Third times a charm, y'all. We're back at the Sundance Film Festival, virtually of course, and we're starting it off with a local story directed by San Franciscan Debbie Lum.  Her film, Try Harder!  focus's on a handful of Lowell High School - a public school that kids have to test into - and their (and sometimes parents) obsession with getting into Ivy League colleges.  The film made us think about our high school experiences and appreciate that our parents didn't pressure us about getting into college. Like, not at all.

So let's get into our first of many Sundance 2021 interviews and find Try Harder! once it gets its official release date.

Erin and Ange sit down with Erika Cohn, director of the documentary Belly of the Beast, a film that follows the fight against the illegal sterilization of women in prison. While this documentary has been 10 years in the making, it all started when she became a volunteer at the Oakland based organization Justice Now, which fights to provide social justice for women in prison. We get into the back stories of film's main subjects, Kelli Dillon, and Cynthia Chandler, and the dark history of eugenics in California. This is a powerful documentary that further proves our need for MAJOR transparency in our prisons, and to rethink the money spent on a system that is completely inept. And while we're at it, when the hell will the decisions made about a woman's body be her own? The fight is not over, reparations have not been made, and the people at the helm of these atrocities (that are still happening to this day) have not yet been held accountable. Support this film, get fired up, and go to bellyofthebeast.com to get involved!

We're baaaaaaaaaack. So much to talk about and not enough time...

Why does it feel like we've already lived a full year and it's only mid-January?  Maybe Dr. Fauci can answer that? Anyway, we've got your first Basic Bitch ready for your 2021 ears and man, do we get IN TO IT.  We watched the fuck outta the inauguration and have a lot of thoughts about the day and festivities. We're trying to figure out how to get our elderly family members the Covid vaccine, figured out that Ange requested the song Too Close by NEXT way too much, and what's it like to try to buy a home in the Bay Area.

We've got a lot to say, so let's go! Thanks for listening!

Hello Bitch Talkers and welcome to our first official recording of 2021. We're not wasting any time and catching up with our friend of the show, Sophia Andary, who's running for a delegate spot in Assembly District 19.

We met Sophia in 2018 when she came on the podcast to talk abut her role in San Francisco Women's March as well as to promote the event. We've stayed in touch with Sophia over the last few years and have been able to watch her growth in the community: She was nominated by San Francisco's mayor to the Commission on the Status of Women, and she's now running for a spot on SF's Assembly District 19  slate as a Democratic state delegate. There's so much to dig into and we're so happy to start off the year empowering womxn focused on real political change.

Follow Sophia at her website and on Instagram @ sophia_a_sf

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 500+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).

As we're preparing to participate in Sundance 2021 virtually, we thought it'd be a good time to take you back to our  first time at Sundance in 2019. This was recorded after our second full day of round the clock interviews, press lines, red carpets, and after parties...and we are exhausted, delirious, running on adrenaline, and liquored up! It's a true glimpse into what goes on to your mental state while covering one of the biggest film festivals in the world. Enjoy!

Hey Bitch Talkers! We're headed (virtually) to Sundance 2021!! Thought we would officially share the good news. We're excited to be invited back for our third year in a row and to bring you some familiar and not so familiar voices!

Before we get into Sundance 2021, let's head back to Sundance 2020 when Erin and our honorary bitch, John Wildman (from our Festival Daily Buzz team) talk with esteemed director Steve James and subjects Dr. Amara Enyia and Maze Jackson from the episodic - City So Real.  This show couldn't be more relevant in this time of political theater mixed with deep seated racism and upheaval.

We had a fantastic time talking with these three about Chicago and it's political machine and hope you all will watch City So Real streaming now on Nat Geo and Hulu.

Welcome to Flash Back Friday!

With 500+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners). We're headed back to Park City for a Sundance Film Festival 2020 conversation with director Ramona Diaz and musician Ruby Ibarra from the documentary A Thousand Cuts.

A Thousand Cuts is an important and timely documentary about the trials and tribulations of Maria Ressa, prominent journalist and founder of Rappler, the top online news site in the Philippines. Her criticism of the government, particularly under President Duterte's rule, has led to death threats, time in prison, and in June 2020 she was found guilty of cyber libel in the Philippines.  Her tenacity and fearless journalism is one of the reasons she was named Time Magazine's person of the year in 2018.  Director Ramona Diaz discusses the importance of this documentary, and the parallels between attacks on freedom of the press in both the Philippines and the US. Bay Area lyricist Ruby Ibarra  created an original song for the doc, and shares her thoughts on the importance of activism in this moment. This is a scary time. Watch this documentary, stay informed, and support freedom of the press. Not all heroes wear capes.

A Thousand Cuts will premiere tonight, Friday, January 8 on your local PBS network.

Our first episode of the year features our new friend of the show, director Melissa Haizlip. Her film, Mr. Soul, features her uncle, Ellis Haizlip - a queer, Black, television producer and host of the first known Black variety show called Soul out of New York City.  We talk with Melissa in depth about the importance of the show Soul that ran from 1968 - 1973 on PBS stations across the country, James Baldwin, Black culture, Lenny Kravitz, poetry, the magic of Robert Glasper, and more.

The show Soul is an extremely important part of American culture and we hope that Melissa's film will spark a new interest in Ellis Haizlip and his Black culture movement. You can find Mr. Soul on different platforms here. We hope you find this film as informative and revolutionary as we did.

Somehow we have made it to the end of 2020. This year's been too real and the year that can't stop/won't stop decided to come at us hard during the holidays. In our last Basic Bitch of 2020, we talk about co-host Angela's father, Tony Tabora, who passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks after Thanksgiving.

Tony was a surprise guest on our 500th episode event back in October and we thought it only fitting to honor him and his spirit in our last podcast episode of the year.  We know this isn't one of our normal Basic Bitches but we hope to not only lift up Tony's life but to inspire y'all to reach out and say hello to a loved one.

Thanks for listening.

As they say, third time is a charm and we're so happy to bring y'all our last interview of 2020 with Bill and Turner Ross. We met the fellas earlier in the year at the Sundance Film Festival  and they haven't been able to get rid of us since.

We catch up with the Ross brothers to see how the rest of their pandemic year has gone, if they're starting any new projects, how New Orleans is doing  this far into COVID, what are they doing (if anything) for the holidays, and more. We absolutely love these guys and wanna say thanks for one of our favorite films of the year - Bloody Nose Empty Pockets - and for always saying yes when we ask them to be on the podcast. Y'all are cool.

You can stream Bloody Nose Empty Pockets on YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu, and Amazon Prime Video.
