Brownfield Anchor/Reporter Brent Barnett and University of Missouri Market Analyst Scott Brown give a weekly recap of the markets and discuss how it can impact farmers’ bottom lines.
This week in the markets – Live fed cattle prices are $2.00 higher on the week, which puts them more than $11 above the same period last year, and feeder cattle prices were not tested as many markets were closed due to the holiday period. February live cattle were unchanged on the week, and January feeder cattle were down $0.80 on the week. Choice box beef was up $1.00 this week. Cash hogs are down $0.90 this week. February lean hog futures were down $3.10 on the week. Pork cutout values were up $0.80 this week, which puts them $5.50 below year-ago levels.
Weekly Slaughter – At the end of the week, cattle slaughter was 508,000 head, down 113,000 on the week and down 27,000 for the year. Hog slaughter was 2.233 million head, down 187,000 from the previous week and up 49,000 on the year. Year-to-date cattle slaughter is down 4.2%, while hog slaughter is up 2.1%.
Restaurant Performance Index – The November 2023 restaurant performance index increased to 100.1, an increase of 0.4% relative to the previous month. A 4.6% increase in same-store sales propelled the current situation index to higher by 0.6% relative to October.
