In this episode we welcome back friend of the show Cory Anton to talk about anxiety disorders. We have a raw, and perhaps a little controversial conversation about the effects of coping skills with anxiety disorders, exposure response therapy, and tolerance building. Cory explains the difference between stress and anxiety disorders, how anxiety is created in our brain, and how reassurance culture plays a role into anxiety disorders.

Anxiety Disorders: people with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Often, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks).

These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time. You may avoid places or situations to prevent these feelings. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and continue into adulthood.

Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder.

A serial killer is typically a person who murders three or more people, usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them. Different authorities apply different criteria when designating serial killers. For example, while most authorities set a threshold of three murders, others extend it to four or lessen it to two. The FBI defines serial killing as "a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone".

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. ADHD also affects many adults. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought).

An estimated 8.4 percent of children and 2.5 percent of adults have ADHD. ADHD is often first identified in school-aged children when it leads to disruption in the classroom or problems with schoolwork. It can also affect adults. It is more common among boys than girls.

Attachment Theory:
The earliest research on adult attachment involved studying the association between individual differences in adult attachment and the way people think about their relationships and their memories for what their relationships with their parents are like. British psychologist John Bowlby was the first attachment theorist, describing attachment as a "lasting psychological connectedness between human beings." The Four Attachment Styles are: Secure, Anxious, Avoidant, and Disorganized.

 In this episode we welcome back Erin McConaghy and Meaghan Bedrossian to give us an update on the state of foster care. We talk about the HBO Documentary Foster, and the impact of trauma on our youth in the system. We discuss the challenges of placement, how the system can be a barrier at times, what the goal of foster care ultimately is, and why despite it's challenges foster care continues to be massively rewarding for the foster parent (and life changing for the child!).

Foster Care Statistics:

On any given day, there are nearly 443,000 children in foster care in the United States.

In 2017, more than 690,000 children spent time in U.S. foster care.

On average, children remain in state care for nearly two years and six percent of children in foster care have languished there for five or more years.

Despite the common perception that the majority of children in foster care are very young, the average age of kids entering care is 8.

In 2017, one third of children entering U.S. foster care were young people of color.

While most children in foster care live in family settings, a substantial minority — 11 percent — live in institutions or group homes.

In 2017, more than 69,000 children – whose mothers’ and fathers’ parental rights had been legally terminated – were waiting to be adopted.

In 2017, more than 17,000 young people aged out of foster care without permanent families. Research has shown that those who leave care without being linked to forever families have a higher likelihood than youth in the general population to experience homelessness, unemployment and incarceration as adults.

While states should work rapidly to find safe permanent homes for kids, on any given day children available for adoption have spent an average of about one and a half years waiting to be adopted since their parental rights were terminated.

 In this episode we welcome back Kara Radecki to talk about schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is often misunderstood and stigmatized. We talk about what the real life impact to people suffering with this diagnosis looks like, the struggle of day to day life, and the impact to the families supporting a loved one with schizophrenia. We break down myths, misconceptions, what causes this illness in the first place, and treatment options available for anyone affected by this. 

Schizophrenia involves a range of problems with thinking (cognition), behavior or emotions. Signs and symptoms may vary, but usually involve delusions, hallucinations or disorganized speech, and reflect an impaired ability to function. Symptoms may include:

• Delusions. These are false beliefs that are not based in reality. For example, you think that you're being harmed or harassed; certain gestures or comments are directed at you; you have exceptional ability or fame; another person is in love with you; or a major catastrophe is about to occur. Delusions occur in most people with schizophrenia.
• Hallucinations. These usually involve seeing or hearing things that don't exist. Yet for the person with schizophrenia, they have the full force and impact of a normal experience. Hallucinations can be in any of the senses, but hearing voices is the most common hallucination.
• Disorganized thinking (speech). Disorganized thinking is inferred from disorganized speech. Effective communication can be impaired, and answers to questions may be partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include putting together meaningless words that can't be understood, sometimes known as word salad.
• Extremely disorganized or abnormal motor behavior. This may show in a number of ways, from childlike silliness to unpredictable agitation. Behavior isn't focused on a goal, so it's hard to do tasks. Behavior can include resistance to instructions, inappropriate or bizarre posture, a complete lack of response, or useless and excessive movement.
• Negative symptoms. This refers to reduced or lack of ability to function normally. For example, the person may neglect personal hygiene or appear to lack emotion (doesn't make eye contact, doesn't change facial expressions or speaks in a monotone). Also, the person may have lose interest in everyday activities, socially withdraw or lack the ability to experience pleasure.
