Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. — Matthew 25:13

Jesus intentionally withholds the date of His return so that His people remain watchful, not idle. The Day of the Lord will arrive like a thief, but believers are children of the light who can stand before the Son of Man. Since that day comes suddenly, vigilance and prayer guard the heart from the world's drowsy weight.

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure. — Psalm 16:5

David declares the Lord is his portion—his inheritance, his cup, his all. Like the Levites who received no land, believers receive God Himself as their inheritance. Since God is your portion, you cannot lose Him, even when everything else is stripped away. This truth calls you to find your security and sufficiency in Christ alone.

This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed for travel, with your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. You are to eat in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover. — Exodus 12:11

Earthly stability is a temporary illusion, not a final destination. The believer's true home is the city God is building, the Sabbath rest that remains for His people. Spiritual maturity means living with loosened grip on present attachments and a fixed gaze on the grace that will appear when Christ is revealed.

“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”). — Matthew 1:23

The incarnation is God's great condescension: the infinite Creator, whom the highest heavens cannot contain, took on human flesh in Christ. In Jesus, God's glory is revealed in grace and truth, making the invisible God knowable and approachable. The transcendent God has drawn near, so that through faith in Christ we can dwell with Him now and forever.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, — Galatians 5:22

The virtues we are commanded to display are not produced by human effort but by the Spirit's work within us. Because God has revealed Himself as slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, His Spirit grows that same character in His people. The ground of our forgiveness is Christ's cross, so our patience and kindness toward others respond to what God has already done for us.

And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. — 1 John 2:28

This is a tender command from an old apostle who knew what it was to stumble. Abiding is not gritting your teeth and trying harder; it is staying connected to the vine. The one who wavers like a wave of the sea has not learned to rest in Christ's finished work. All the promises of God are Yes in Him, so your standing does not depend on your grip but on His.

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” — Genesis 32:28

True persistence in prayer is not a mechanism for human control but a posture of total dependence upon the divine character. By clinging to the promises of God, the believer experiences a transformation of identity that aligns the human will with the sovereign purpose of the Creator. This holy struggle serves to refine the heart, ensuring that the focus remains on the faithfulness of the One who initiates the encounter.

I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.” — John 11:42

Jesus stood at Lazarus's tomb and thanked the Father that He is always heard. That is the confidence of the Son, and by union with Christ, that same hearing reaches us. Because Jesus lives to intercede, and because we ask according to His will, the Father's ear is open to His children. Not because we are worthy, but because we come in the name of the One who was always heard.

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience. — Hebrews 4:11

Here is a paradox the world cannot understand: work to rest. The rest of God is not laziness—it is the Sabbath rest of the soul that has ceased from its own works, just as God did from His. We strive to enter through the narrow gate, not because it is hard to be saved, but because we are fighting against our own unbelief. The labor is believing; the rest is Christ.

I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. — Psalm 55:6

We all know the urge to flee, to find any way out of crushing sorrow. Yet the Man of Sorrows did not escape; He entered our pain fully and became our merciful high priest. Because He suffered with us, He can deliver His righteous ones from every affliction. We find rest by trusting the Christ who has overcome the world.
