— Transcript — What’s up everybody? This is Karim Amri. And welcome back to the Coaching Secrets podcast.
I’ve attended the first coaching training over 5 years, ago, and I was amazed about this powerful, life and business changing concept.
I remember I’ve conducted 1 or 2 practice sessions during the training, and get a certificate as Professional Coach, it was strange, the feeling I’ve felt the first day after the training, I’ve said to myself: “does this thing really works “?
In fact, I’ve almost forgotten everything I’ve been taught the previous 5 days, and kept for weeks asking myself that question.
While my wife reminding me : “Karim, we’ve paid x amount of time and money for that, It must work”. I’ve used my influence to convince someone that I can help him change his life with coaching, that I told him I master it, and started conducting a series of sessions, it was funny at that time, how in a coaching relationship, while everyone believes in the process, the coach is not.
Coming from numbers, drawings, and MEP background it was still challenging for me to accept that we can change things just by talking.
As I decided already to quit my job, and start a career in personal Development and coaching, I had no option other than looking for another advanced coaching training to enrol in it, and so it was, I’ve attended my second coaching training, with a goal to find answers to all my questions:
How does this thing work?
How can we measure its efficiency?
How can we build a business around it?
Unfortunately, despite the fact that skill wise the training was good, I couldn’t get a satisfying answer to any of my questions, in fact it was not about the training or trainer quality, but everything was set in a way not to cover this part.
Years later I discovered that great coaching training content are available, for less than $100 on the web.
It was hard, to accept that after spending thousands of dollars, and days of training, I’m still not able to answer my 3 basic questions.
As I was determined to find a way to make it work, so I looked for bigger names, and bigger schools. I’ve said to myself, “these are the guys who will answer my questions”.
And again the same thing happened, with a slight difference, the cost was bigger and the certificate more valuable, but the poor trained Coach is still not sure how to get this thing to work and how to build a business around it.
I started shifting my focus towards training, until one day, I was listening to an audio-book while “Ubering”, taking home a Walmart employee, and the voice, reading the book, said this sentence:
“You are good enough the way you are now, If your client went daily to speak to the streetlight and shares his issues, he will feel better after a week of doing so, and I think you’re not lighting like a streetlight, but you can at least share a smile and interact with your client”.
It was like a lightening that hit my head that night. I’ve dropped off the customer at home, put myself off-line and headed home to digest that and avoid losing the insight I’ve got.
In fact, I discovered that day, that most of what I needed to build my career as a coach, is not covered by the Coaching programs themselves, but by others in different books and programs, whether about leadership, marketing, organizational behavior or business building and others.
So, I’ve shifted my focus from coaching books and coaching courses to anything else but coaching.
Some weeks later I’ve got my first contract for $6000
