It is one thing to simply say the prayers, but it is more engaging in a relationship with Christ if one activates that contemplative side of prayer. Gregory XIV, born Niccolo Sfondrato, or Sfondrati on February 11, 1535 in Somma Lombardo in the Duchy of Milan. After his mother died when he was three, his father Francesco Sfondrati entered in the ecclesistic state and Pope Paul III created him cardinal-priest in 1544.

Niccolo studied law at Perugia. On March 13, 1560 Pope Pius IV appointed Niccolo Bishop. He participated in the sessions of the Council of Trent.

Pope Urban VII died on September 27, 1590. On December 5, 1590 the papal conclave elected Niccolo pope and he took the name Gregory XIV.

As Pope, he intervened in favour of the Catholic party in the French wars of religion. He also created five cardinals and one was his nephew Paolo Emilio Sfondrati, his secretary of state. The Pope also attempted to convince Philip Neri to become cardinal, but he refused.

He suffered from kidney stones and died on October 16, 1591.

Urban VII, born Giovanni Battista Castagna on August 4, 1521 in Rome to a noble family and is the son of Cosimo Castagna of Genoa and Costanza Ricci Giacobazzi of Rome. He received an education and received a doctorate in civil law at the University of Bologna.

He served as auditor under his uncle, Cardinal Girolamo Veralla and he served as a constitutional lawyer and entered the Roman Curia during the Papacy of Pope Julius III.

After the death of Pope Sixtus V, a conclave formed to elect the successor. The Conclave elected Cardinal Castagna on September 15, 1590 and he chose Urban VII as his pontifical name. As Pope, he threatened anyone who took tobacco inside a church and he expressed charity to the poor.

He died in Rome on September 27, 1590 just before midnight of malaria. He only reigned for 13 days.

In this episode of the Catholic Link podcast, Fr. Rob discusses the little known Church council, the Second Council of Nicaea, which is the seventh ecumenical council in the Church's history. Fr. Rob discusses what this council says about icons of God the Father. This church council affirms the use of icons to depict God the Son, Jesus, God the Holy Spirit, Mary, and the Saints. However, this council, as Fr. Rob explains, warns against the use of images of God the Father because they minimize the significance of the Incarnation and when Jesus says, "those who have seen me, have seen the Father." We see the Father when we see and reflect on Jesus, the eternal Word made flesh. With images of God the Father, the reality of the Incarnation loses its impact. Jesus Christ is the one unique mediator between God and man.

Born Felice Piergentile on December 13, 1521 at Grottammare to Francesco Piergentile, also known as Peretto di Montalto, and Mariana da Fontillo. At twelve years old, Felice entered the Franciscan Order as a novice and her took the name Friar Felix. He began philosophical and theological studies and finished in the Franciscan Magna Domus of Bologna in September 1544.

Pope Pius V made him apostolic vicar of the Franciscan Order and made him a Cardinal in 1570. Gregory XIII died and the College of Cardinals elected Felice on April 24, 1585 and he took the name Pope Sixtus V, in honor of Pope Sixtus IV, also a Franciscan. Pope Sixtus V's mission was reform.

On August 27, 1590, Pope Sixtus V died of malaria.

Have you ever wondered why the calendar adds an extra day every four years? How many days is in a year to be exact? Fr. Conrad discusses the pope who realized that the Julian calendar needed to be fixed because the seasons no longer matched the equinoxes and the solstices.

Born, Ugo Boncompagni to Cristoforo Boncompagni on January 7, 1502 in Bologna. He studied law and later taught jurisprudence and taught some notable figues as Cardinals Alexander Farnese, Reginald Pole, and Charles Borromeo. Pope Pius V died and the conclave chose Cardinal Boncompagni and he took the name Gregory XIII in homage of Pope Gregory the Great, a 6th century pope.

Gregory XIII dedicated himself to implement the Council of Trent. With the papal bull Inter gravissimas of February 24, 1582, the day after October 4th 1582 became October 15th.

On April 5, 1585 the pope suffered from a fever. He appeared well for some time, but on April 10th he stayed in his bed and he received Extreme Unction moments before he died.

In this Catholic Link podcast, Fr. Rob shares his thoughts about adding something new to his podcast and where he found inspiration for his show. In addition to something new, Fr. Rob discusses the state of the priesthood today. His considerations on priests' mental health and the various demands to keep up within a parish. Priests can be responsible for many different things in a parish. A priest is responsible for the spiritual health of the parish and its member as well as the day-to-day operations of the parish including: maintenance, finances, visitors, sacraments, and the list goes on. Fr. Rob encourages listeners to reach out to their priests and get to know them.

Perhaps we can all do a better job inviting them to dinner. Our priests have a lot of responsibilities on their plate and a simple thank you can go a long way. Pius V, born Antonio Ghislieri on January 15, 1504 in the Duchy of Milan, now Bosco Marengo. Antonio entered the Dominican order at the age of 14 and he took the name Michele. He received the sacrament of Holy Orders in 1528 at Genoa.

Pope Pius IV died and Charles Borromeo favored Antonio's election. The Cardinals elected Antonio pope and he took the name Pope Pius V on January 8, 1566.

Pius V attempted to squash the spread of Protestantism and the advance of Turkish armies in the East. He promulgated the canons and decrees of the Council of Trent. He standardized the Holy Bible and promulgated the 1570 edition of the Roman Missal.

On May 1, 1572, the Pope died and suffered from bladder stones. Pope Gregory XIII succeeded him.
