An Italian boxer abandoned her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds on Thursday, refusing to continue after taking a heavy punch from an Algerian opponent who had been disqualified from last year’s world championships over questions about her eligibility to compete in women’s sports.
Imane Khelif, 25, was permitted to compete at the Olympics even though she had been barred last year after boxing officials said she did not meet eligibility requirements to compete in a women’s event. Another athlete also barred from last year’s world championships under similar circumstances, Lin Yu-ting, has also been cleared to fight in Paris.

The US has reached a plea deal with alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two other defendants accused of plotting the 2001 terror attacks, according to the Defense Department.
The pretrial agreement – reached after 27 months of negotiations – takes the death penalty off the table for Mohammed, Walid Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa al Hawsawi.

Thursday’s massive multi-country prisoner swap with Russia – touted by the US as the largest since the end of the Cold War – marked a major diplomatic achievement and legacy-defining moment for President Joe Biden less than six months before he leaves office.
The prisoner exchange, which included Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan, was Biden’s first major foreign policy action since announcing last month he was ending his reelection bid and endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump stopped by the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention in Chicago on Thursday for a lively on-stage interview that saw him label ABC “fake news” and get into arguments with moderators over Kamala Harris, JD Vance, and abortion.
ABC’s Rachel Scott did most of the questioning, and she led off by recalling, “You have told four congresswoman of color who, are American citizens, to go back to where they came from. You have used words like 'animal' and 'rabbid' to describe black attorneys. You attack black journalists, calling them 'a loser' saying the questions that they asked are, quote, “stupid and racist.” You've had dinner with a white supremacist at your Mar-a-Lago resort. So, my question, sir, now that you were asking black supporters to vote for you, why should black voters trust you after you have used language like that?”

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is free. Gershkovich and American veteran Paul Whelan are in U.S. custody after a massive swap of political prisoners involving the United States and Russia. Alsu Kurmasheva, another American citizen, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a green card holder, were also freed. "Their brutal ordeal is over, and they are free," President Biden said at the White House, flanked by their family members.
