We return to Park City for a Sundance Film Festival 2020 conversation with director Ramona Diaz and musician Ruby Ibarra from the documentary A Thousand Cuts.
A Thousand Cuts is an important and timely documentary about the trials and tribulations of Maria Ressa, prominent journalist and founder of Rappler, the top online news site in the Philippines. Her criticism of the government, particularly under President Duterte's rule, has led to death threats, time in prison, and in June 2020 she was found guilty of cyber libel in the Philippines. Her tenacity and fearless journalism is one of the reasons she was named Time Magazine's person of the year in 2018. Director Ramona Diaz discusses the importance of this documentary, and the parallels between attacks on freedom of the press in both the Philippines and the US. Bay Area lyricist Ruby Ibarra created an original song for the doc, and shares her thoughts on the importance of activism in this moment. This is a scary time. Watch this documentary, stay informed, and support freedom of the press. Not all heroes wear capes.
A Thousand Cuts is available in theaters and virtual cinemas nationwide August 7th.

Hello there! In our last Basic, we neglected to talk about all the news that happened while Erin was road trippin' and the rest of the team took some time off.
In this episode, we catch up on AOC's thoughtful retort to Rep. Yoho non-apology (about calling her a fucking bitch!) on the House Floor, John Lewis's death, Emmy nominations, Biden's VP decision - (because who remembers Hillary's VP pick?! )- it's an important decision now more than ever. We also talk about Herman Cain passing away from COVID as well as another death from COVID that hits a bit more closer to home for us. Thanks for listening.

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 400+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).
We're bringing you back to Sundance, to an interview with Lulu Wang, the writer and director of one of our favorite films of the festival, The Farewell. We discuss being Chinese-American, showing another side to the film's star Awkwafina, and the love Lulu has for her grandmother. We laughed, we cried, both during the film AND during the interview! Lulu is SO TALENTED, we can't wait to see what she does next. Support this film! But bring some tissues.....you've been warned.

Erin breaks down her California road trip, while Ange and Char discuss the highs and lows of life in quarantine. We end it with our thoughts on the return of baseball (for better or worse) and an exciting turn for women in sports!

We're headed back to the Sundance Film Festival to share our interview with the filmmakers of the upcoming documentary The Fight, Elyese Steinberg and Eli B. Despres, and featured ACLU Voting Rights attorney (and Bay Area native!), Dale Ho. In this interview, we talk with the filmmakers about their incredible access to the ACLU attorneys and their history making cases, how they shot the film in real time, and for Dale, what it was like to have camera's follow you while arguing one of the biggest cases of his life. The Fight was one of our favorite doc's of Sundance 2020 and probably one of the most timely to watch.
The Fight comes out this Friday, July 31 and you can stream it through the Roxie Virtual Cinema. Support your local movie theater!

One of the highlights of Sundance 2020 was this chat with Ron Howard, director of the documentary, Rebuilding Paradise. This is a powerful documentary about the fires that raged across the Northern California town of Paradise, California in 2018. As residents of the Bay Area who lived through the effects of this tragedy, we were especially moved by this film. Ron discusses how he picked this story, what he learned about the community in Paradise, and what it was like sifting through painful real life footage.
Rebuilding Paradise will be opening digitally and in select theaters on July 31st. Click here for more information.

Welcome back to the Sundance Film Festival 2020, where we were thrilled to be part of the red carpet event for the Go-Go's self titled documentary. We got to speak with all the ladies in the band, as well as the director, Alison Ellwood. We discuss why this was the right time to tell their story, the secret behind the band's staying power, and of course, we get a little political. We love their feisty spirit, and it was an honor to speak to the ladies behind the music we've been listening to since we were kids.
The Go-Go's documentary will air on Showtime on August 1st!

The documentary The Fight - (about a scrappy team of heroic ACLU lawyers in an electrifying battle over abortion rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights and voting rights) comes out later this month. We got to see the film for our initial interview at the Sundance Film Festival with filmmakers Elyse Steinberg, Eli Despres, and ACLU lawyer Dale Ho - and as we'd like to say, we 100% fangirled over Dale. He is truly an American hero - fighting for our voting rights everyday. Also, as we found out, Dale is from the Bay Area, so that made him a million times cooler in our book.
So, what do you do while you're sheltering-in-place and have some time on your hands? You reach out to the ACLU Director of Voting Rights Project (and Oakland A's fan) to come back on your show to talk about what he's been up to since we last saw him. We're so lucky he said yes, and to be honest, he recorded this episode while he was on a getaway with his family. The guy is literally saving our country and he took time out for your bitches. Anway, let's get into it with Dale and we're excited for you to see his work in action when The Fight releases on July 31.

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 400+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).
We're bringing you back to March of this year (which may as well have been a lifetime ago), with one of our favorite recurring guests, W. Kamau Bell. He was gracious enough to hop on the phone with us during the beginning of the Coronavirus lock down while he is quarantined with his family and helping to home school his daughters. Listen in as we talk about what he's been up to, where he's finding content to entertain his kids, how his Mom is holding up, when his CNN show is coming back, + MORE.
Check out his Netflix special, Private School Negro, his book, The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell, and the newest season of his Emmy Award winning CNN docuseries, United Shades of America, starting July 19th.

We're rewinding back to the January 2020 Sundance Film Festival chatting with the director of We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, Andrew Fried. The film is a time capsule featuring the FLS members in the summer of 2005 making their debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Andrew followed the group who comprised of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Christopher Jackson, Anthony Veneziale, Bill Sherman, Chris Sullivan, Arthur Lewis and the other members up to the one month run in a small Manhattan theatre in early 2019. Before In the Heights and Hamilton, there was Freestyle Love Supreme
