It’s time to enter the colosseum and for us to seek our revenge in this life or the next! This week, we’re talking about an absolute banger of a film and one of the best of the aughts… Ridley Scott’s epic sword and sandal action film “Gladiator” starring Russel Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, Connie Nielsen, Dijon Honshu, and more. We’ve gotta keep it real here. This movie has no right to go as hard as it does. With a troubled production that included the death of a major character, a constantly changing script and plot, tensions between the cast, a leading man with very little star power at the time, a director who had fallen out of favour with the public, and lots and lots of drinking… it’s TRULY insane that this film came together the way that it did and that it even won multiple Oscars. But it did. It rules. It’s awesome. Let’s get into it.

We start off the episode by talking first about our love for Ridley Scott. Scott is one of the most consistent filmmakers working and boy, oh boy… he’s got some classics. Even his mid-level movies are entertaining and well-made. To kick things off, we go through his filmography and touch on some of our favourites including “Alien”, “Blade Runner”, “American Gangster”, “The Martian”, “Black Hawk Down”, “Kingdom Of Heaven”, “The Last Duel”, and more. After that, it’s time to talk about Maximus, Commodus, Proximo, and the rest of the “Gladiator” crew.

What can we say about this movie… the action is riveting, the story is simple but effective, the dialogue fires you up, and both Joaquin and Russel deliver dynamite performances. They are excellent rivals and portray moral counterpoints that you can’t help but cheer for and root against. We break down the plot of the film, talk about what we love, talk about what really works, and revisit some of the craziest rumours and stories from the film’s production. We also chat about the historical inaccuracies in this film regarding the gladiators and story, discover which characters really existed and which were made up, talk about the Air Aurelius 3’s, and more nerdy history stuff.

After this, we pivot to a more serious discussion about the recent Kanye West (known now as Ye) interview with Alex Jones and about our decisions to boycott/no longer support Ye in any way. Not anymore. That kinda stuff doesn’t fly in the birdhouse and we cannot stay silent. He has crossed far too many lines in the past few years and enough is enough. We urge other platforms and people to make a hard statement against his harmful rhetoric and open racism, Nazism, and denial of one of the worst modern genocides. It’s over. He’s done. Stop making excuses for him. Stand on your principles as Maximus did. See ya never, Nazi scumbag.

This week we’re joined by our homie Sideshow Trice to talk about one of the most consistent and personally influential rappers to come out of Canada and someone who definitely deserves all the flowers that we give them all throughout this episode… Nova Scotian rapper and producer “Classified”! If you’re not from Canada, you may not have heard of him but he’s been putting out music since 1995, consistently delivering good rhymes and insane production, and has been putting on for Canada in a huge way. A respected but somewhat slept-on rapper’s rapper who loves the craft and cares about artistry? Sounds like another episode of BP, right? But this one means a little more to all of us as we unpack the history, influence, and impact “Classified” made on all of us. It’s actually kind of touching… and a lot of fun.

We break down his career share some of our favourite songs and albums, discuss why we drifted away from his music, and share how amazing it has been to reconnect with his discography and explore his legacy as a Canadian hip-hop icon. We marvel at his crazy list of features which includes pretty much every dope rapper from Canada and some heavy hitters from across North America including Raekwon, Snoop, DJ Premier, Royce Da 5’9, and more. We also gush and reminisce on our younger years when his albums like “Boy-Cost-In The Industry”, “Hitch Hiking’ Music”, and “Self Explanatory” meant so much to us and were played on repeat. We also praise his consistently dope production, break down his fresh and interesting songwriting, share our thoughts on his recent releases, and appreciate his style, voice, and realness. This dude has been putting in that work and deserves some respect on his name, so if you haven’t given him a listen... you really ought to.

What’s good, homies? This week we’re diving into Wes Anderson’s fun, visually striking, and wholesome animated comedy film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, and more. Written by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, this stop-motion adaptation of a story by Roald Dahl goes incredibly hard, looks amazing, and is so much fun to watch. What the cuss are you waiting for? In this episode, we share what we love about this movie, break down the film’s plot, explore Wes Anderson’s visual style and how it translates to stop-motion, express our admiration for the cast's vocal performances and our favourite characters, unpack the film’s critical success and strange commercial failure, and praise the sound design and soundtrack. We also praise some of the hilarious physical and sight gags in the film, the emotional undercurrents of the film, the sharp dialogue, and the film’s near-perfect runtime. We’re back this week with another Lazy Bird episode to catch you up on all the things that we’ve been watching, playing, and listening to! Ayo! This week we’re diving into the world of Supermassive Games and their unique brand of “interactive drama horror” video games! More specifically, we’re talking about the critically acclaimed “Until Dawn” for PS4 and, to a lesser extent, the recently released spiritual sequel “The Quarry” for the PS5 along with “The Dark Pictures Anthology” games. These games blend mystery, horror, and the supernatural with a reverence for horror cinema and lore. They all feature fantastic performances, a spooky atmosphere, real scares, deep lore, and an immersive gaming experience. They rule.

“Until Dawn” was released in 2015 and features a slew of famous faces that populate the motion capture cast including Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Peter Stormare. It focuses on a group of playable characters who are all returning to a mountain lodge one year after a terrible accident. Of course, things aren’t what they seem and the group is thrust into a story of horror, betrayal, and survival. Your choices will decide who lives, who dies, and what secrets are revealed over one frightful night. There’s a freaky guy with a flamethrower, a serial killer, and some cannibalistic forest monsters… along with interpersonal drama, a nighttime snowstorm, some abandoned mines, a labyrinthine basement, an old sanatorium, and more. It’s a must-play for horror lovers. 

In this episode, we discuss the game, our experience playing it, the lore, the world-building, the main storyline and performances, and a bunch more good stuff. Spoilers ahead. We also highlight a bunch of awesome features in “Until Dawn” including the lack of manual saving, immersive quick-time events, eerie atmosphere, and a system they call the “Butterfly Effect” that uses the Decimal system’s A.I. and your choices to change the plot of the game as you play. Each play-through, though linear, can and will be different depending on the choices you make. There are MANY different endings and certain sequences that are only available in certain circumstances. Even the music is based on your story and is changed to meet your situation depending on previous events, your relationships, and what you know. “Until Dawn” spawned a number of games by Supermassive Games including the "Dark Pictures Anthology" that follow in the same vein and play style but feature other ghoulish delights including witches (yes, they are in the witch zone), ghosts, devilish abominations, cults, and more. 

This game really makes you feel like you are in a movie… so much so that Otis and PALMREADER accidentally keep calling this game a movie. This leads to a conversation about the future of movies, gaming, and where they intersect. In the end, we have no idea what is coming but we do know that “Until Dawn” is really dope and fun to play. We hope this genre is developed even more in the future and can't wait to see where they take it.

We’re back with round two of our SPOOKY SZN selections and this week we’re talking about a bonafide freak of a film, 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project”. This one is an all-timer that has become a major part of horror culture. For good reason, too. It is the movie that reinvigorated the “found footage” craze in American horror and is quite possibly the best example of that genre of film. It is also one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time and is superbly made. It’s all desperation, high tension, and atmosphere... but it just freaking works. Join us this week as we unpack all things Blair Witch.

What can we say about this awesome flick? Well, it’s dope… but it has also aged really well and become a cult classic horror film. This movie leans so heavily on atmosphere, lore, and human-driven realism that it leaves the audience feeling uneasy and tense throughout. "The Blair Witch Project" purposely approaches horror with a documentary eye that unravels as the film progresses. Eventually, what you don’t see on screen is swimming in the back of your head. The witch is an ever-present fear made even more mystifying by the fact that we never actually see it on screen.

On top of that, this movie was mostly improvised by the cast and the production was very compartmentalized. The fear, frustration, and tension the characters feel are real and that translates superbly on screen. Plus, the mystery surrounding the marketing and release of this movie is one of the biggest hoodwinks ever pulled on an audience and it had people believing the story was actually real. The actors pretended to be dead for a year after the film's release. Yeah.

In this episode, we break down the plot of the movie, share our thoughts on its legacy, discuss the film’s production and amazing marketing, muse on what “The Blair Witch” was doing that was ahead of its time, map out the classic witch zones, share our lasting fear of stick figure effigies, try to figure out what was in the bloody shirt bag, and ruminate on the found footage genre over the past twenty plus years. We also talk briefly about the sequels and franchise-related media but most of it is pretty “meh”. With that being said, this is a modern classic and you SHOULD watch it. Otis then shares his experiences at an AEW wrestling event this past weekend and PALMREADER shares some not-so-exciting logistical news about the pod.

We’re back with the first offering of this year’s SPOOKY SZN series! This week, we’re talking about Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s 2004 horror comedy “Shaun Of The Dead”! The first film of the “Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy, “Shaun Of The Dead” is a prime example of transnational comedy, great satire, incredible writing and direction, outstanding visual comedy and editing, and was not only critically and commercially successful but is considered a cult classic and one of the best zombie films ever. With a perfect runtime, great pacing, surprisingly touching moments, and some big laughs… this one is very rewatchable, has aged (relatively well), and is so much fun.

We break down the plot of the film, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s careers, what we love about “Shaun Of The Dead” and the following “Cornetto” films, unpack some of the amazing visual comedy and editing, and talk about the rise and fall of zombie movies in general. We also share some of our favourite zombie films including “28 Days Later”, “Train To Busan”, and Zack Snyder’s “Dawn Of The Dead”, gush about the wave of zombie films in the early aughts before the genre ran itself kind of dry, lament the Hollywood remake of foreign films in the era of subtitles, and discuss how “Shaun Of The Dead” bridged British and American comedy in the perfect way.

Following our discussion about “Shaun Of The Dead”, we get into a long conversation about Andrew Dominik’s new film “Blonde” and the film’s response, entitlement in consumer culture, and the recent rise of an unwillingness to have respectful discourse in society. We question why anyone would spend so much time crusading online against something that they dislike, what happened to respectfully agreeing to disagree, and why someone would “review bomb” a film. This leads to a conversation about the dangers of giving the consumer too much power, how this attitude hurts independent non-franchise and experimental filmmaking, the pratfalls of ignoring the hard topics in art and culture, historical erasure, and where this road ultimately leads.

And finally, we chat about the new monstrous addition to the MCU in Michael Giacchino’s “Werewolf By Night”, the Marvel Monsters, and PALMREADER smacks his knee and bleeds all over himself. Wouldn’t be a horror pod without some gore.

Welcome to another episode of BIRD PROTOCOL! Today is the release of the long-awaited album “$oul $old $eparately” from Gary, Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs. So, naturally, we felt that today is the perfect time to sit down and talk about one of our favourite artists and one of the most talented and consistent rappers working today. With an incredible career that spans from 2006 to his breathtaking run of albums starting in 2014 and leading up to today’s release, Gangsta Gibbs has been steadily rising and constantly praised for his flow, lyricism, and ability to collaborate and innovate. He’s a perfect bridge between the old school and new, working with legendary producers like Madlib and The Alchemist while also connecting with modern stars like Kenny Beats. Gibbs has never been afraid to explore and experiment with various sounds, work with talented and unexpected artists, and each album is crafted around a purposeful vision. It’s some seriously good stuff.

We start off this week talking about “$$$” and giving our first impressions of the album. To nobody’s surprise, it’s really good. We share some of our favourite tracks, a few places where we feel that there were some missteps, and chat about what makes this album a unique summation of all that came before it. Then we get into his career and his many incredible albums including Grammy-nominated “Alfredo”, “Bandana”, “Piñata”, “Freddie”, “Fetti”, “Baby Face Killa”, “Shadow Of A Doubt”, “You Only Live 2wice”, and more. We talk further about what makes Gibbs an elite collaborator, his constant elevation and respect for the art of rap, his crazy features, catching lighting in a bottle twice, his ability to find new pockets and flows, and his deliberate creative direction and album construction. All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in podcasting! A day in podcasting is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck is a fortune! Every formation is a parade! I love to pod! Especially about movies like this one! That’s right, we’re back with a brand new episode of BIRD PROTOCOL and much like all of our other “returning-after-a-break” episodes, this pod is a bit messy. We faced some alien threats of our own - Otis’ had some microphone trouble, our recording program kept giving us grief, and we were dealing with some general exhaustion - but we pressed on! It was one of "those weeks" but we really tried to keep it light and have some fun. As Hicks says, “I like to keep this handy... for close encounters.” and I like to think he was talking about positivity.

This week, we’re talking about the cinematic touchstone and PALMREADER’s (belated) birthday pick - James Cameron’s 1986 classic action sci-fi flick “Aliens”. We cannot stress just how freaking awesome and influential this movie is. Decades later and it still rips. With an awesome storyline that expands upon the ideas presented in the original film, a great cast, smart writing, amazing set pieces, thrilling action sequences, lasting cultural iconography and influence, Sigourney Weaver being an absolute boss, aliens getting blasted to bits, a morally ambiguous android, Bill Paxton (the only guy to be murdered by a Predator, a Xenomorph, and the Terminator) screaming “Game over, man! Game over!”, and two queen mothers throwing space hands over their babies… this might be one of the best sequels ever. Plus, it’s got quite the history! With its troubled production, inexperienced (at the time) director, and ambitions that were greater than its budget, “Aliens” could have easily been a catastrophe. It wasn’t, though. In fact, it was pretty much the complete opposite. Everything about it is great. Critically acclaimed, culturally loved, and so much fun… “Aliens” set the bar for space action and influenced a whole generation of movies, video games, comics, and TV shows. Hell... Sigourney Weaver even got a best actress nomination at the Academy Awards that year.

So, join us as we explore what makes this film great… not only as an amazing sequel but also as an individual film. We share what we love about it, some small gripes we have, and talk about the legacy and impact of the film. We chat about the cast, unpack some of the critical responses, and do our usual thing. Plus, some truly awful takes from Siskel and Ebert, Otis mixes up Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise, questions on “alien littering”, and the longest and most brain-fogged wholesome goodbye ever. So, stop your grinin’ and drop your linens. We’re about to take off and nuke the whole site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
