Are you hurting your patients?

A very common struggle among many self-employed physicians is the act of charging money. For many of us, CM is not a first career. And for most of us, whatever careers we were in did not involve having to charge for our work. So when you started your practices this was just one more area of uncharted territory that you had to navigate. And with that for just about all of you charging money for your work is met with a lot of stories and emotions.

Rule of thumb: Every decision you make, make sure you like your reason. 

Desperation is a dignity killer. It causes you to make decisions that put a strain on your ethical boundaries and your sense of agency. Over time this can build resentment, bitterness, and burnout. As long as you continue in this mode, you will always feel like you’re on a hamster wheel.

This episode was inspired by a post one of our colleagues made regarding retirement. And the general worries that goes along with that. 

Comments ranged from feelings of fear about not having enough, to working until they die, to “I can’t fucking wait”.  One person even admitted to having a app on her phone counting down the days and hours until she could quit acupuncture and peace out to live her life on the beach.

I have a different take on the idea of retirement.

We stick a needle here, prescribe an herb or two there . We hope that a patient's woes are temporarily abated or perhaps even their life saved-for now. But doctoring is less about preventing the inevitable and more about facilitating the best quality of life.  

Things brings me to the crux. 

We advocate acupuncture, we advocate herbal medicine,  at times we even advocate drugs and surgery. We advocate proper diagnosis and proper Rx for the patient as they present at the moment. This is all appropriate and necessary. I also think it is woefully incomplete and inadequate for the ultimate goal of physicians.

I. Don’t. Know.
  
"I don't know" is a powerful avoidance tactic.
 When you claim ignorance then there are no expectations or accountability expected of you. "I don’t know” is a very powerful shield from the scariness of the unknown.
It acts like a warm blanket that gives you the validation to stay where you are. 
It’s a limiting belief that keeps you stuck and prevents you from ever getting started.

Do you say things like:

• “I wish I could just treat patients and not run a business.”
• “I love what I do, but I hate running a business.”
• “I wish someone else could just do my marketing for me.”

These are the thoughts of many people in this field, including myself for many years.
I wanted a great practice, but I hated what needed to be done in order to have one. It was like there was this awesome and super fun thing that I was passionate about at my fingertips - being a doctor, but there was this pesky obstacle that was in my way keeping me from doing it and that was running the business.

Most of us set goals, whether long-term or short. Sometimes they are simply  personal achievement goals, like completing a marathon. Most of the time we set goals to attain something that we think will bring us happiness. Thinking along the lines of “If I just achieve this then my life will be better.” And most of the time we reach those goals and it does provide some temporary satisfaction, but eventually we are back to where we started, searching for satisfaction again. All that work to get to a place only to still feel a void. So we set a new goal to achieve that happiness. And so on…
