WGN Radio today announced that Dave Eanet will retire as the sports anchor on the Bob Sirott weekday morning drive show and Andy Masur will assume the position effective August 28. Eanet, whose two stints on WGN Radio encompass more than 30 years, will continue as the voice of the Northwestern Wildcat football and men’s basketball games broadcast on the 50,000-watt station and serve as a fill-in anchor on the WGN-TV sports desk.

Dave Eanet is a respected voice in college athletics and has been synonymous with Northwestern football radio broadcasts since 1990. The Northwestern University alum first joined WGN Radio in 1984 as the morning sports anchor and was part of the Chicago Bears WGN Radio team until leaving in 1988. He returned to the station in 1996 as sports director when WGN Radio became the rightsholder for Northwestern University Athletics and Eanet added men’s basketball play-by-play to his resume. Eanet also filled in on play-by-play for Chicago Cubs broadcasts on WGN Radio in the late 1990s through early 2000s.

“Can’t believe it’s been 41 years since I first set foot in the WGN studios,” said Mr. Eanet. “As I close this chapter of my career, the word that comes to mind is ‘grateful.’ I’m so thankful to the entire WGN family for their friendship and support over the years. It’s not just the names you know, but the entire crew on and off the air. I’m forever indebted to the managers, engineers, producers, newspeople, sales team, and all the others who have made WGN such a special place to work. Most of all, I’m thankful to the listeners who have a special relationship with this station. I will miss the day-to-day connection, but so glad I’ll continue calling Wildcat football and basketball. After calling the last game in the old Ryan Field, I look forward to the first game in the new Ryan Field next year!” 

“Dave Eanet has been a cherished voice on WGN Radio for nearly three consecutive decades,” said WGN Radio Vice President and General Manager Mary Sandberg Boyle. “From his weekday morning sportscasts to his superior play-by-play for Northwestern and as a fill-in sports anchor on WGN-TV, his remarkable work has been a mainstay for our audiences every day. He’s had a rigorous schedule that few could have balanced as well as Dave. I have immense respect for Dave and admire his decision to scale back his morning show broadcast responsibilities. It’s his kindness as a broadcaster and coworker that really stand out.”

A decorated voice in sports broadcasting, Eanet has earned industry recognition throughout his career. He has received multiple honors as a leading sportscaster and for excellence in play-by-play from the Illinois Broadcasters Association, Chicago Headline Club, and Associated Press. He was named a 2005 honorary inductee into the Northwestern University Athletics Hall of Fame and the 2011 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Andy Masur, a familiar voice to WGN Radio listeners as the weekend and fill-in sports anchor, will join the Bob Sirott morning show, heard 6 am to 10 am weekdays. Masur will also continue to host the Hamp & O’B Show pre- and post-game shows featuring NFL Hall of Famer Dan Hampton and 1963 NFL Champion Ed O’Bradovich which air on WGN Radio during football season.

“I am thrilled to share that our own Andy Masur will assume morning show sports duties going forward,” said Ms. Sandberg Boyle. “Andy is a talented broadcaster who has built a rapport with the WGN Radio audience as a regular fill-in for Dave and as our weekend sports anchor. We are lucky to have him.”

Andy Masur is also on his second stint at WGN Radio. Born and raised in Glenview, Masur has always had a passion for sports, particularly baseball and basketball, and broadcasting. He was part of WGN Radio’s broadcasts of the Chicago Cubs from 1999 through 2006 before leaving to become one of the radio voices of the San Diego Padres. Upon his return to WGN Radio in 2014, Masur called Chicago White Sox baseball on the station from 2019 through 2020. Masur has also served as a college basketball play-by-play announcer for Loyola University Chicago, UW-Milwaukee, and the Missouri Valley Conference TV Network. He was named a 2020 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year finalist by the National Sports Media Association.

“I am truly honored to be taking the baton from Dave Eanet, who has been such a fixture here at WGN. I like to think he prepared me for this day, and I’m looking forward to carrying on the great tradition of sports on 720 WGN,” said Mr. Masur.
