Many people equate fitness with exercise and working out in the gym, and struggle to set reasonable goals for themselves to become more fit. Josh Anderson, founder of DIYActive.com, suggests taking more of a lifestyle approach. The more you can think about integrating activity into your day, even in very small bouts of movement, the more likely you are to experience benefits such as more energy, better sleep, and less stress.
If you’re just getting started, simply taking a walk is an underrated but important form of movement. Including strength training through basic body weight exercises builds muscle and helps burn calories. If you’re already used to activity, you might think about changing things up once a month, increasing intensity, time, or resistance, or even trying out something new. Most important, find activities that you enjoy doing so that you will integrate movement into your life.

Have you ever tried to change something, and tried…and tried…and tried? With some change, the go-to approaches of willpower, self-discipline, motivation, and information don’t work. In these cases, you have an immunity to change. You might think there’s something wrong with you, but in fact, a part of you is brilliantly protecting you from what it thinks will happen were you to make that change.
Deborah Helsing, co-author of three books including The Immunity to Change Coach’s Guide, and Right Weight, Right Mind: The ITC Approach to Permanent Weight Loss, joins Julie to discuss the Immunity to Change approach. When you uncover your competing commitments and underlying assumptions and work to shift those, it becomes much easier to create the change you’d like in your life.

It’s a common mental habit to think in this way: “When I have enough money, then I’ll be happy.” “When I’m in the right relationship, I’ll be fulfilled.” “After I’m healed, then things will be okay.” We outsource our well-being any time we are looking outside of ourselves to another person or thing for the answers, or anticipating a future time when our life circumstances will match our expectations.
Speaker, coach, trainer, and author Ami Chen Mills-Naim joins Julie to talk about the 10,000 ways we outsource our well-being, and what it takes to change that mental habit. Finding the ways we can stop the momentum of that thinking and tend to what is required without extraneous thoughts about what will be, we allow ourselves to surrender into our innate well-being.

Are you aware of how many toxins you come into contact with on a daily basis? Most of us are surrounded by them, coming into contact every day with some of the 87,000 chemicals that are allowed in products we commonly use. We take them in through the air we breathe, our food and drink, and our skin. Everything we use in, on, and around our body is potentially a source for health or for illness.
Rheumatologist and environmental health expert Dr. Aly Cohen joins me to explore how these toxins impact our health and what we can do about it. Though it is easy to get overwhelmed at the scope of the issue, taking a very practical and doable approach of making small changes can still have a large impact on the body. Being aware and choosing unprocessed food and drink (in it’s natural unpackaged state), clean air, and safe products for use around your body and home will support your long-term well-being.

Whether you’re changing what you eat because you’d like to lose weight, heal a chronic illness, or avoid getting one in the first place, it’s easy to fall into the “diet” approach, yet the lifestyle approach is more likely to be sustainable and lead to the outcomes you are seeking. Why is this?
Registered Dietitian Jennifer Ventrelle joins me to explore these two very different approaches to the way we eat. One approach typically leads to an unsustainable pattern characterized by “shoulds” and restrictions, and often ends with “falling off the wagon” and feelings of failure. The other can lead to a sustainable approach of daily habits that support your health, impact all areas of your life, and culminate in a sense of pride, accomplishment, and integrity from living your values.

The ancient tradition of meditation is becoming increasingly known, studied, and practiced for a variety of reasons, as it has multiple benefits for all aspects of well-being. Meditation teacher Mary Meckley joins me to talk about the difference between mindfulness and meditation and how to create a meditation ritual to transition to a calm and focused state. Practicing meditation has been shown to improve sleep and anxiety and promote healing, as it helps counter the stress response. People who regularly meditate find that they are more focused and productive, have more self-compassion, and feel more empowered. Many people also report that they feel more connected to everything around them and have more gratitude. Experience a brief meditation that will help you achieve a calm state and increase your sense of well-being, learning to be happy with yourself and your life, as you are now.

Do you consider yourself a leader? What if every action you take ripples out into the world, having impact beyond what you may ever know? Today’s guest Maura Wolf, leadership coach and author of What Matters Most, Everyday Leadership at Home, at Work, and In The World, defines everyday leadership as acting on your deepest values in ordinary ways. By this definition, we all can be leaders.
Everyday leadership requires knowing what matters most to you, being willing to inquire into that question with total honesty. Once you know what matters most, then you act on it, bringing presence in each moment to shift if need be and bringing compassion to your choices and actions. In times of stress—during busy holiday seasons and information glut on all the difficult things happening in the world—connecting with what matters most allows you to more consciously choose how you would like to be and to act.
