  • but life with the narcissistic parent wasn't ALL bad...sigh

On this episode of the Character Outs podcast we discuss the conundrum of recognizing that life with our narcissistic mom or dad wasn't ALL bad! sigh...

We talk about how to handle the emotions of the occasional warm memory that pops into our minds.

On this no contact journey, we know that these warm memories of our family can pop into our heads when we least expect it. And guess what, it is totally normal.

We also know that when this happens, the next step for us is NOT to pick up the phone and reconcile just because we have a warm memory and may be missing them.

    But what do we do?!

Join me as we talk through it.

  • cheers to a new year

On this episode of the Character Outs podcast we talk about SIX things that we are going to embrace in the new year!

    1. we are no longer going to feel guilty that we walked away from our toxic family.

    2. we are going to lean into every emotion associated with going, being and staying no contact with our toxic family.

    3. we are going to talk to ourselves like we are our best friend! (we can be so mean to ourselves!)

    4. we are not going to entertain conversations with anyone where we feel like we are in a defensive posture because of our choice to stay away from our toxic family.

    5. we are going to lean into self-care because I don't care what our narcissistic mothers told us: it is NOT selfish!

    6. we are going to embrace our true selves. what we like and what we don't like, apart from the influence of our toxic family.

  • interview with the husband

On this episode of the Character Outs podcast, I have a raw and honest conversation with my husband.

I feel like when we are raised in a toxic home, and especially, by a narcissistic mother, we have learned so many toxic ways that we look at life and deal with situations.

Good news is, we have control over these responses. And unlike our narcissistic mothers, the ability to reflect and grow. Who wants to stay stuck in the toxic that we came from, certainly not me.

Our marriage has had its ups and downs and while it does take two to tango, I certainly brought some deep programmed responses that were hindering my personal growth, as well as my relationship with my husband.

My husband will share some ways in which he has learned to navigate and deal with my trauma responses because let's face it....I was simply transposing my pain onto him.

All that to say, we are desperate to be nothing like our toxic families or our narcissistic mothers, and sometimes, it takes those that we love to help us rewire our brains and our hearts. And for me, teach me that not everyone who says they love you...leaves.

In case no one has told you lately, it's not you, never has been and you are not alone.

  • thankful

On this episode of the Character Outs podcast, I talk about...

    Thanksgiving

I revisit my first Thanksgiving after being kicked out of the house by my narcissistic mother.

I discuss how we can navigate the emotions of sadness during this holiday.

But most of all, this episode is brought to you by members of the Instagram community.

I wrote a post asking what YOU are most thankful for since having gone no contact with toxic family and I will read what everyone has shared.

It is so important to focus on the good that surrounds us, instead of grieving the holiday that we thought we should have.

Let's create a new tradition, let's stay focused on the path ahead.

Thank you for all of you who took the time to contribute to this episode, I am so thankful for this community and each and every one of you!
