Youth flag participation has soared in an almost impossibly short time, especially among girls. According to data from the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 100,000 American high school girls played flag football at school during the 2025-26 academic year, which constitutes a 48% jump from the previous year and an increase of more than 550% from just five years ago. By the NFL’s numbers, approximately 800,000 girls from age 6 to 17 now compete in some capacity. We speak with Amanda Mull, Bloomberg Businessweek Senior Reporter.

President Donald Trump said the US would not attack Iran ahead of November’s midterm elections, citing “productive discussions” with the Islamic Republic. Trump's comments came despite Iran ramping up attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran-backed militants in Yemen attacking energy facilities in Saudi Arabia. The US will keep a naval blockade of Iranian exports in place, and recently moved its B-1B bombers from a base in the United Kingdom due to possible Iran-linked threats. The remarks follow recent reporting in The Atlantic that Trump was mulling plans to strike Iran before the midterm contests and that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare options for strikes beforehand.

A record-breaking run in stocks hit a wall as still-elevated oil prices stoked concerns that potential inflationary pressures could trigger Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes. Those worries sent the S&P 500 down from an all-time high. Brent crude fluctuated around $100 as traders weighed a pickup in Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz against resilient Middle East flows. Ten-year Treasuries bounced from session lows after a solid $39 billion sale, but yields remained near the highest since 2002.

Residents in West Texas describe noise, odors and health concerns from a gas flare operating near their homes as oil producers face scrutiny over pollution and their commitments to curb emissions. Oil giants including ExxonMobil, Occidental Petroleum and others have pledged to reduce or eliminate the flaring practice, but a new investigation by Bloomberg News and The Examination found persistent flames at sites tied to companies participating in the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring initiative. For more, we speak with Ben Elgin, Bloomberg News ESG Reporter & Will Evans, Senior Reporter for The Examination.

Just a week ahead of the earnings season, the S&P 500 headed toward its first record close since August. Strong corporate earnings, enthusiasm around the artificial intelligence trade and a US economy that has so far avoided a significant slowdown have fueled a roughly 14% advance in the S&P 500 this year. The rally is getting additional support from lower oil prices, which have helped temper concerns about rising consumer costs.

The US added fewer jobs than expected in September and wage growth slowed, signaling some caution among employers amid rising costs. Nonfarm payrolls increased 29,000 last month after a downward revision to the prior two months, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data out Friday. That missed all estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, partly reflecting a growing workforce.

A FOIA request has uncovered another little-known feature of life at the top of the Justice Department: attorneys general have used alternate email addresses to conduct government business for over a decade. This time around, Bloomberg News Senior Investigative Reporter Jason Leopold obtained the alias used by former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The discovery raises broader questions about government transparency and access to public records. Leopold explains how alternate email addresses can make FOIA searches more difficult when requesters don’t know which accounts officials used to conduct government business -- and how revealing those aliases can help journalists locate records that might otherwise be missed. He speaks with Bloomberg Businessweek Daily hosts Carol Massar and Alexis Christoforous.
