As we turn our attention to the defensive side of the football where Arizona State Sun Devils football was a pleasant surprise in 2023. Defensive coordinator Brian Ward had his players playing every down at a high level and has us thinking the best is yet to come. Although there have been some key departures from the program, the unit has a slew of guys returning who could make major contributions in 2024. The duo of edge rushers Prince Dorbah and Clayton Smith could yield a remarkable pass rush for the Sun Devils after the two combined for 10.5 sacks a season ago. They'll be aided by defensive tackle C.J. Fite, who was one of the most productive freshmen for Arizona State a year ago. The secondary will have some key returners as well, such as Shamari Simmons at safety and Ed Woods at cornerback. Between these five and some other returners, the Sun Devils' defense can hopefully match what they did last season.
