"The most unfortunate of the popes", the Sack of Rome, the Split with England, and a waffling indecisive Pope. In this episode of Habemus Papam, Fr. Conrad Murphy discusses the papacy of Pope Clement VII, born Giulio de'Medici on May 26, 1478. Pope Clement VII succeeded Adrian VI, who you can listen about here.

Giulio de'Medici's birth had tragic circumstances. One month after his birth, his father, Giuliano de Medici, died in the Florence Cathedral by a murderer from enemies of the Medici family. This event is known as "The Pazzi Conspiracy". Giulio received an education from Lorenzo the Magnificent, his uncle, along side his cousin, the future Pope Leo X.

In March 1513, Giulio's cousin became Pope Leo X and he named Giulio Archbishop of Florence. Cardinal Giulio commissioned Raphel's Transfiguration in 1520.

Adrian VI succeeded Leo X and Adrian VI died on September 15, 1523. The papal conclave elected Cardinal Giulio and he took the name Pope Clement VII. During Pope Clement VII papacy, King Henry VIII of England sought an annulment for his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Clement VII refused. Henry persuaded Clement to appoint Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury. Cranmer did not agree with the oath to papal allegiance, and so, after he was appointed, he granted the annulment. Pope Clement VII excommunicated Henry and Cranmer.

On December 10, 1533, Clement VII returned to Rome from a trip and complained of stomach problems and had a fever. Days before his death, he told Michelangelo to paint The Last Judgment above the altar in the Sistine Chapel. Clement VII died on September 25, 1534. His successor was Pope Paul III.

The last non-Italian Pope until St John Paul II and the only Dutch Pope, a strict and pious reformer. Pope Adrian VI succeeded Pope Leo X who died December 1, 1521. To learn about Pope Leo X, click here. To view all the Catholic Link podcasts, click here.

Adrian VI, named Adriaan Florensz Boeyens and born on March 2, 1459, came from a Dutch family. He is the last non-Italian pope until Polish John Paul II, 455 years later, and he is the only Dutchman to become Pope. His family had modest circumstances and he had three older brothers. His father was a carpenter and died when Adrian was 10 years old.

Adrian was a gifted scholar. He studied philosophy, theology, and Canon Law at the University of Leuven. In 1488, the Faculty of Arts chose Adrian to be their representative on the Council of the University.

The future Pope Adrian VI received the Sacrament of Holy Orders on June 30, 1490. He became a Doctor of Theology in 1491 and became the vice-chancellor of the university in 1493.

In November 1506, Margaret of Austria chose Adrian as her advisor and he became a tutor to Emperor Maximilian I's seven-year-old grandson, Margaret's nephew who became Emperor Charles V. In 1515, as Charles's advisor, Charles sent Adrian to Spain on diplomatic matters.

On July 1, 1517, Pope Leo X named Adrian a Cardinal Priest of the Basilica of Saints John and Paul on Coelian Hill.

Pope Leo X died on December 1, 1521 and a conclave commenced. The Conclave favored Cardinal Giulio de'Medici, but the conclave fell in deadlock, divided between Spanish and French Cardinals. The Conclave elected the absent Cardinal Adrian as a compromise on January 9, 1522. They coronated Pope Adrian VI on August 21, 1522 at St. Peter's Basilica at the age of 63.

Pope Adrian VI focused on reform, but the Cardinals hampered some of his efforts. He also focused on the Turks who advanced towards Europe. As with Leo X, Adrian did not fully understand the severity of the Lutheran revolt.

Pope Adrian VI died in Rome on September 14, 1523 and buried in Santa Maria dell'Anima. Pope Clement VII succeeded Pope Adrian VI.

"Since God has given us the papacy, let us enjoy it." Oh and a guy named Martin Luther and the Protestant Revolution. In this episode of Habemus Papam, Fr. Conrad Murphy discusses the busy papacy of Pope Leo X.

Born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici on December 11, 1475 into the prominent political and banking family, the Medicis of Florence. Pope Innocent VIII, a relative, named Giovanni cardinal of Santa Maria in Domnica on March 8, 1488 at only 13 years old. Late, the Sacred College of Cardinals admitted him into the College of Cardinals on March 23, 1492.

After Piero de' Medici died in 1503, Giovanni became head of the Medici family, the same year Julius the II became pope. Julius II sent Giovanni as the papal legate to venture against the French. The French captured Giovanni.

On March 9, 1513, Giovanni became pope. He was the last pope elected who was not already a priest. On March 15, 1513, Giovanni received Holy Orders and became a bishop on March 17, 1513. Finally, the Church crowned the Pope on March 19th at 37 years old. Pope Leo X engaged in war and politics, which distracted him from the theological disputes that emerged in Germany.

In Germany, Martin Luther wrote is Ninety-five Theses about his concerns on the misconduct of indulgences in 1517. This pamphlet spread Luther's theses throughout Germany and Europe. War and politics distracted Pope Leo X and he did not comprehend Luther's impact. Pope Leo's response Exsurge Domine, in 1520 came too late. Later, Pope Leo exommunicated Luther by the bull Decet Romanum Pontificem on January 3, 1521.

On December 1, 1521, Pope Leo X caught bronchopneumonia and died. He died so suddenly that last rites could not be administered. They buried him in Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Pope Adrian VI succeeded him.

A powerful and ambitious pope, the builder of the new St. Peter's and convoker of the 18th Ecumenical Council, Lateran V. Listen to this episode of Habemus Papam about Julius II, narrated by Fr. Conrad Murphy, a Catholic-Link Podcast. Born, Giuliano della Rovere on December 5, 1443 near Savona in the Republic of Genoa. He came from the House of della Rovere, a noble, but impoverished family. Giuliano's uncle, Fr. Francesco della Rovere, OFM, educated him. Fr. Francesco later became Pope Sixtus IV on August 10, 1471 and he appointed Giuliano as Bishop of Carpentras.

Later on January 31, 1483, then Cardinal della Rovere, became suburbicarian Bishop of Ostia, who had the privilege to consecrate an elected pope a bishop. This happened when Cardinal della Rovere consecrated Pope Pius III a bishop before his coronation. You can learn more about Pope Pius III in our previous episode.

After Pope Pius III died, the College of Cardinals elected della Rovere pope on November 1, 1503. He took the name Julius II. He was one of most powerful and influential popes and central figure of the High Renaissance. During his papacy, he commissioned the paint of the Sistine Chapel, by Michael Angelo, the reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica, and the frescoes of the four large Raphael Rooms, including the School of Athens.

In 1506, Julius II established the Vaticans Museums and organized the Swiss Guards for his personal protection. Having interest in the New World, he established the first bishoprics in Latin America. Machiavelli, author of The Prince, described him as an ideal prince.

Ultimately, on the Vigil of Pentecost, May 1512, Pope Julius became aware that his health declined. He died of a fever in the night on February 20-21, 1513. Pope Leo X succeeded Julius II. Find the tomb of Julius II in St. Peter's Basilica.
