PRIORITY Q&A

John B.

Between all the different versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles you have watched/ read what are your favorite versions of each Turtle.

AfroLuffyX

The Preview pages for Sonic’s 30 anniversary comic seem to not have speech bubbles and dialogue, will the comic have The characters be silent or The dialogue and speech bubbles weren’t added in yet?

AWF

I recently saw a short video from the late Stan Lee (link provided for reference) where he goes on a mini vent about fans treating comic characters as if they're some kind of static being with set limits or abilities that have to be written a certain way, i.e. "so and so would beat so and so because reasons", with Stan explaining that characters abilities only matter as far as the writer writes them.

As a writer, how do you feel about this? I've seen folks say you write some characters poorly, or "out of character", to which I've always said "in character is however the current writer decides to write them". What's your take? https://twitter.com/BlueTlouNerd/stat...

Diane W.

What would interactions between Sticks and Cosmo (from Sonic X) be like?

Papadripopolous

Ian, have you considered other writing formats? You're a comic writer, of course. But could we some day possibly see Ian Flynn, novelist?

Minty (KoFi)

Did any of the Diamond Cutters ever see/encounter Infinite during the war? Considering Infinite was also a mercenary, would they have recognized him or even crossed paths with him in the past?

Joestar_SSB (KoFi)

If you were handed the opportunity to completely retcon / rewrite / rework Infinite The Jackal's backstory with little to no restrictions (be it in either game or comic format) what would you change, and what of his character would you like to further explore?

Happytimes (KoFi)

Rouge's greediness pre-reboot Archie sometimes seemed more malicious...Was this intentional?

Creative Name (KoFi)

The story I've always heard about you getting brought onto Archie is that you kept sending them unsolicited scripts until Penders left, and when he left, they brought you on as head writer to replace him.

ian, giving you a chance to make some dev out there giddy. obviously you're working with rivals of aether, but is there some other indie game you've seen around you'd go "ay I'd write a comic of that" about?

Scruffymatt

Alright fellas, you've had your practice questions. But now before the movie comes out, I once again must ask you: who would win? Gimme those predictions!

Diane W.

Here’s a fun question to make up for my last one; would Shadow be unable to steal candy from a baby if he finds it too cute?

Scurvy Piratehog

So...We know that Sonic Can't lose. So that begs the question...who would win in a fight between Sonic....and Sonic? Note. There's no fake sonic here, they are both real Sonics!

Drewmaru

Since Sega doesn't want to acknowledge certain Classic elements in Modern Sonic, especially those that we will be seeing in the new IDW classic comic such as Mighty and Ray, can you give us a story reason why we don't see them? I'd hate to imagine they'd be dead or nonexistent, and not being the focus seems strange in some instances like the Metal Virus where it brought in so many characters. Are we to assume they were holding out somewhere, or perhaps they were victims of the virus?

Noodalou

So the Chaos Emeralds are the main Super-Saiyan making gems. There have been other mostly collectable powerful sets, such as the Sol Emeralds, Time Stones, World Rings, Anarchy Beryl, Power Rings, etc. What are your favorites in this B-list category? Any least favorites?

John B.

With Dr. Starline playing a significant roll in both Bad Guys and Chao Races and Badnik Bases did anything have to changed in Bad guys to keep in step with the main book? You have talked about collaborating with Evan before but now that her first big story is out I was wondering if you have more specific examples.

Sony N.

First of all love the show and comics. And I loved the metal virus arc. Simple question. Sonic as there a limit to how dark you went with it? I remember you saying you got away with a lot and the tone I feel was great. Did it feel darker then what you normal write for sonic books even Archie and...

As it seems SEGA is constantly changing things up a bit with their characters for the Sonic franchise, what is the word on our boy Knuckles? Is he the last of his kind, the last of his clan, or something else now? On top of that, is he still a treasure hunter?

Hey is it possible for you guys to say, "We want to give a shoutout to Ogilvie the Blue the one and only true Sonic Imposter" ? That would be awesome man!

Digamma

Let's take a question I've asked you in the past and ƎϨЯƎVƎЯ it: Would there be any sonic characters (games, archie, idw, etc) that would be like "if they were in Drogune they'd be Orkune"? Obviously this whole excercise is for fun, not to be taken the most seriously, but I do find it a neat thought experiment.

Diane W.

Since you’re never going to release Lost Hedgehog Tales due to outside forces and instead being using for ideas for the IDW book, I may as well ask[...]

Scruffymatt

Alright fellas, since you agreed on my last "who would win" question so easily, let's try another: Bane vs Mr. Freeze. Who wins?

AWF

What process do you use for thinking ahead when it comes to writing, when youret taking turns writing with someone else? With you and Evan both working on your own arcs for the main comic now, do y'all have to pass ideas back and forth, to make sure neither of you "accidentally" plot-block the other by writing a situation that would interfere with something the other planned on writing?

Over at Sonic Legacy (haha plug), we have several writers working on multiple issues at any given time, so there's always the "issue" of making sure everyone's on the same page. Do you and Evan (and anyone else you've ever written with) ever had to just sit down and be like "ok, this is what I want to do, this is what you want to do, how do we make this work?"

Ideria

Do you Ian, as a comic writer (whether it be Sonic IDW, Sonic Archie or Drogune) get to take part when it comes to translating a comic from english to another language?

Andrew D.

Where can I read all of Drogune so far in its intended reading order?

Scurvy Piratehog

Who would win in a fight between Espio the chameleon....and the Shredder?

N'Oni

Is there any Tailoring Commission that Honey the Cat wouldn't take?

So, Ian, seems you've altered the BKC site to finally mention the Dark Horse ARMS comic as a cancelled project. Most Webtoons comics are formatted vertically for mobile... I was curious if [formatting Dorgune differently] was something that had crossed your minds.

Do you still think there should be a Sonic game, with Smith voicing Sonic, where he’s put into a situation where the metaphorical anvil gets dropped on how he’s characterized in the 2010s era, how he treats his friends, or how he tells his jokes, very poorly, or even the other characters and how they’ve acted since the 2010s such as Tails, or Shadow?

Has SEGA ever told you what games were or were not canon? And for those that were non canon, did they say they could not be adapted at all due to being non canon?

Scurvy Piratehog

Since we never got to fully see it in World's unite...how would you imagine a proper crossover between modern Sonic and Sonic Boom to go? The Sonics interacting, Knuckles, Eggmen, ETC ETC ETC.

IanWaffles

How do you both feel about the hyper critical approach to media analysis we seem to find ourselves in nowadays? I often find I enjoy things more when I consider the time, circumstances, and people behind a project rather than treating everything in a vacuum. Do you think it creates healthy discourse for everything to be treated to such a strict and harsh standard of quality?

Digamma-F-Wau

Chronologically, when does Outlaw take place in relation to the main Drogune series? Given that the shonen jump contest chapter took place at Ruby Point and then the chapter of the main book that came out after Outlaw when the hiatus ended also took place at Ruby Point, it would be funny if what we have of Outlaw and that chapter of the main series was taking place at the same time unbeknownst to both parties, but obviously if that's not the case then that's not the case.

Johnny_B_Goode

Could you shed some light on the relationship between Rob O' the Hedge and the Albion echidnas? Rob appeared to be in a weird trance when he led Knuckles and the lost echidnas to the hidden city he never saw before, and then they were in some sort of alliance with the Albionites until their civilization was blown up by Eggman? What was up with that?

Diane W.

What are the possibilities of exploring Blaze having Iblis sealed inside of her before she Chaos Controlled herself into another dimension at the end of Silver’s campaign in Sonic ‘06, as well as the fact that Blaze was originally from Sonic’s world 200 years into the future and childhood friends with Silver before she was the princess of the Sol Dimension and keeper of the Sol Emeralds?
