At the conclusion of the Old Testament in Malachi 4, God reminds the children of Israel to remember what He has commanded and He reminds them to remain ready for His return. God always provides a path of deliverance for His people to be delivered from sin. Jesus Himself affirms the prophecy of Malachi to be true and He points to the parallel of John the Baptist. In Malachi 4, we see the warning and the promise that God speaks to the children of Israel through Malachi. While we should feel this warning, we also see that our God is still in control and He has called us to share the light. We have been called into a Kingdom that has not been shaken. We serve a God who will not fall apart. Malachi is wanting us to feel the beauty of Jesus coming. This is a prophecy to be fulfilled. We carry the light because Jesus is the light and has called us to carry the light. Where the light is, darkness cannot exist. This is the promise. In Malachi 3, we see that the children of Israel are still oblivious to their disobedience. God desires something from His children. God desires that His children give their best. God wants us to serve and live for Him not because we have to but because we want to in response to what He has already done. The children of Israel are questioning why they should do and give more to God when they see the lost prospering around them in the world. When we hear the word fear, we think that’s how we are supposed to feel about God. That’s not what biblical fear is about. Biblical fear is not being scared but is having a reverence and awe of knowing who is in charged. God didn't call us to isolate either. In Malachi 3, God tells the children of Israel to return to Him and He will return to them. Through Malachi, God tells the children of Israel that they have robbed Him. The children of Israel withholding their offerings from God was showing what was worth more than their deliverance. They were saying that their comfort was worth more than their thank you to God. Their worth was found in their comfort instead of God. We cannot forget that everything we have is from God. God is calling us to give Him our best. God just wants His children to recognize that He is the Provider. This has nothing to do with money but it has everything to do with your heart. He just wants our best. In Malachi 2, we see that the priests began giving less than their best to God so the children of Israel did too. It all started with leadership. One crack of compromise that led to disaster. If you have washed by the blood of the Lamb and trusted Jesus as your Savior, we all have the same responsibility as the priests. In Malachi 1, we see that the children of Israel are focused on the performance and event of following God instead of being focus on the condition of their heart. One of the devil's biggest distractions for a Christian is to make you busy even if it is for church things. The devil loves to make you busy in the Kingdom so that you will be more busy and focused on the what instead of the why. Don't be so focused on what you are doing that you forget why you are doing it. If we forget why we are doing it, then we might as well not do it. Don't give God your leftovers; give Him your best. God has given the children of Israel everything they need to thrive and continue the mission of God. Because of the circumstances of life, all of that excitement had begun to wear off among the children of Israel and have now started going back to some of the same sinful ruts and routines. Malachi’s job is to call them out on what they are doing. The first thing God tells the children of Israel through His prophet, Malachi, is that He has loved the children of Israel. God is saying “I have loved you, I do love you, and will continue to love you.” Despite your sin, God has loved you, does love you, and will continue to love you. The Father is full of grace, mercy, and forgiveness. No matter how bad the world gets, we win. That’s our hope. That’s our promise. Don’t forget that. God loves you.
