  • Searching For the Truth by Barbara Birchim

Barbara Birchim’s husband, Capt. James Birchim, was listed as Missing In Action in the Vietnam War in 1968. It didn’t take long for her to realize that the government wasn’t giving her the truth about what really happened that day in 1968. Barbara realized that it was going to be her responsibility to uncover the truth. Barbara was surprised to find out that the public didn’t know how this MIA issue was ongoing, even today, and that it’s the family that has to pursue the answers.

This is Barbara’s second book in her search for answers and the lengths she had to go through to get them. She didn’t even find out until 1998 that her husband was in Special Operations which answered some of her questions as to why she was having so much difficulty getting documents and answers from government officials. Barbara’s two books give the reader a good look at what it’s like to be put in this situation with a family member missing in action. The government says they leave no man behind. That’s a lie.

Because Barbara had so many documents and because she lives in a fire zone, she decided she needed to get the information into book form in case she lost her house in a fire. Barbara’s  first book, Is Anybody Listening, is a non-fiction account of all the agencies involved with covering up this issue of MIA/POWs. This book starts with WWII to 2005 and her journey in searching for answers through it. From 2005 to 2021, Barbara had accumulated many more facts about her husband’s case and felt compelled to write her second book,  Searching For The Truth. This book had to be a fiction based book because she couldn’t reveal her sources.

  • Inns and Outs of Fremantle 1829-1929: A social history of Fremantle and its hotels from 1829 – 1929 by Allen Graham

There is no town in Western Australia which has a richer history and heritage than Fremantle. Established in 1829 it was where the first colonists to what was then called Swan River Colony first landed. However, the history of Fremantle cannot be told in isolation so any story about Fremantle is also a story about Western Australia and if storekeeping was the first occupation to be followed in the new colony, then hotel keeping was the next. Within six months of the colony being founded Fremantle had four hotels so this book traces the history of those early Fremantle hotels and how they, and the hotels that followed, shaped the culture and appearance of Fremantle today. To know the history of those hotels is to know the history of Fremantle. The Inns and Outs of Fremantle 1829-1929 is the first book in a trilogy about Fremantle written by Allen Graham. You can learn more about Allen and his Fremantle Walking Tours at Fremantle History Walking Tours.

  • POWER OF THE MIND: Know Yourself, Your Hidden Unconscious Mind by Dr. Anthony Emmett

Know yourself – the real you within your layers of thinking.
The unknown potential which exists in each of us lies in our unconscious mind. As a medical doctor and plastic surgeon, the author observed the way a patient’s health and well-being was influenced by the thoughts they held in their mind, especially their subconscious. Appreciation of surgical results can be closely affected by the self-image. Body healing is run from the unconscious mind. How you feel about the results is influenced by your subconscious.

After the author retired from medical practice, he retrained as an artist.  He was given skilled help for a couple of years to explore the deeper levels of consciousness. Dr. Emmitt had the intuitive desire to know who he really was – beyond the family identity he was born with. He found in childhood the ways “knowing” could just arrive, and he sought the source when given the opportunity.

The subconscious is a working part of your everyday life and you use it all the time without realizing it. You are more influenced from your unconscious mind than you may realize.

This anthology is a collection of some of the many poems and songs, which those men who fought and wrote about that conflagration (and the women who waited for them to come home again) have left us as part of their legacy. Poets from the English-speaking world such as  Joyce Kilmer (Rendezvous With Death) for one. Wilfred Owen (Dulce et Decorum Est) and Edgar Guest (Things That Make A Great Soldier) are included in the book. It is through their eyes we see this war.

Also included are works that glorify the soldiers who fought and died. It contains works that show the sad side and horror of war, the destruction of the lives who gave all. The reader will see a changed attitude toward war in some of the poets.

Also, the reader will hear from the mothers, wives, brothers and sisters. Humorous poems like The Guns of Verdun where the poet writes a conversation between the German guns and the French artillery.

This work is a must read for anyone with an interest in the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, war history, as well as poetry in general.
