We had a great time at the Air Force One 2023 event at the Museum of Flight. This is a bonus episode we did talking about that Roadmap Roadtrip!
We had originally done these interviews and segments on site at the event, but there was an audio issue, so these are studio follow ups.
It's not every day that you get a chance to touch a piece of history. But for a select group of detailers, this dream becomes a reality every year, as they gather in Seattle to restore the 1959 Boeing 707-153 known as SAM 970, a part of American Presidential legacy. The Air Force One Detailing Team is one such group of 40 highly skilled volunteers who take part in an eight-day event where the plane is transformed from distressed to pristine. Read on to find out more about this exceptional team.
The Air Force One Detailing Team is no ordinary group. It is made up of highly skilled members of The Detail Mafia, entrepreneurs within the detailing industry. These detailers are so passionate about their work that they each pay their own way to participate in the project, including airfare, hotel, and other expenses. The team requires that each member must have at least two years of membership in The Detail Mafia and must apply to be selected for a spot on the team.
The first restoration work on SAM 970 began in 2003 when Renny Doyle saw the plane in a distressed state, after spending ten years on an open-air tarmac. At that time, the focus was on restoration. However, the restoration work continued year after year. Today, the team has shifted from just restoration to preservation, and they carry out their work with an immense sense of pride.
The Air Force One Detailing Team is meticulous in their work, and they maintain the original appearance of the plane while still using modern techniques. The team takes great care to research the detailing techniques that were used in the earlier decades, and they work tirelessly to ensure that Air Force One is stunningly perfect. During the eight-day event, each team member works on a specific part of the plane to restore it. From the wheels to the upholstery, every part is carefully detailed to perfection.
Detailers Roadmap is honored to be a part of this event as a Gold Sponsor.
