Summary: There's an expression that goes something like, "flattery won't get you anywhere." No truer than with Jesus. Many attempt to flatter Jesus with niceties regarding who He is, been that way for 2000 years. However, in this text Jesus is most concerned with His followers having a true understanding of His nature and His mission and what we do in response to it.
Summary: Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. What a crock. Words hurt and therefore words are important. And no one takes what we say more strongly than God - why? - for words testify to our hearts.
Summary:Our world is loud and busy, we run and chase and go hard, all the time. And this pace of life and activity infiltrates our walk with Jesus. We throw up a couple of songs on a Sunday, say a couple of quick prayers, throw something into the jar and then go and get busy again. Is that what Jesus would have for us? Is that what He wants from us? What Solomon lays out for us in this passage is that many times what God simply wants from us to stop, get quiet and listen and what He offers in return is peace.
Summary: Have you ever laughed at a funeral? Nobody would argue that laughing is a bad thing, it's just not appropriate, most times anyways, at a funeral. There's a right time - even the hard and trying - for everything. That's the theme of chapter three in Solomon's ongoing evaluation of life lived
Summary: In the first part Ecclesiastes 1 Solomon lays out his conclusion of a life lived without God - it's all vanity. But, someone may ask, have you tried boozing it up or sleeping around. How about reading a good book or doing some nice things? Solomon's answer: I've tried them all and I've found them all lacking.
Summary: Is what you're doing going to matter a hundred years from now? In this new series on the book of Ecclesiastes that's the question Solomon, the writer, wrestles with.
