Nothing thrills me more than being able to have a smart ass, sarcastic title, except...having a smart ass title that is relevant to current events.
NO ONE IS EATING THE PETS. forfuckssake
Aaaanyway, we wanted to give Haitian history a little nod and talk about the women who were instrumental in the Haitian Revolution. We seem to be on a revolution theme lately.
Thanks for listening.

I can't decide what translates better into "bitches" for our purposes, perras or putas. The patriarchy would call us whores AND bitches, so take your pick. (If you're a Spanish speaker, please let me know which is a better translation!)
Anyway, September is Hispanic Culture Month, so we are discussing 2 supremely badass women in this episode. One is called the first Latina feminist, and she was WAY ahead of her time! The other is one you've definitely heard of, but I bet there's stuff you didn't know!

Marie Antoinette is famous for primarily 2 things: saying "Let them eat cake!" and losing her head to the guillotine. But there is a whole person behind those stories and there are many mistruths, myths, and downright lies told about Marie Antoinette.
I summarized it in this blog entry: https://kellymcclain.blogspot.com/2024/08/the-marie-antoinette-you-dont-know.html
My hope is that you come away from this episode recognizing Marie Antoinette for more than those 2 famously sad things.

August 9th was National Booklovers Day, and Lisa suggested we cover Mary Shelley. We are planning a much more in depth episode on just her probably for October. But in this episode we cover some of the greatest female authors of the early days; these women blazed trails where society was saying women weren't allowed: colleges, science, having jobs...in general anything outside of the housewife realm (eyeroll).

So Listen, this podcast loves all of her listeners, but we are pretty unapologetic about politics. It's not about being polite, it's about true freedom.
There are 90 days until another historic election. Check your voting status and make sure no fuckery has happened with your registration, or register for the first time. And Please VOTE BLUE. Once we are out of the woods and Republicans get their shit together, you can vote for who you want if the GOP are your boys; But until we get Christian Nationalism and Gilead out of the way, please Vote Blue. The women in your life need it. The country needs it. Plus Tim Walz is the dad we all need! Vote!

July is disability pride month. Did you know that? Well we recorded this on the anniversary day that the ADA became law. We are just that organized! (ahem. that's all Lisa) If you don't know what the hell the ADA is, or what disability pride is, this episode is one you should really check out. The ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act, which became law in 1990. It has been HUGE in making sure that all kinds of people have access to all parts of life. But before that, going way back...disabled folks were treated like total SHIT, even in the US (maybe especially in the US?!). And to get that law passed, a bunch of disabled folks CRAWLED up the freakin' Capitol steps! Crawled! Because they were not gonna take that crap anymore! Badass!!!!
Ok so I'm fired up. Anyway...Check out the blog at: https://kellymcclain.blogspot.com/2024/07/the-ada-disability-pride-month.html

This week’s episode is honors the birth of the United States and a few of the badass, fearless women who had a hand in securing our freedom from Britain. (Look at me, withholding the snarky things I want to say right now. Are we proud?) You should have a listen to our very first episode about Sybil Ludington - who did more than Paul Revere but didn’t get a long ass poem written about her.

There are 429 National Parks in the US, and 76 of them are named after badass women or a women's issue. Yeah, there should be more. We found out after we recorded that Biden very recently signed an Executive Order aimed at increasing recognition of outstanding women within the National Parks. The order mandates a review and identification of sites significant to women's contributions, aiming for a more inclusive representation.
So we missed that in the ep, but I wanted to make sure you knew. What we DO cover in this ep is 7 women who did *monumental* (haha see what I did there?) things in American history and were honored in a park, or with a monument or historical site.
Thanks for listening! We love you guys!

In our last ep, we talked about the warrior queen whose name pronunciation baffles many as it turns out- Boudicca. (It’s usually boo-dik-ah, btw) I thought it was just me. Anyway, turns out there are a bunch of other warrior Queens we’ve mostly never heard of…what a shock, eh?
So this episode covers a handful of them. We hope you find it inspiring and realize that women have been amazing leaders since forever!

called “Boudicca, Queen of War”… I Think I watched it on Prime. It’s decent.
There’s also a decent flick About one of this episode’s Queens- Rani Lakshmibai. the movie is called “The Warrior Queen of Jhansi” and it’s also on Prime.
Check out the blog for yet another badass that we didn’t cover in this ep:

I love alliteration, OK?
Boudicca/Boadicea was a Celtic Queen around 60AD who inspired and led a rebellion against the army of the Roman Empire. This episode goes over the history of the time period, and her story. She remains an enduring symbol of rebellion against the oppression, defiance of gender roles, and saying fuck you to the patriarchy ;)
trigger warning: Kelly mispronouncing all kinds of Latin words, and also SA.
