In this episode, since most podcasts “podfade” by episode 7 (and since this is #7 if you count our trailer episode) we honor the podcasts that helped us get started, from the friendly podcasters who offered advice to those who offered air time. A big shout out is due to Carolyn Kiel of Beyond 6 Seconds, Anne Marie Cannon of Armchair Historians and Mathew Passy of Causepods (links to each show are below this intro).
This episode is special in another way. I explore the difficulties experienced by those diagnosed with rare diseases as I interview my father-in-law, Robert Bellizzi. Bob is the Executive Director and Founder of The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation. He started this not-for-profit organization back in 1998 as a grass-roots patient to patient online support group called Fuchs’ Friends. This platform provides resources that did not exist, trailblazing a platform that enabled patients to support one another. Fuchs’ Friends and The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation now serves patients in over 150 countries and has a current membership of approximately 3000.

In this episode we invite you to “Keep Rolling” with DeAndre Wilson, a serial entrepreneur and activist from Southern Indiana who became notorious for rolling a 230 pound tractor tire around town to increase awareness around the struggles of those with cancer and to help raise funds to support them financially. You’ll hear the story of how his father once rolled that very same tractor tire around town with the simple message “cancer sucks” before he passed. Now DeAndre has picked up that mantle to “Keep Rolling”. Together, we discuss the importance of Access with a capital A, to resources within communities so members of the community can truly thrive together.
DeAndre's most recent endeavor and community collaboration is the Bedford Collab Project that gathers members of the community through culture, cuisine, and conversation. By the end of this episode, you’ll gain an understanding of why he has earned the title of “manifestation coach” as he has inspired so many others to see a new world of possibility, even in the face of immense challenges.
DeAndre invites you to connect with him and the Keep Rolling Campaign directly on social media (links provided below) -- and you can even reach out via Instagram for a copy of the book he co-authored, Mindshift 2020.

In this episode we dig into the concept of paying it forward. You’ll hear the story of Henry Darby, a high school principal in South Carolina, who took a part-time graveyard shift at Walmart, so he could pay his salary forward to students in need.
We bring home the pay-it-forward concept as we tell the sweet story of The Giving Cake, a cupcake company that donates 100% of their profits to community charities. Violet Anna Lieby describes how decorating cakes moved quickly from hobby to passion project and became a business in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, launching in December 2020. The Giving Cake now delivers beautiful floral cupcake bouquets direct-to-consumers all over Santa Cruz County. Their customers even get to choose which charity their purchase will benefit every time they place an order. You’ll discover how to vote with your dollars and your time.

In this interview, you meet Genevieve Smith, an expert in social and organizational change, values alignment and data for social good who is also affectionately known by colleagues and work friends as a “professional bummer”. You’ll learn how and why she has earned that title as we talk about managing difficult conversations about polarizing topics, and how “nothing is neutral”.
You’re invited into a vibrant conversation about values alignment, and how to navigate conversations with anyone in a personal or professional light, from your racist uncle to your boss, about issues as complex and deep as racial equality, religion or gender issues.
We talk about how “woke shaming” is not a path that serves anyone, and how humor can open people to listen, get over themselves, and connect, even when we don’t agree. We have more in common than we often think, and this episode is a reminder that while “nothing is neutral” we have more common ground than we often think.

In this interview, we meet Kayra Martinez, the founder of Love Without Borders For Refugees In Need. You’ll hear how ONE woman harnessed her desire to help refugees in need to form a not-for-profit that has since helped thousands of refugees living in camps in Greece. Kayra learned by apparent accident when she supplied crayons and paper to kids living in the refugee camps. She discovered that kids who had stopped speaking were able to connect once again -- and that adults were able to move through some of their grief and start to heal. She formed this non-governmental, volunteer-based 501(c)(3) organization so she could fund their creations, support their livelihood, and help them get a fresh start.
Each person she serves receives art supplies and training with artist-led workshops so they can learn to express themselves through art. You can browse her Etsy shop (link below) and choose a piece of their art for yourself or as a gift! 100% of the proceeds go back to the artist to help them get on their feet again. Her work has positively impacted thousands of displaced refugees. She has even begun to help find housing for them while fundraising to support their education so they can gain new skills and build a brighter future in a new land. Her organization has also launched a fundraiser via GoFundMe: The Wahid Wahid project, which provides long-term accommodations and retraining support to help refugees build a brighter future.
