A shooting near the White House triggered a lockdown after a man opened fire on Secret Service agents at a security checkpoint. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, identified as a 21-year-old Maryland man with prior run-ins with authorities. A bystander was also hit but is expected to survive. President Trump was inside at the time but not harmed. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are moving closer to a potential deal, but nothing is finalized. President Trump says an agreement is “largely negotiated,” with a short-term plan that could reopen key oil routes and reduce tensions. However, major sticking points remain — especially Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and who controls the Strait of Hormuz. The mainstream media is speculating on the sticking points and framing negotiations as a loss for the U.S.

EXCLUSIVE: Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld discusses how the 'Better Roads, Safe Streets' initiative failed its random sampling test of the signatures submitted by backers. The initiative will now have to undergo a manual tally of all 32,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot. However, the timeline is tight and it's not sure it will make it to the ballot. Supporters may have to ask the Board of Supervisors for help. Will they?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged drivers to avoid Chevron stations over Memorial Day weekend, arguing the company’s branded gas costs significantly more—often 60 to 80 cents per gallon higher than unbranded alternatives. He said cheaper, unbranded fuel comes from the same sources and meets the same standards, accusing “Big Oil” of profiting during global supply disruptions and warning consumers not to overpay just for the brand. Critics point out that most Chevron stations are independently owned. Chevron is fighting back with signs and stations that put the blame on Sacramento.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Assemblyman David Tangipa discusses AB 1560, his bill in Sacramento would prohibit anyone convicted of a “crime of public corruption” from serving as a lobbyist in California, aiming to tighten ethics rules around influence in government. It also blocks those individuals from registering as lobbyists and can void an existing lobbying certification if they’re later convicted.

The NAACP is urging Black NCAA athletes to take a stand by boycotting certain college programs in Southern states, arguing new congressional maps weaken Black voting power. Through its “Out of Bounds” campaign, the group is asking recruits to refuse scholarships and commitments, while encouraging current athletes to transfer or use their platforms to push for fair redistricting. The move is designed to apply economic and cultural pressure on schools tied to states reshaping political districts. Is it fair to the student athletes?

Surveillance video obtained by KMJ news partner ABC30 shows a man armed with a knife approaching Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz’s home around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, ringing the doorbell before moving into the backyard and banging on a back door. Fresno County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the man. Court documents show the suspect is ‘angry’ about failed restraining orders against Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, and a probation officer. Janz said he never had prior personal contact but his office defended the city in the Casto petition. “That is why we believe that he came to my house this weekend, in the middle of the night." The suspect has a long history with the court — 21 felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 1988. The charges include elder abuse, sexual assault, and several DUIs. Torrez served jail time for the tear gas possession, released from prison in 2024, according to court records. Records show he is also a registered sex offender, stemming from a 1995 case. A parole report said Torrez’s performance has been “unsatisfactory.” A judge set his bail at $30,000 and issued a protective order for Janz and his family.

BREAKING NEWS: The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, 94, and several others over the 1996 shootdown of two civilian planes operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue, which killed four people. Prosecutors allege Castro, then Cuba’s defense minister, played a role in ordering the attack. Charges include murder, destruction of aircraft, and conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals. The historic indictment marks a major escalation in U.S.-Cuba tensions.

Caltrans is exploring a futuristic idea to run high-speed buses—capable of 80 to 140 mph—on dedicated freeway lanes across California. Is the state waiving the white flag on High Speed Rail? Will this add a lane or take one away from cars? Still in the early research phase, the plan would require major infrastructure upgrades, specialized vehicles, and new safety systems.

Kentucky’s Republican primary turned into a political earthquake. Longtime Congressman Thomas Massie—known for bucking his party and even Donald Trump—was defeated by Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein. The race became a brutal loyalty test inside the GOP, with millions spent and Trump personally campaigning to take Massie out. The result sends a clear message nationwide: crossing Trump can cost you your seat.
