Today’s young people get a bad rap about what they are like and what they prefer. We believe that our children and students are our responsibility to stand with and fight for. We are called together to this place to do life together. This is part of belonging. Our children are a blessing from God, and God has called us to sharpen them as arrows to be used to change the world. Belong. Become. Build. These are not just three words. These are our three strategies. Everything we do is filtered through these three words because we believe that this is what God has called us to do. We all have a part in what God is doing here at CMC. In looking to the heart of Isaiah, we can take on this same heart of obedience in saying, “God, here I am; send me.” As a follower of Christ, have you said yes to what it is that He wants you to do, where He wants you to go, and what it may look like? We should always be engaged in what God has called us to do from now until He calls us home. Make yourself available to God to use you. If you will make yourself available, God will begin to shape you. He will begin to mold you, and He will begin to use you to make His name famous. God has called us all to build. He has invited us into His ministry to be builders of the Kingdom of God. If you are a part of the family of God, we have all been called to build the Kingdom of God. No one is left out of this calling. It’s not going to be easy though; it will require us to take steps of faith. While it will be difficult and uncomfortable to be obedient to what God has called us to do, the God who called you is the God who provides and will be with you. Take courage and do not fear because the Lord is going to be with you to do whatever He has called you to do. Get up as a follower of Christ and work to build the Kingdom of God. At Chestnut Mountain, we want every person to belong to God and also we every believer to become a mature disciple of Christ. What does being a disciple mean? What does the process look like of becoming a mature disciple in Christ? We look to the Great Commission that Jesus gave His disciples before ascending back to Heaven. In this, Jesus tells His disciples to make disciples. The process of discipleship is cyclical, and Jesus gives the model of discipleship that’s easy to follow and understand. Our story is to saturate the world with the Good News by making disciples. This is the mission God has called us to you and God wants you to be a part of what He is accomplishing. The strategy that God has given us to accomplish this mission at CMC is to belong, become, and build. In the first part of this new Experience Chestnut Mountain series, we look at the first part of the strategy, belong. We all want to be a part of something worth while. There are two layers to belonging, belonging to God and belonging to the family of God, the church. God’s heart is for each of us to belong to Him and to belong to His family. As Paul concludes his letter to the Philippians, he speaks to them about contentment. No matter how much money or things we have, there will always be the desire to have more, but how can we be content in this Christian life? The secret is that we can have joy-filled contentment because Christ is enough. Contentment starts with peace that only God can provide. Who is influencing you? Who are you following? In Philippians 3:17-21, Paul is telling the Philippians to follow his example of following Christ. As a Christian, you have to follow somebody. There are going to be good examples and bad examples. The bad examples Paul gives are the false teachers that Paul continues to warn the Philippians about. Be careful of who is influencing you. Are the people influencing you teaching you to love the Lord or to love the world? Examine your circle. Examine who you are doing life with. In Philippians 3:12-16, Paul is remind the Philippians that salvation isn’t the finish line, but it is the starting line. As believers, we must work to reflect Christ and the work He has done in us. We aren’t doing works hoping that God will take hold of us but we are doing it in response of taking hold of us. The reason that we work for the Lord is not so that we earn His love but in response to say thank you to Him for loving us. Paul gives an action plan to the Philippians of doing these works as a response, and the plan includes evaluating our current condition, forgetting what lies behind, and to keep reaching forward. In Philippians 3:1-10, Paul is warning them of the false teachers as from a Jewish mindset, they thought that they could earn God’s love and acceptance if they checked all the boxes and did what they were supposed to do. The false teachers are trying to reintroduce the idea that they have to earn God’s love. Paul is warning them not to go back to the bondage that they have been saved from because we are saved by grace through faith not works. God’s love for you has nothing to do with how good or bad you are. It's all about the finished work of Christ that He did on the cross for you. We can't get caught up in the cycle of thinking and making the lists of “God loves me; He loves me not” based on what we do good and bad. We must lay our religious list down and exchange it for this relationship that Jesus offers us. In Philippians 2:19-30, Paul speaks in high regard to the church of Philippi about Timothy and Epaphroditus. Through both of their lives, we see the importance of the local church pouring into people and the faithfulness of their serving for the advancement of the gospel. These were just ordinary men that God used to serve and spread the gospel. Through their humility, faithfulness, and obedience, we see what the heart of a servant should look like. In the same way, we must not let our past distract us from what God has called us to do and instead make ourselves available so that God can use us in the way that He wants to. This is the way the church, the body of believers, is supposed to be.
