At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked. — Mark 2:8

They were doubting His authority to forgive sins. We do the same, don’t we? We calculate whether God can really do what He’s promised. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (Matt. 28:18).

When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did, — Genesis 39:3

Joseph was a slave in Potiphar's house, yet the Lord made everything he did prosper. His circumstances said "slave," but God's blessing said "Son." It's the same promise Jesus gave: seek first the kingdom, and everything else is added. God can cause a man to prosper in a prison cell if He chooses. Your circumstances don't limit His ability to bless.

Consider my affliction and trouble, and take away all my sins. — Psalm 25:18

He knew the weight of guilt, and he knew where forgiveness is found. God doesn’t just cover sin; He blots it out for His own sake. The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, and He exercised that at the cross.

Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray at all times and not lose heart: — Luke 18:1

Jesus told His disciples they should always pray and not lose heart. He didn't say this because prayer is a duty to check off; prayer is how you stay alive. The persistent widow kept coming until the unjust judge gave in — how much more will your Father hear you? Jacob wrestled until daybreak and wouldn't let go. That's the kind of praying that doesn't quit.

by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, — Hebrews 10:20

Since Adam, the way to God was blocked by a flaming sword. But Christ opened a new and living way through the veil of His flesh. When Jesus died, the temple curtain tore from top to bottom. The way that was closed is open. Jesus is the way, and unlike the old covenant path, this one leads to life because He's alive.

The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17

Zephaniah gives us one of the most tender pictures of God: He will rest in His love over you. God doesn't love you anxiously the way we love each other. He rests. He delights. He rejoices over you with singing.

For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust. — Psalm 103:14

Your Father knows you're dust. He made you from the ground, and He hasn't forgotten what you're made of. When you're weak, when you fail, when you can't take another step — He knows. And He deals with you not as your sins deserve but with the compassion of a Father for his children. He remembers your frame so you don't have to pretend you're anything else.

So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” — Luke 17:10

That’s not false humility—it’s the simple truth. Even our best obedience is what we owe, and apart from grace we’d have nothing to offer. Paul said he worked harder than all, but added, “yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me” (1 Cor. 15:10).

The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. — Romans 13:12

The night is far spent, the day is at hand — put on the armor of light. What's the armor? Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's it. You don't arm yourself with resolutions and self-improvement; you clothe yourself with Christ, counting everything else as rubbish. Walk as children of light, because the One who is light has already won.

The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.” — Haggai 2:9

Haggai promised the rebuilt temple's glory would surpass Solomon's. On the surface that seemed impossible — the second temple was smaller, poorer. But the greater glory wasn't gold or cedar; it was the Lord Himself walking into that temple. Jesus is the true temple, and in Him God gives peace, not just for Jerusalem but for the whole world.
