You Search the Scriptures
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.” - John 5:39.
Have you ever stopped to think that someone can read the Bible every day and still not truly know Jesus? That’s exactly what happened with the religious leaders in Jesus’ time. They were experts in the Law, they studied the Scriptures intensely, memorized passages, taught others with authority… but when the very Messiah — the one the Scriptures were pointing to — stood right in front of them, they didn’t recognize Him.
They believed that eternal life was found in having knowledge of the Scriptures. But Jesus challenged that idea. He said, “You search the Scriptures, thinking that in them you have eternal life, but they testify about Me.” Jesus wasn’t condemning their study — He was correcting their focus. They were holding tightly to the words, but missing the Person those words were revealing. They approached the Bible with their minds, but not with open hearts.
The Bible is not just an old book, a set of rules, or a collection of religious stories. It’s a living letter of love — written by God to reveal His Son to you. It’s food for the hungry soul, comfort for the weary, guidance for those in the dark. God’s Word is like a healing leaf from the tree of life, meant to restore the broken and strengthen the weak.
What Jesus wants from you isn’t just Bible reading out of habit. He wants you to come to the Word with faith, sincerity, and a desire to meet Him personally. When Jesus said, “search the Scriptures,” He meant more than just reading. He meant digging deep, investigating, seeking as if you’re looking for treasure — because what you’ll find is far more valuable than anything else: you’ll find Him.
So let me ask you this: when you open your Bible, what are you looking for? A quick answer? A comforting verse? Or are you seeking to really know Jesus?
Today, take a moment and pray, “Lord, I want to see You in the Scriptures. Speak to me.” Read slowly. Reflect deeply. Read with faith. Because when you truly seek Jesus with your whole heart, you will find Him.
As the prophet Jeremiah said, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” And Jesus Himself said, “This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
God’s Word is more than ink on a page — it’s the living voice of the Savior. Let it light your path today. Let it show you who you are. And above all, let it lead you straight to the heart of Jesus.
Let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, sometimes I come to Your Word out of habit and forget the treasure I’m holding. But today, I want to hear Your voice. I want to see You in the Scriptures. Open my eyes, my heart, and my mind. Help me not to settle for knowledge alone, but to really know You. Speak to me. Guide me. Change me. In Your name, Amen.
