Many managers struggle with discussing mistakes with their team members. Some employees shut down (or even cry) when their mistake is brought up. Others grow defensive or combative. In either case, the manager is left frustrated, and the root cause of the mistake goes unaddressed, leaving the door open for the mistake to happen again.
In this episode of Better Workdays, we look at some of the common errors in thinking and communicating that many of us naturally make when discussing mistakes. Borrowing from the great book “Managing Difficult Conversations,” we’ll look at how a shit from certainty to curiosity and a focus on understanding over blame can help these conversations move smoothly toward a solution.
