Eye Roll of the Week

Before we get into the headlines, I’d like to point out that at many times we purposely choose to ignore a lot of the news that’s out there. You can of course see it all on the Coinfeed app, we don’t censor what’s in the app, but we do have a responsibility to curate content with as much skepticism as possible. Part of that skepticism keeps us from reporting what mostly seems like PR instead of actual news. We rather not report anything at all. Even when it’s a slow news day. But sometimes these type of pieces do demand attention simply because those throwing out PR ,or what I like to call Anti-FUD, have been successful in embedding their narrative into the crypto commentary. Instead of blindly reporting it as they want it reported, we will tell it like it is. Even if that means hurting your feelings. So we have certain segments on this show that allow us to do that. There are reports that the White House is looking into tapping XRP to combat against the quote unquote Chinese-dominated Bitcoin. That doesn’t even make sense. If you believe that. I have some Ripple to sell you. C’mon guys. Really?

Winners: Icon roars upwards by over 12% with $31 million dollars of daily volume. XRP step ladders up to 44 cents after jumping up by almost 9%.

Losers: Nebulas sinks by 11% amidst an artificial bump in Bitcoin’s price. Not a good sign for Nebulas.

The Tether and TrueUSD gap remains at five cents. There is some curiosity around why Bitcoin’s price is going up if Tether is imploding. Here’s the bigger picture. Let’s assume those holding Tether are bearish want to stay in a stable coin. We’ll call them the bears. These Bears deem Tether to be risky and would like to move into a different stable coin. The only way to get out of Tether on Bitfinex is to trade it for another coin such as BTC, LTC, or what have you. Bulls holding BTC on Bitfinex however may also feel that Tether is risky. Bulls will charge a premium to take on that risk and also to take profit. Bulls charge that premium by selling Bitcoin over market value, asking for a discount on Tether, or both. This is why you see a discount on tether and am increase in Bitcoin price on Tether-based exchanges. Bears that overpaid for Bitcoin don’t want to stay in Bitcoin. Bears will dump BTC for a stable coin such as True USD. When this happens, the price for BTC will revert to the mean. Worst case scenario, assume that there is a bank run on USDT and Tether cannot pay out. USDT holders would lose all value. In this situation all that potential demand for crypto would be wiped out. Thus, leaving excess supply on the market that will eventually cause a downward pressure on price.

Fidelity launches its institutional grade custody services. The Cryptosphere is excited as they believe it will be a catalyst for large institutions to jump in. We at Coinfeed however, remain skeptical since a flood of institutional money will likely not be a flood at all. Experienced Institutions do not operate on FOMO. The entry into the market will be controlled. Judging by the low volatility in the past few weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised if accumulation has already started.

BitPay Stable Coin Options

Bitcoin flirting around $6300 all weekend. However sometime early this morning it seems there may have been panic to get out of USD Tether and into BTC with a rise to $7700 on Bitfinex and currently trading at a premium by a few hundred dollars.

Winners: Pundi X is up by a modest 4% likely tempered by a bearish Bitcoin sentiment. Last week Zac Cheah, CEO of Pundi X announced that his firm has made the first ever blockchain based phone call. Implications of this feat is we can have decentralized phone calls without relying on centralized carriers. Interesting.

Losers: And of course what goes up, must come down with 0x falling by 5% after its Coinbase bump.

Dr. Doom vs Vitalik Buterin

Last week we reported that Nouriel Roubini testified that crypto was the mother of all scams. Thanks to @infominer for posting a link to a recording of the debate on Coinfeed. Love our Coinfeed members. Over the weekend, the crypto verse heated up with rebuttals against Roubini’s statement prompting many to ask Roubini and Vitalik to debate. While the debate between the two could be interesting, it’s a horrible matchup. Roubini is a genius level economist and business school professor. Vitalik is a genius level computer scientist. I doubt Roubini is going to engage in computer science debates and unfortunately everyone thinks they're an economist. A debate between Nouriel Roubini and Professor Lawrence White or even Arthur Hayes would be much more engaging. One thing I will say is keep an open mind on Roubini. He's not entirely wrong and ignoring him will do you a disservice. Criticism is good.

Winners: Loom continues to bloom rocketing up by 15%. Zero X not too far behind with 14% after Coinbase added it as its first ERC-20 asset to its Pro exchange.

Bitfinex has suspended all fiat wire deposits for one week. As we’ve previously reported, they along with USD Tether have been in limbo seeking out a new bank. Markets like stability however and these circumstances surrounding Bitfinex doesn’t do much for investor confidence.

Dr. Doom

Dr. Nouriel Roubini nicknamed Dr. Doom by the crypto markets testified at a US Senate hearing that “Crypto is the mother of all scams”. Peter Van Valkenburgh, a lobbyist for Coin Center, offered his countering views with examples of how crypto is solving hair on fire problems. The eight US senators present at the hearing just looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders, and asked if they can get a copy of the report on a CD-ROM.

Liquid Network is Live

Not so doom and gloom, Samson Mow has launched Blockstream’s Bitcoin side chain dubbed the Liquid Network. While the Liquid Network works in similar ways as side chains such as Lightening Network, target market for Liquid Network will be large financial institutions that can make off chain transactions with LBTC and later swap them for on-chain BTC.

Non-Fungible Fungibility

Charlie Lee says he is a big fan of Monero. Primarily because it contains two features not available on Bitcoin nor Litecoin. If you guessed privacy and fungibility for those two features, you would be correct. But hold on, I thought Bitcoin is fungible? One satoshi equals one satoshi and one bitcoin will always be one bitcoin. Thus it’s fungible right? (Record scratch then start music from beginning) Not exactly. Every Bitcoin transaction can be tracked on the blockchain. If it is found that a certain wallet contains Bitcoins used in fraudulent schemes or any behavior deemed by governments and organizations to be illicit, they can effectively censor those Bitcoins. The censored Bitcoins would have less value to the market creating classes of different Bitcoin, thus no longer fungible. Coins that get around that censorship with privacy features maintain fungibility.

Neo released its Neo name service yesterday which is sort of like a domain name for your wallet address. The human readable wallet addresses help with creating a better user experience and could see increased adoption for the Neo protocol. Is that my BCH EX?

Roger Ver says he is planning a Bitcoin Cash based exchange. This is probably a good move for Roger as he owns Bitcoin.com, a gateway for many into the world of crypto. The next step for Bitcoin Cash adoption would be to have as many BCH base pair markets as possible. It will be interesting to see if the markets will have any liquidity however. Of course that limitation can easily be masked with wash trading.

Jimmy's World

Jimmy Song recently tweeted that it would be more rational to use credit cards than spend Bitcoin prompting twitter users to poke fun at the cognitive dissonance. Of course unconventional wisdom is often, well unconventional. The notion that Bitcoin is a currency and its utility is only derived from transacting on its network is incomplete. And here’s why. There are several cryptoassets that are much better than Bitcoin as a spendable currency. Arguably, the best use for Bitcoin is as your savings account. You don’t spend money out of your savings account but you use it every day. Even while you and Bitcoin sleep (aww). While still a work in progress, it is the longest running blockchain that has yet to be hacked. Moreover, Bitcoin doesn’t have a central figure like Ethereum does with Vitalik. Even if Vitalik renounced his affiliation from Ethereum, in the way that Charlie Lee sort of stepped away from Litecoin, his reputation will always follow the asset. This is why we at Coinfeed stopped eating Jello.

Coinbase Top 50

This piece of news was first discovered by a member on Coinfeed. It seems Coinbase has been listing pricing data for the Top 50 assets chosen by its network value. XRP holders may hope for a listing since its pricing data and logo is indeed shown on Coinbase’s app and website. Naysayers will argue however that prices are only there for educational purposes and that Coinbase’s digital asset framework still requires assets to be decentralized.

Darwin’s Ether

A major precedent has been made with the Supreme Court in British Columbia ruling that the 530 Ethereum tokens mistakenly sent to an ICO investor must be given back. The court case establishes the Ethereum tokens as property. What’s bizarre in this case however, is that the ICO investor Brian Wall originally refused to give the ETH tokens back. He later said he will comply but then claimed a hacker stole them. And then Brian died.

Tom Lee at it Again

Any news coming from Fund Strat isn’t news. It’s PR. What Tom Lee does is reverse FUD. He wants the market to think institutional investors believe Bitcoin has bottomed. But that’s not the case. Digging into the Coinfeed archives, you’ll find Tom Lee put out a survey that reported 82% of institutional investors believed Bitcoin had bottomed in April. If that number is only 54% now in October, that is a bearish signal my friend. The fact that Tom Lee didn’t report that finding should tell you all you need to know about Tom Lee.

Fortnite players looking to install cheats that will give them an edge are getting scammed out of their bitcoin. Scammers offer links to the cheat in youtube comments as well as other social media platforms. The cheats contain malicious code that hunts down wallet addresses and steals your Bitcoin. The best people to scam are often the ones looking to cheat.

Soulja Boi has a new track titled Bitcoin on his Young Drako album. It’s exactly the type of wack music that grows on you that you will eventually come to love. We love it already. What’s most interesting is it seems Soula Boi is a Bitcoin maximalist but he does hold some Litecoins. An intense analysis of the song reveals that he spent $6000 on bitcoin and made a hundred racks which I’m being told means a hundred thousand. We at Coinfeed prefer bands.
