Chatabix

It’s Joe’s birthday today so he and David celebrate by recording a double bubble episode! Well, it’s not what they’d originally planned but with lots to discuss about turning 51, David insists that they do. Amongst other topics, they chat about the Winter Olympics, Chatabix’s purple patch, getting closer to death, feeling irrelevant, appropriate jobs for old people and starting a birthday card business. Part two coming tomorrow…

Well, it’s the last of our trilogy of episodes discussing David’s recent work trips to London. And it’s turned out to be a right roller coster of emotions as this morning he’s feeling very upbeat about the city and making the most of being there. So much so that yesterday afternoon he took the opportunity to visit his agent, killed time by looking into lots of restaurant windows and almost treated himself to a cocktail in his hotel bar. Then to end the day, he really enjoyed watching Take That's Circus tour in his room - and is now wondering if he and Joe might be able to become their fiends?

In today’s blast front the past, we chat about audio issues, our new theme tune, what the show should be, we read out the listeners tweets, talk about the time Joe was trapped, David's old songs, Joe's wife makes an entrance and the optician calls David.

After yesterday’s recounting of his previous trip, David is swiftly back up in his London hotel room and feeling all discombobulated again. With a very eventful train journey there, including an encounter with a 60 year old weed-smoker, he and Joe are keen to pick up on their conversation about his awkwardness with leaving home and having to spend time in a big city. It’s his London adventures part two! And there’ll be more next week as they ended up chatting about it the next day too.

David’s doing a few days work a week in London at the moment, so he use today’s episode to tell Joe how it’s been going. As it involves leaving his comfort zone (in more ways than one), each week the trip starts off with an anxious train journey from Totness to Paddington station. And his feelings of awkwardness continue throughout the two days, all the way up to the relief-filled train ride home. It turns out that Joe has similar feelings when he stays away for work, so they decide to continue the discussion next time and turn it into a two-parter. Plus, David reads out a few Patreon responses to our ‘Our Little Systems’ idea.

David’s been watching a lot of The 1% Club recently and has noticed how much the show relies on the brilliant quipping from its host, Lee Mack. Knowing Joe’s considerable mastery of impromptu quips, David’s thought of a great game that they can play on today’s pod. That’s if Joe can keep quiet for long enough for David to explain it to him - don’t hold your breath…

In this old show, David and Joe put a bet on a horse and talk about Joe Davis.

This week’s Mailbag show starts off normal enough - but then David reads a confusing quipping email from their Cockfields co-star, Ben Rufus Green. So they get in touch with him to see if he’s up for explaining things and luckily he's free to join them on Zoom straight away. So they get a full explanation of his quip and then do some reminiscing about filming The Cockfields and working with the late, great Bobby Ball.

The other day, Joe found himself stood up in a cafe in London chatting with three other celebrities - which made him feel very self-conscious indeed. So obviously he and David use today’s episode to dissect the whole incident and analyse Joe’s awkward feelings about it. Amongst other revelations, it turns out Joe felt like ‘that Primrose Hill lot in the 90’s’ - who he was a little jealous of at the time. So, plenty there for David to wind Joe up about then.
