Today we’re profiling goaltender Dominik Hasek — arguably the greatest goaltender in NHL history. Drafted 199th overall by Chicago in 1983, Hasek spent just two seasons with the Blackhawks, but it marked the beginning of a legendary career for “The Dominator.” His .922 save percentage ranks first all-time among NHL goaltenders with at least 100 appearances.

Nicknamed “The Grim Reaper”, Stu Grimson wasn’t on the ice to score goals. Grimson was 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 240 pounds, and fighting was his specialty. He played 3 of his 14 NHL seasons with the Hawks from 1990-1993. He averaged just over 200 penalty minutes per season in Chicago. He left the Hawks after being selected by the then, Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1993 expansion draft. He wound up playing for 8 different teams racking up over 2,000 penalty minutes during his NHL career.
WGN Radio’s Charlie Roumeliotis and Jack Heinrich return to Blackhawks Live presented by Circa Sports Illinois. They break down the biggest storylines from training camp, share their first impressions of new head coach Jeff Blashill and his demanding conditioning drills, and evaluate Connor Bedard’s offseason program and contract talks.
The show wraps with a look at captain Nick Foligno’s leadership and why he felt it was important to host seven of the young players at his home in Sudbury over the summer.

Eddie Olczyk has done it all in the NHL and it all started in his hometown. The Blackhawks made Olczyk the #3 overall pick in 1984. That year, he would score a goal in his first game against Detroit at Chicago Stadium. Olczyk went on to play for 5 other teams before ending his career as a Blackhawk. He was broadcasting for the Pittsburgh Penguins before taking over as their head coach, then returning to team up on TV with legendary broadcasters Pat Foley with the Hawks, and Doc Emerick nationally. But his biggest win was beating colon cancer, and inspiring countless others, to get checked.

Vocalist and announcer Wayne Messmer has performed the National Anthem at different venues all over town with his booming baritone voice, but one performance stands out: The 1991 NHL All Star Game at Chicago Stadium. With Operation Desert Storm underway, emotions were running high as Messmer delivered stirring renditions of “O’ Canada” and “The Star Spangled Banner” while the fans stood and cheered, many waving the Stars and Stripes.

Two goals, 17 seconds. That was all it took for the Hawks to clinch their second Stanley Cup in four years. It was Bryan Bickell a massive presence on the ice, scoring the first goal of that sequence and his ninth of the 2013 playoffs. Bickell was known for his tough physical play. He was traded away in 2016. His career was cut short after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Bickell signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the Blackhawks to retire with the team in 2017.

Today we’re profiling Marian Hossa, who quickly became a fan favorite in Chicago. He signed a 12-year deal with the Blackhawks on July 1, 2009, and was a key part of three Stanley Cup runs. Known as “Big Hoss,” he’s forever etched in Blackhawks history, with his No. 81 retired on November 20, 2022.

We previously covered Connor Murphy. Next up:

His name wasn’t the easiest to spell, but his on-ice persona was hard to miss. Dustin Byfuglien, “Big Buff”, brought a physical presence to the 2010 Stanley cup champs as well as a scoring touch, shifting from defense to forward. His 11 goals in the playoffs tied Patrick Sharp for the team lead, and he scored the first goal in the Blackhawks’ Cup-clinching win over the Flyers. It would be his last goal for the Hawks, who traded him to Atlanta two weeks later.

Connor Murphy has been a steady presence on the Blackhawks Blue Line over the last 8 seasons. Acquired in a trade from the then-Arizona Coyotes in 2017, Murphy has skated in 487 games in a Blackhawks sweater and has provided great leadership on and off the ice. Recently helping a lot of the Blackhawks defensive prospects with their transition to the NHL, he has donned the “A” on sweater as an alternate captain for the Blackhawks the past 5 seasons.
