“Locals still calling things what they used to be called
long after they have been renamed or replaced”     -for Ted Frushour

I’m looking forward to the days following
the great correction

when the survivors emerge
from the caves

blinking in the morning dew

and start a small dry cleaning business

SHAG CARPET - for Simon Workman

I can picture little people as small as an ants
walking the little trails in the shadow of the stalks of shag
(in my mind the carpet is dark green)
it’s sometime in the 1970s
but the wee folk who live in the shag
don’t know that

they just think the giant mailman
whose carpet it is
has a tornado siren for an alarm clock

and hope he drops a slice of American cheese every once in a while
so they don’t starve
(he does)

and every time he spills his coffee
there’s a huge flood
and even though their huts are washed away,
incongruously,
the little people dance

they chalk it up to resilience

but it’s the caffeine

BUYING A TINY HOUSE ON AMAZON - for Marci Kelley

I am going to pretend that
you mean

that you want to buy a tiny house on
the Amazon River

because there are some topics too
dark to discuss - even for poets

soooo
the poem is:

don’t make it too tiny
because a hippopotamus
will knock it over

MINERS GOTTA MINE - for Stephanie Dooley

my wife said
that I said this in my sleep
and I didn’t believe her

it made me so mad because
I figured she thought I was
stupid after that
which I secretly feared (that I was stupid)

so I started drinking heavily
and obsessing over that stupid phrase

many years later
after we split
after I got sober
after I found Jesus
I started a bike rental business in the Mojave desert
that was guaranteed to fail

and I got a big tattoo
on my bicep

THE LOCAL LIBRARY - for Marcus Fessler

put on sensible shoes
and stroll through the racks

breathe in the scents:

the banana of poetry

the mildew of politics

the incense of myth

and a pressed flower
in a book
that hasn’t  been opened
since that summer day in 1887

when Kathleen McGregor was so happy

that’s right, you heard me right

the banana of poetry

CRANES AND THEIR OPERATORS - for Sam Armstrong

this job is underestimated

crane operators have more power than
the Pope

the Pope can’t operate a crane

and neither can the money men
at BlackRock

so stop giving all your money to the Democratic Party
take that money and get all the crane operators
on the people’s payroll

see if those fuckers
can build a penthouse without a crane

we only build affordable housing now
us, and our league of benevolent crane operators

John Denver - "Looking For Space": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMyzyPmVSdw

CLOCKING IN/CLOCKING OUT - for Gabriel Aguirre

I have one of those time clocks
at home

and I clock in when I’m writing a poem
and clock out when I’m not

no money in it

no boss

I just like making a fool out of that machine

Sebadoh - "Tree": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwl0-Ad0V4k

NEEDING TIME TO GRIEVE IN THE REDWOODS - for Carol Cash

Redwoods avoid cliches

that’s what I like about them best

words
are meant to label things
and send them along

in times of grief
language can feel like an affront

Redwoods hold out their arms

that’s all
