We discuss the issue of recantation, and why that is an understandable, and even expected part of the process. We hope the insight Carrie brings allows our listeners to understand the horrible position a victim is put in when they choose to disclose their abuse.

This week we welcome retired ICAC detective Moe McClanahan to the show. Moe shares with us a case study, and talks about her work protecting children as a detective, and now, as the Director of Training and Education for the Safe Surfin' Foundation. Moe details the case for us in her own words:

" This case is an undercover chat case that started inside of a kids chatroom. I entered as a Mother attempting to locate a guy who was harassing my daughter. I was approached by “PreacherGuy” who was 36 years old and claimed to be in the chatroom to help kids with any issues that they are having at home. We began chatting and talking more about my daughter and eventually I introduced him to her and gave him her KIK username.  I told him that I was interested in finding her a “Daddy” and that I was being picky. He stated that he was interested in talking with her.  PreacherGuy stated that he was a youth pastor in Richmond VA and that his name was Eric. For over a month and a half he friended me as the daughter and we would talk about running away and being together. He sent several (clean) pictures of himself at home, in the shower, at work, in the car.  Then he would start sending pictures of the outline of his penis inside of his clothes. He would ask for pictures, but I told him that my camera was broke and that Mom was trying to get money to get me a new one. He only had one undercover photo of me. I finally sent him a picture of me inside of the PD bathroom.  I placed take on the camera to make it look broken and all you could see was the thin strap from my tank top on my shoulder, part of my bangs and my eyebrow.  After that and a quick phone call (as I snuck my friend’s mom’s phone in the closet during a sleepover) with a few giggles he started offending.  He had told “Mom” that his church group even traveled to Roanoke and that he was wishing he could meet us both.  Eric finally started offending by talking sexual with me as the daughter, telling me how to play with myself, both through text and over the phone while I was “at school” and he masturbated over Skype in the Church office.  I was able to identify an IP address from the Skype call to the Church and it matched IP addresses from the KIK return.
