DARK AT 4:30   -for Benjamin Hayes

here we are

shivering on the surface of the earth

already shattered by indignities
like burst water pipes
and Instagram

and then some fool turns the lights out?

here we are, though

lighting candles
and writing on walls

even laughing occasionally

BISCUIT KING   -for Matt Gifford

he’s got chicken fingers
for fingers

and wears a steaming
ten pound biscuit
on his head

he sneezes gravy

he
has an angry little dachshund
made entirely of butter,
but somehow alive
with a bacon leash
so…
it’s pretty obvious why there’s no biscuit queen

oh, and it’s also the name of a breakfast restaurant in Kentucky

JONI MITCHELL  -for Simon Workman

I wish
I had a river
I could skate away on

me too, Joni

I can feel the ice under my feet

and see the snowy trees
go by

and maybe I’ll
end up in a town I love
far away
and I’ll learn to love myself
the way

I’ve heard
people talk about

The history of "Best of Bread." ALSO: A Republican trying to do a college radio show. PLUS: The REAL election fraud - getting rich by pocketing campaign cash. Song of the week from Buffalo Tom!!

ART SUPPLIES   -for Marcus Fessler

art supplies
new paths forward

new languages,
bridges,

comfort,
shelter, respite, release

art can also
stultify

like
a comedian reinforcing
stereotypes

a band playing
an oligarch’s wedding

or a vase in a bank

make art urgently,
or don’t
make it at all

STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS  -for Benjamin Hayes

the sound of my heart
closing
after too much hope

too many false starts

missed boats

but then the sound of
the announcement itself
reminds me of
those years in New York

when I was up for anything,
ready to die for a feeling

and my heart reopens

I barely make it through the doors
and I rush up to the street

It’s 2am

I can see my breath

and I’m alive again
on 14th Street

Chris predicts the election...WRONG. Chris rants incoherently about skateboarding. ALSO: Antidepressants, and the "Mom & Pop" pharmaceutical company. PLUS: A great new Can Do Cold Brew ad, and a song of the week from The Features!!
