Much like its title, this is a movie that stays with you. On its surface, it's a film about a man coming home to his childhood neighborhood that he no longer recognizes. But in the context of a social uprising in support of black lives, this film is a cautionary tale. Director/producer/writer Merawi Gerima is here to make sure his community in DC not only has a voice, but does not get erased. We sit down with him to discuss why he felt a sense of urgency to tell this story, and how he hopes this film can become part of a larger conversation that leads towards real systematic change. We get into his stylistic choices, and how casting locals from the neighborhood (including his mother, filmmaker Shirikiana Aina) added authenticity to the story. We also give a shout out to Ava DuVernay's production company, Array, for opening important doors for marginalized voices to be heard. We hope you enjoy our interview, support this film, and remain part of the conversation.
Residue is streaming on Netflix now!
Check out Merawi's powerful Director's Intro to the film.

We got on the mics right after a pretty full day of filming for our upcoming 500th episode. We're a little tired, sun drunk, and maybe even a little boozy - but we get into talking about the passing of one of our favorite supreme's, RBG, Ange's conversation with her dad about what and who DoorDash is (wtf is a dash?!), taking care of our aging parents, dirty Haight street hippies, the largest of large pizzas, filming around San Francisco, and a shout out to our videographer (and friend of the show), Evelyn Obamos. If you need a laugh, we got you.

Chef Pierre Thiam is a gift to the food industry and he is working hard to give farmers in West Africa a platform and pathway to the food that they grow.
What a treat it was for us to talk with the chef, cookbook author, and social justice activist. We had a wonderful conversation about his story — moving from the Senegalese capital city Dakar to New York City. We also chat about what's bringing him joy right now, how his restaurant Taranga is changing with the needs of the NYC community, what fonio is, and where you can get it, and more.
Please support Pierre's work by purchasing one of his cookbooks or buying a bag (or two!) of fonio at your local retailer.

It may have been the weirdest week of our lives. Some thought the apocalypse was upon us. It wasn't as if the smoke and the record heat was enough, but then throw in a day that never saw the sun - it got funky, folks.
We caught up to talk about the day that was orange, plus a bunch of other topics like, who's your celebrity #1, walking in on your parents having sex more than once (is that a thing!?), booger walls (barf), and more. This might be the most random of our recent Basic's so sit down, strap in, poor yourself a drink, and let's get weird.

We're flashing back to 2018 and the 38th annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival with the director of the documentary Satan & Adam V. Scott Balcerek and one of the subjects Adam Gussow. (If it sounds like Erin interviewed them alone, your ears are right. Captain Party and Producer Char were out there living their best lives travelling around California for a bit.)
Satan and Adam is the story of an unlikely friendship, the blues, and social commentary that spans 20 years. It's a timely story that we are happy to capture and share with you. Satan and Adam is streaming now on Netflix and this episode is dedicated to Mr. Satan (Sterling Magee) who passed away this week from COVID-19.

We had so much fun chatting with comedian Nicole Tersigni, author of "Men to Avoid in Art and Life". She explains how a joke that started as a twitter thread became a book in just a year's time, and how she came up with the different types of men to avoid (the mansplainer, the concern troll, the comedian, the sexpert, and the patronizer). We discuss men's surprising reaction to this book, and how it has benefited the education of her 9 year old daughter. Thank you to Nicole, for understanding how important it is for us to find humor in this time. When this is all over, we're coming to Detroit for drinks!

It's time for another basic bitch! We discuss the pros and cons of being trapped on an island in the middle of a pandemic (shout out to friend of the show, Stephanie, who's currently trapped in New Caledonia), and our thoughts on San Francisco's annual concert, Outside Lands, going virtual this year with Inside Lands. Finally, we come up with an idea for a new music festival, OLF 2022! For details, you're just gonna have to listen...as a side note, we're willing to sell this idea in exchange for VIP passes and a golf cart. Let's make it happen!

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 400+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).
We're taking you back to Sundance where we spoke with director Maite Alberdi, of The Mole Agent. This was one of our favorite films of Sundance! Based in Chile, this documentary is about a man in his 80s who is hired to be a mole in a retirement community. What starts out as a funny spy movie, becomes the most heartfelt documentary that'll leave you in tears. We're all feeling a sense of loneliness and isolation, and this documentary perfectly displays how important it is to keep in touch with the people that matter most.

Lingua Franca is a hauntingly beautiful film that will (hopefully) stay with you long after the credits start to roll. A conversation with the film's writer/director/producer/editor/star, Isabel Sandoval, proved to be just as satisfying! We discuss the evolution of the script after the 2016 election, the importance of marginalized artists lifting each other up, what makes the film's sex scene so unique, and the importance of representation in the trans community. She also shares her special relationship with co-star and acting legend Lynn Cohen, who passed away earlier this year, and why she's especially afraid to travel in this time. We're excited to hear that she has future projects in the works, and are so proud to support a talented, trans, woman of color. Keep it coming!
Lingua Franca was picked up by Ava DuVernay's production company, Array, and is streaming on Netflix.

Ange, aka Captain Party, had the chance to go glamping with her friend and twin girls up in the Mendocino redwoods. During our catch-up, Ange's story was a good reminder for our team that even though we love the children in our lives, we also love our freedom and taking a nap anytime we want to is pretty spectacular.
We also get in to our upcoming 500th episode event that's coming together for early October and a special shout out to our Ko-fi supporters! If you haven't yet, you can buy us a cup of coffee in the link below! Yeah, seriously. :)
