Why People Die by Suicide
It's Not About the NailSteps you can take when someone is talking about suicide:
Help them feel supported and heard
Create a comfortable space to talk about it
Phrases you can say "I want to check in", "I care about you", "I want to make sure you’re safe", "Have you thought about hurting or killing yourself?"
Show up and listen
Don’t talk over them
Don’t give them advice
Ask yourself and them "Do we need to get 9-8-8 on the line?"
Ask directly and clearly, let them know you care - "How did you get here, what’s led you to feel like this?"It is a myth that if you ask someone if they’re suicidal that you are going to put the idea in their head
They’re overriding their instinctual desire to stay alive
