who was assigned to teach "health" to the middle schoolers, got himself into trouble by going off script. Apparently, he asked questions that were not supposed to be part of the sex ed teaching for the day. Health class is where our children learn all about sex. Before starting the discussion, the teacher decided to have the students play "The Penis Game" as an icebreaker.
