What’s good. homies? This week we’re kicking it and finally chatting about one of the biggest and probably the most “Canadian” of Canadian bands, The Tragically Hip. Haven’t heard of them? Well, you’re probably not from here. Almost every Canadian has heard of them if they haven’t heard their music. Have no fear, though! The Bird Boys are here to give you the 411 about one of the best bands our great nation has to offer. PALMREADER also managed to not tear up, which is good.

The Tragically Hip is a pillar of Canadian rock that formed in 1984 in Kingston, Ontario. They became one of the most beloved musical acts in the Canadian music scene with 13 studio albums, one live album, one EP, and over 50 singles over a 33-year career plus an extra EP of recovered songs in 2021. This band was a constant in Canadian music from the late ’80s until their amicable break-up and the death of their frontman Gord Downie in 2017. Plus, this band is a real rock band. It was the same five guys just ripping it for over three decades. Incredible. Nine of their albums have reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts and the band has won 17 Junos, been inducted into the Order of Canada, put on our Walk Of Fame, and they continue to be the soundtrack to summer nights in the garage, on the porch, or sitting on the dock by the lake.

To say they are important to Canada is an understatement. This band shut down the country for an emotional summer night in August 2016 as they played their last live-streamed show from their hometown… attended by our Prime Minister… streamed uninterrupted on our national television channel… to over 11 million people. Yeah.

So, this episode is mostly us recounting how crazy that was, sharing our connection to and love of The Hip, reminiscing on some of our favourite songs, talking about how beloved the band is and the surprising number of people who really love this band, and a lively discussion on what makes them so Canadian (aside from being, well, Canadian). This leads to a discussion of what it means to be a Canadian artist and why we feel The Hip shows Canadian patriotism so well. We also praise Gord Downie’s lyrical content and writing style, their overall musicianship, the consistency of their music and releases, their growth as a band, their willingness to talk about the darker side of humanity and our country, the way they tackle the historic mistreatment of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, and a whole lot more.

Then we talk about the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” trailer, the recent Marvel announcements, “Stray” on PS5, PALMREADER reiterates that this season of “Westward” slaps, Otis doesn’t understand “Black Adam”, Nathan Fielder’s return to TV with “The Rehearsal”, and other ramblings.

Ayo! We went to the cottage last week and had a blast. The unfortunate thing about the cottage though is that it made us so maximum chilled that we couldn’t bring ourselves to record our scheduled episode on “The Hip”. Plus, Otis’ brain was discombobulated from our return to society so… we decided to do another lazy bird episode! Kick off your shoes and take a trip into our lake-water-soaked minds. Join us for another rousing talk about nothing in particular.

We kick things off by recapping our trip to the cottage and complaining about how hot it is, discussing the healing values of lake water and hangovers not being the same up north, and Otis laments not planning his time off properly so that he could have a buffer day between the cottage and going back to work. Then we talk about a cinematic experience that we shared up north that is unlike any other, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 experimental comedy horror film “House”. It is an avalanche of psychedelic slapstick nonsense in the best of ways and you really have to see it. It has Kung Fu and a dancing skeleton! Like… C’mon!

This leads to us talking about how conflicted we felt about Raimi’s new Dr. Strange film (a movie with very little Dr. Strange or multiverse but a lot of madness) and we discuss what we liked and didn’t like about the “Multiverse Of Madness”. Otis then endorses “Everything Everywhere All At Once” as one of the best movies he’s seen this year and PALMREADER shares his overall happiness with and excitement about the new season of “Westworld”. Then we discuss “The Boys” Season 3 and the finale being somewhat anti-climactic when compared to the other high points of the season. We still love the show though and chat about the sharp writing, the visual gags and humour, the moral ambiguity of the characters, and how good Anthony Starr is at playing a villain as Homelander.

Then we talk about commercials being dumb, late-night dating phone services, being a teen doing dumb stuff in the mall and getting kicked out, becoming an investment advisor when you watch “Shark Tank”, and watching Otis’ partner freak out over “Dr. Pimple Popper”. We also recount our second successful meal together at El Pueblito in Bracebridge, Ontario, and how crazy good their food is. Then the boys talk about what they’ve been playing and listening to: the PS5 version of “Ghost Of Tsushima”, the return to “Battlefield V” and horrible teammates from the Bozo Bazaar, “Stellaris”, Sonic the Hedgehog’s real name, “Mario Kart” and “Smash Brothers” on Nintendo Switch keeping the old school split-screen multiplayer vibes alive, friendship ruining video games and board games, the new album from our homie Whensday called “Thank God For Me”, Lloyd Banks’ “The Course Of The Inevitable 2”, “Jai Paul”, Spiritbox’s “Eternal Blue”, and Otis has discovered “Dillinger Four”.

We’re shipping up to Boston and diving deep into what is possibly our favourite Martin Scorsese film! Leo, Mark, Matt, Jack, Alec, Martin… the gang is all here and they’re going super dumb hard in Scorsese’s adaptation of “Infernal Affairs” that finally won him a Best Director Oscar, Best Picture, and features probably the greatest needle drop in all of his films. And it’s from “The Dropkick Murphys”? Huh? That’s right! This is our “The Departed” pod!

This movie is a summation of Scorsese’s powers and his banger from the aughts (cause he’s had one every decade) that moves at a breakneck speed, is insanely rewatchable, and also endlessly quotable. It’s a violent romp through the streets of Boston that features knock-out performances from its stacked cast, Jack Nicholson holding a dildo in a porn theatre, Vera Farmiga being a horrible therapist, and a whole lot of moral ambiguity. Jack Nicholson goes off the rails as a psychopathic FBI informant gang leader Frank Costello, Matt Damon plays a (possibly closeted) scheming piece of trash double agent cop, Leonardo DiCaprio shows us why he’s the man and fights off a mental breakdown for two and a half hours as an undercover cop, and Mark Whalberg delivers what is possibly his best performance ever. Honestly, we could watch Alec Baldwin and Mark Whalberg bust each other’s chops all day. “How’s your mother?”

This week you’ll hear a lot of poorly done Boston accents, a couple of swears, Otis trying not to go full Whalberg mode, and some laughs between us as we unpack why we love this movie. We break down the complicated plot that doesn’t seem so complicated when you actually watch the movie, talk about what makes this movie great, and chat about what makes it different from other Scorsese flicks. “The Departed” is Scorsese’s attempt at a blockbuster that plays like a highlight reel of his career. Is it perfect? In the words of Dignam, “Maybe. Maybe Not. Maybe f**k yourself!” Everybody in this film is firing on all cylinders from the jump and it really pays off as the narrative flows from twist to turn. Plus, what an ending! We revisit some of the iconic scenes, share some of our favourite lines, chat about the cast, and really gush about how great this movie is.

We also talk about a theory Otis and others have that Matt Damon’s character is a closeted homosexual, Scorsese letting Marky Mark just go ballistic, the blatant homophobia, the film’s themes of toxic masculinity, Boston being problematic, Jack Nicholson going full Satan mode, Whitey Bulger and The Winter Hill Gang, and more. It’s a fun podcast about one of our favourite movies. Strap in.

What’s good, homies?! We’re joined this week by special guest Dan McLeod, writer and director of “Regicide”, to talk about indie filmmaking and his upcoming film. As with our conversation with Brian on “Snow Blinded”, we discuss lots of behind-the-scenes and production stuff (Otis worked on set as a script supervisor), but this week’s conversation is much different. We chat about Dan’s influences, the process of making “Regicide”, sticking to a plan and budget, independent filmmaking, action choreography, maximizing creativity within the constraints of smaller film production, and more. Later on, Otis and Dan share their favourite moments from shooting, everyone muses on the anxiety and stress that comes with creating something, we discuss “imposter syndrome”, and we all rant about the current state of art creation, consumption, marketing, and the problems with “the algorithm”.

This leads to a conversation around the problem with “internet fame”, buying plays and playlist placements, fake support from people and people only caring about what’s “hot”, artists being fleeced by a system that’s built on exploiting art, “Vanity Galleries”, the problem with film festivals, and more. We also chat about the problems that social media and the industry have caused for artists, people just stealing ideas and biting flows to get seen, labels exploiting artists, pay-to-play within streaming film and music, and more. PALMREADER also shares his theory about Netflix being in bed with certain VPN companies and how that signaled the beginning of the downfall for the streaming giant.

We’re closing out our series on Japanese cinema by talking about a film we never thought we’d talk about on this podcast because of our differing opinions on it - the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi action flick “The Matrix”! Now, you might be wondering why we would talk about a movie that we don’t really agree on and one that has already been talked about to death? Well, it's because of the influence of Japanese cinema! More specifically, Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 anime film “Ghost In The Shell", which was a major influence on the creation and plot of “The Matrix”. Hell, we’ll take it a step further… “The Matrix” wouldn’t exist without “Ghost In The Shell”. Don’t believe us? You will after this episode. It’s unavoidable like the bullet Trinity puts in the agent on the rooftop. Dodge this.

When “The Matrix” was being pitched to the studio, the Wachowskis showed Oshii’s film to the studios and said, “We want to make this in real life”. They even lifted whole sequences and ideas from “Ghost In The Shell” and threw them into their own film. The falling green code and title card? Yep. The plugs in the back of the neck? Yep. The existential philosophy? Yep. The Wachowskis went even further and incorporated various other generic conventions, philosophies, countercultural ideals, conspiracies, literature, and more. To Otis, “The Matrix” is bogged down by how much they tried to incorporate into the movie, the vagueness and lack of depth in the film’s themes, and the franchise’s very rough expansion. PALMREADER, on the other hand, argues that while everything that comes after the original film doesn’t do the franchise any favours, “The Matrix” is a fun movie, that we shouldn’t take it so seriously, and that we have to look at the context of the film when discussing it. One thing they agree on? “The Matrix” owes a lot to Japanese cinema, the Wachowskis are great “idea people”, and other filmmakers needed to stop using the green “Matrix” tint on everything.

In this episode, the boys break down both films, the legacy and influence of “The Matrix”, how the Wachowskis' film is a direct bridge between Japanese cinema and Hollywood, what works in “The Matrix” and where it all starts to fall apart. We agree that it is an amazing example of post-modern filmmaking but ask does it do too much… or maybe too little? Are all the good parts of this movie taken from something else? Is it a smart movie for dumb people or can we look past that? Of course, the boys praise the technicality of the film and give flowers where they are due… but has the film’s legacy, impact, and lore become too much of a hindrance to it? Plus, we deep dive into what exactly the Wachowskis took from “Ghost In The Shell”, discuss how “The Matrix” gets better when you read it as a live-action anime, explore the vagueness in the film that Otis dislikes so much, read some critical responses to “The Matrix” that summarize some of our thoughts on the film perfectly, and shower praise on “Ghost In The Shell” as the masterpiece it is.

This week we’re deviating from the norm and chatting with Brian Lockyer! He’s the director and writer of the upcoming cerebral body horror/thriller film “Snow Blinded” ahead of the film’s premiere next Thursday at the Apollo Cinema. Both Brian and Otis have been working on this batshit crazy film for three years and it is finally going to be shown on the big screen! If you are new to the podcast or just haven’t been following along, Otis also composed the original score for the film and worked on set, so this gave us a chance to talk about all aspects of “Snow Blinded” and really get into the production of the film.

In this episode we chat about indie film production, Brian and Otis share what they’ve learned working on the film and stories from the set, talk about scoring and composing music for the film, muse on the benefits of working with the right people, and discuss the importance of shared creative vision. We’re back with part three of our Japanese Cinema series and this week we’re talking about a film that is the antithesis of everything we covered last week when we got into Studio Ghibli and “Kiki’s Delivery Service”. We’re going freak mode with the totally bonkers, perverted, and hyper-violent yakuza action film “Ichi The Killer” from acclaimed director Takashi Miike. This movie is NOT for everyone and we should state right here, right now, that we describe and discuss some very violent scenes and adult themes including sexual assault, BDSM, mental abuse, and more. TRIGGER WARNING.

“Ichi The Killer” is a cult classic film that is filled with stomach-churning scenes of hyper-violence and perverted insanity. Seriously… this film starts out weird and continually gets worse. It is relentless and wild and weird and kinda funny but also very upsetting? Miike plays on the tension between surrealist dark humour, hyper-stylized and experimental film-making, abrasive gore, and themes of sex/fetishism in a way that makes some sort of sick sense. It’s DEFINITELY NOT a film to watch with your mom and pop.

We break down the film’s sadistic fever-dream narrative, unpack some of the insanely violent scenes and surrealist moments, and muse on how every character is essentially evil or broken. We talk about the film’s reception, the controversies, the stuff that works and the stuff that doesn’t hold up at all, the subversive subtext to the film, the editing/pacing and how it guides your experience with this film, and the way the main characters function as a metaphor for BDSM. We also talk about the strange choices Miike makes when it comes to CGI vs. practical effects and the wild, weird world of “Ichi The Killer”. This leads us into a discussion on violence and the influence of the Japanese perspective on sex and violence in Western media. Plus, we chat about Takashi Miike - his career, his diverse filmography, and his influence.

Again, this movie is NOT FOR EVERYONE and this episode deals with mature themes and violence. This movie is considered a masterpiece and beloved by many but is a tough watch. Lots to talk about. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya.

We’re are back with part two of BIRD PROTOCOL’s celebration of Japanese cinema with a really wholesome and thoroughly enjoyable film about a witch, growing up, and the gig economy. So, grab your broom, give the cat some pancakes, and let’s fly off on another delivery with “Kiki’s Delivery Service”!

“Kiki’s Delivery Service” tells a sweet coming of age tale about a young witch striking out on her own in a city by the sea with her talking cat Jiji, an insanely kind baker, a kid who is horny for flight, a couple of grandmothers, a maximum chiller dog, and a painter who talks to birds. That sounds wild but trust us… it is so wholesome. This movie is mesmerizing, whimsical, heartfelt and so, so fun. Of course, we couldn’t talk about this movie without having a conversation about its writer and director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki spearheaded multiple critically and culturally adored films from 1979 to the present day and his style is without a doubt one of the most unique and individual in the pantheon of cinematic Japanese animation.

We start off with a gush about Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and then go right into 1989's “Kiki’s Delivery Service”. We discuss the film's story, the amazing artwork and animation style, the film’s themes, and the overwhelming joy we feel watching this movie. We break down what makes this film (and many of the other Ghibli films) so wonderful and what gives them such longevity. This movie is a treat for the eyes that has some real emotional depth to it without ever being overly preachy or leaning too hard on any generic conventions. Plus, some good old ranting about delivery drivers, "the grindset", cyclists, the upcoming Ontario elections, the gig economy, and more semi-related nonsense.

This leads to a larger conversation on anime as a whole because anime has quietly become one of the bigger influences on North American culture and the works of Miyazaki brought the discourse on anime to a higher level both academically and critically. So, we take some time to talk about some other notable anime films, television shows like “Dragon Ball”, the history of anime, and its place in popular culture today. This was an awesome film to rewatch and we recommend you check it out along with all the other amazing Ghibli films if you’re looking to dip back into the work of Japanese animation.

We close out with a gush about the return of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Kendrick Lamar and his excellent new album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”. To nobody's surprise... It’s a masterpiece.

Ayo! We’re kicking off our month-long celebration of Japanese cinema with Akira Kurosawa’s 1957 stellar jidaigeki film, “Throne Of Blood”. That’s right, this week we’re taking it all the way back to feudal Japan and the age of the samurai. It was really great to revisit this adaptation of a Shakespearean classic as seen through the eyes of a talented, important, and influential filmmaker and a topic we both loved while we were at university together. We can't stress enough how much this movie rules. It's skillfully crafted, atmospheric, kinetic, poetic, and exciting. It also has everything you might want or need from a film… evil forest ghosts, prophecy, murder, swordplay, and lots of madness. We got to really go deep in this episode because we love samurai films, Japanese cinema, and Kurosawa. What a great way to kick off this series.

We start off by introducing “Throne Of Blood” and break down the plot. From there we dive right into the DNA of Japanese cinema, Kurosawa’s filmmaking style and influence, the plethora of other “Macbeth” films, why this is such an amazing adaptation and works so damn well, Lady Macbeth being a horrible person, Toshiro Mifune, the historical accuracy in the film, and a whole lot more. Plus, we break down our favourite scenes, marvel at the film’s practical special effects, and explore the film's cinematography, use of landscape, lighting, and Kurosawa’s emotional cues.

We close out with a little rambling about what’s going on in our lives. Otis realizes that Will and Jada are the modern-day Macbeth family, talks about watching “Basket Case”, and chats about his recent video game purchase, “Trek To Yomi”. PALMREADER talks about “Moon Knight”, shouts out Jack Harlow, explains why he wouldn’t be able to be a part of the “Ghost Adventures” crew, and shares his experience thus far with the new season of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race”. What’s good, homies?! We’re taking a break this week before we jump into our “Japanese Cinema Month” and kicking it lazy bird style. Join us as we ramble and rant about a myriad of topics and let you into our world.

We start things off this week by announcing our triumphant return to heavy music! We’re making an EP of old songs we wrote as Seance Choir all those years ago. Why? Because they rip, obviously. In all seriousness, we really felt that they needed to be out in the world and since we’ve improved as producers/musicians… we feel that we can finally do them justice. Does this mean that we’ll play shows again? Will there be more music after the EP? We can’t promise anything but the songs will be heavy. This conversation leads to us being happy about where we’re at creatively, discussions of all the various things we’ve got going on, and Otis’ movie premieres.

We also revisit a few things that we missed in the “Cyberpunk 2077” episode, muse on Tony Hawk being a sick dude, talk about Nick and Vanessa Lachey’s “The Ultimatum” being the craziest and most toxic show PALMREADER has ever seen, “Survivor” having 42 seasons, and "Reality TV” in general. Somehow this leads to a conversation about the grim future of “Reality TV”, Steve Austin delivering stone-cold stunners in “The Condemned”, pooping for attention, British vs. American “Reality TV”, and Dr. Phil.

We then talk about wanting to see “The Northman” and Robert Eggers being sick, the mall, and people losing all common courtesy and driving/walking skills during the pandemic. Plus, we discuss new music from Kendrick Lamar that is coming, Action Bronson dropping “Cocodrillo Turbo”, Future’s new album “I NEVER LIKED YOU” and its amazing cover, Rolling Loud coming to Toronto, the inflation of band merch and the Kanye effect, Freddie Gibbs killing it on all fronts, and some new games we want to play.

Next week, we start our journey through the land of the rising sun with Kurosawa’s “Throne Of Blood”.
