Biggest Myth about ACT –
ACT is knowledge based –not true

SAT – 3 hours opt. essay reading/writing/math in some form – geometry formulas not on ACT – ESSAY – analytical –given a high quality published piece of work, write an essay based on the given work.
ACT – 3.5 hours – reading – fewer citations – English – both test grammar, style and reading analysis – math basic, math, geometry – trig (no grid in boxes) – persuasive like (40 minutes) the old SAT – science section –don’t need to know anything about science – combo of reading and basic math

What are the thirteen most common grammar errors? What are the patterns and how can you find the correct answers? In this episode of College Prep Genius Podcast the New SAT writing portion and essay are discussed along with tips to ace the test.

Show Notes - Ace The New SAT! All About the Writing and Essay Portion of the Test.

* Each student has about 35 minutes to take this test with 44 questions on it - and about 40 seconds to answer each one.
* Grammar, style and reading comprehension is the focus
* Look for the patterns and each question can be answered in about ten seconds.
* There is a fast way to answer each question - college prep genius teaches how this works
* One section has a multiple choice section with variations of the answer or one that says, "no change"
* Thirteen of the most common grammar errors are tested, words such as affect and effect; as well as access and excess -- understand these types of words and differences in each.

The Essay - optional

Highly recommend you take this portion of the test as it will set you apart from other students since most students will "opt" out of the essay. When colleges have a tie between two students they will look at the essay portion to make their determination. This can help you.

Did you know that every test on the math portion of the SAT test can be answered in thirty seconds or less? Did you know that on one portion you can not use a calculator? Did you know certain calculators are banned? In this podcast Jean Burk shares answers to these questions and more.

Show Notes - SAT Test - All About Math

* New SAT takes 80 minutes - 25 minutes with no calculator and 55 minutes you can use a calculator.
* Approved calculators
* What is the question asking you?
* The test consists of Algebra, Advanced Math, Geometry (less than on the previous version), Scatter plots, Coordinates, Story Problems, Probability, Trig - only a few questions, etc.
* Circle the key element? Set up the problem.
* You CAN write in the booklet - it says so on the front page of the booklet.
* Figures are not drawn to scale - listen to the audio for instructions on how to tackle these problems.
* If you have no figure or chart draw one.
* The SAT is redesigned and has sections of multiple choice with four choices, the idea is to eliminate the incorrect answers. Looking at the questions and trying to find the answer or vice-versa is what students commonly do - the best math test tip is to look at the answer and the question as one entity.
* Minimize calculations to save time --double check by looking at it backwards.
* Know math terminology so you know what the question asks - tangent, product, integer, etc.

You don't have to read every line in the reading section unlike what other SAT programs tell you.

You need to look at the questions in the right order -

* Long passage
* Dual passage

Types of questions on the tests

* vocabulary use
* overall passage
* command of evidence
* chart question

Mistakes students make -

* Read and analyze all passages and begin interpreting and analyzing it - no!
* Don't take the questions literally - yes, on the SAT take the question literally
* Not understanding this is not a content-based test
* Not realizing this is a logic test - important to look for the patterns
* Read the passage and go to find the right answer

Four Hidden Patterns:

C - Completely Irrelevant

O - Obscure or Confusing

A - Adds extra stuff

T - Totally Contradictory
