  • From outback hats to New York fashion week with Felicity Brown

She’s somewhat of a celebrity in outback Australia, and not just because of her unique and highly sort after millinery skills.

Felicity Brown has a smile and energy that would light up the darkest of rooms. A poster child for what happens when you say “yes” to life. No matter the obstacles.

It’s a big introduction but when you listen to this episode I guarantee your heart will almost explode as ‘Flic’ shares with us her story of how one simple act of kindness went on to change her entire life…….. and put her on the runway of New York fashion week.

It won’t be the story alone that warms your soul, it’s the way she shares it with such love and gratitude as if it only happened yesterday. And how her small about community united to help her realise a dream and opportunity of a lifetime.

This episode is a lesson on bravery, kindness, community and the strength to say yes. To back yourself and take a chance.

Thank you Felicity, this was one of my favourite chats.

  • Raw learnings of a modern day business with Jessica Miller

This is another one of those episodes where I broach a scary topic. Scary because I’m just starting out on my DEI journey (diversity, equity, inclusivity) and like many others, I have a fear of saying the ‘wrong thing’.

But it’s that fear that prevents us from having hard conversations. And isn’t it better to have them and face them head on so we can learn and move forward doing it better?

And isn’t ok if we don’t always get it right?

In this episode Jessica Miller bravely shares her journey in business and what led her to requiring a DEI coach.

And if I’m straight up honest, I didn’t know what that meant so fair chance if you’re reading this, you’re also about to find out.

Oh and forgive me for thinking Karratha was just a small outback WA town….. turns out it’s a city. Traffic lights, Mcdonalds…. the works!

  • Over sharing vs being authentic in business

Yeah, we know, it’s all about humanising your brand. Your audience wants to see YOU! People buy from people and all of that.

Sometimes I feel like the more we preach to ‘be your authentic self’, the weirder some people get.

Personally, I think we walk a fine line between being authentic and oversharing. Like self-promotion isn’t scary enough.

If I’d been COMPLETELY honest about what was happening in my world in 2021, you would have thought I’d all gone nuts, and no one would’ve wanted to work with me.

So, I chose to drip feed my hardships……. Because firstly, some things are personal. And that’s OK.

And secondly, as much as I had the sh!ttiest year of all time, I was still more than capable of showing up and doing a damn good job too. And that is more important (in my opinion).

So being authentic vs oversharing…. Let’s discuss.

  • Building a business in a remote community with The Rural Naturopath

Are you scared to go the naturopath because you’re afraid they’ll tell you you’re allergic to wheat and dairy and that you’ll need to start spending $400 a month on supplements? Me too! But that’s not how it always is. And also, what happens to the people (like my brother) that are sheep and wheat farmers, living out in the middle of nowhere?

How do they make massive dietary changes?

How do they access alternative medicines, supplements, foods and health services whilst living remotely?

Some outback Australian towns and communities often struggle to get ‘normal’ fresh fruit and vegies let alone all the other dairy free, gluten free blah blah blah alternatives there are these days.

So, because I’m a massive fan of all the above questions and any woman living in a rural and remote area that’s smashing it in business, I thought why not chat to the woman who’s doing just that. In this episode I chat to Hayley Dawson, also known as The Rural Naturopath, about how she’s grown a successful business living in country Victoria and how she helps others with their health journey’s, that also live remotely. Because both can be done!

  • The power of one with solopreneur Alex Meadows

The power of one with solopreneur Alex Meadows

    Chills. Down. My. Spine.

I’m all about ‘giving back’ as a business owner but Alex Meadows took it to a whole new level. And far out, if this doesn’t inspire you,I’ll eat my knickers.

“It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a country to protect them.” Perth hairdresser, and solopreneur Alex Meadow was turning 40. On a self-improvement journey for the first time in her life, instead of a party, Alex unselfishly decided to throw a party that would give back to someone else. That someone else was the Daniel Morcombe foundation. A cause I believe would be close to the heart for every Australian parent.

I was spontaneously invited to Alex’s event, The Great Spectacular, by my friend Jay Crisp Crow with absolutely no idea what I had agreed to attend.Little did I know I would be so moved, inspired and honoured to be a part of something so special. In this Episode Alex shares her story and together we unpack some pretty inspiring sh!t.

  • Is good old - fashioned customer service dead?

EP 25 | Is good old- fashioned customer service dead?

Look I’ve been saying it for a long time; “good customer service isn’t good enough”.

And guess what? It’s free. Outstanding customer service is free. I know, shocker, right?

So many businesses get (borderline) obsessive over their social media when in reality, even the best Instagram strategy in the world won’t save you if your existing clients don’t absolutely ‘love you sick’.

I hate saying this but not all businesses have suffered at the hand of Covid. Many have thrived. But for how long?

I will validate that in Australia there’s an across the board shortage when it comes to finding good staff to employ, and that makes it hard. No doubt about it. In this case, you can still show up with your clients by acknowledging and owning that which you cannot change, i.e - “we thank you for your ongoing support at this time. As we’re currently experiencing staff shortages we apologise if your experience with us was less than exceptional and we thank you for your patience as we navigate these tricky times”.

However, DO NOT ever take times of boom for granted. Because what happens when it quietens down? And it will. Will your clients love you enough to support you then?

In this episode I have a good old Elsa rant about some subpar customer service experiences, particularly in the real estate industry.

Because good old-fashioned customer service…. Will never die.

  • She REALLY is The Inspired Eco Warrior

There aren’t too many people that have earnt the right to label themselves as ‘inspired’ AND a ‘warrior’ all in one sentence. But there is zero doubt that Lisa Delfante does.

I believe that you can achieve something great without having to “overcome great adversity”. I don’t think one person’s success should be measured by another’s loss.

However, having recently encountered incomprehensible loss and grief myself, I have a newfound appreciation for those with any level of achievement after enduring such hardship.

Sorry no spoiler alerts here, you’ll have to listen to this episode to find out Lisa’s very tragic tale, but I can tell you she has recently launched a business which I can foresee is going to be a great success. With or without the back story; her venture has great substance within itself.

Its innovative, heart centred and makes an environmental impact.

What I love about The Inspired Eco Warrior is it’s a business where the genuine ‘why’ behind it shines through it’s every element. And when you listen to this story, and you hear Lisa’s strength, courage and vibrant ‘can do’ attitude, I can guarantee you will feel as impressed as I do.

  • Turns out gut health really is a thing with Jess Wilson

Oh mate, I used to be the person that absolutely took the piss out of people with food intolerances.

Gluten free you say – meh! WHATEVER!

Until my own gut health kicked me in the balls. Talk about Karma.

I feel like I’m finally catching up with the rest of the world when it comes to food. Having recently experienced quite a lot of trauma in my life, it blew my mind when Perth nutritionist Jess Wilson explained how my hormones were impacting my diet choices.

For a second there I thought I ate the crème brulee tart because I had no willpower. Turns out there are greater forces at play.

Whether you want to know it or not, this stuff is damn interesting. And spoiler alert – those sausage rolls and cokes we had for breakfast when we were hung over in our 20’s, not so good after all!

  • Building a childcare empire with the queen of hustle with Jay Barr

It’s competitive and without a doubt, one of the most important industries in Australian business. After all, what is more precious than our snotty nosed kids?

I don’t know about you, but I struggle to look after my own, so I take my hat off to the everyday hero’s operating our overflowing day care centers.

In an industry that’s full of speculation and obstacles, I was curious to speak to Jay Barr to hear how she navigates such challenges whilst building her own Australian childcare empire.

With a focus on positive staff culture, Jay shares her no BS approach to business and ‘getting sh!t done’.

  • Elsa’s take on the unseen benefits of digital marketing

This is my favourite ‘view’ on the world of digital marketing for small businesses.

It’s safe to say MOST businesses get frustrated with social media and building an online presence. When you’re not seeing a lot of action or engagement, it’s understandable you might want to throw your phone through a window.

But if you’re doing a bloody good job in your business and your existing clients ‘love you sick’ then they will be talking about you. And I can guarantee when they refer you to a friend, that friend will stalk you online before making a decision to buy from you

What will that friend find, when they come looking for you??

My whole approach to mentoring businesses is that it doesn’t have to be hard. There are so many free and easy ways to grow your business and don’t worry, I make it entertaining, not boring!!
