Combat Chronicles episodes

  • Episode 28: Benn pops / Fury shows his arse / Patricio shows his class / Overeem-Hari III

It's been a while but it was NOT a hiatus: I've simply been busy providing content for my patrons over at the Combat Chronicles Patreon!

Loads to talk about this week but maybe not what you'd hoped for! First, a new British boxing drugs scandal, followed by news that the best heavyweight in the world is likely to take on a fight absolutely no one is asking for. Then, a look at how Patricio Pitbull diffused a quality operator in Adam Borics and how inspite of being a Bellator stalwart the Brazilian is a true modern great. And then, two mainstays of the Dutch and international combat sports scenes (hopefully) settled their differences once and for all as Alistair Overeem fought Badr Hari in a rubber match at GLORY: Collision 4. In terms of kickboxing content be sure to check out www.beyondkick.com an exciting new endeavour that features some great content from some friends of mine: you won't regret it! The site looks gorgeous and the content is awesome!

Hopefully a fun episode and don't worry: it's not every month I'll be making HUGE audio documentaries for the patrons so we should resume something like a regular schedule from here on out or at least in November. You know what you've gotta' do if you're clamouring for more material from yours truly...

  • Episode 27: Canelo cruises past GGG / Cory carves up Yadong

As expected (by me at least) the third fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was a damp squib. What does it mean for both men going forward?

On the undercard, boxing phenom 'Bam' Rodriguez seems to be getting flak for his performance against battle-tested Israel Rodriguez. I look into that and explain why I think that's unfair.

On the MMA front, the big attraction this week was Cory 'Sandman' Sandhagen vs. Song Yadong. It lived up to expectations and tells us a lot about both fighters.

  • Episode 26: UFC 279 / Diaz Army 4 Lyfe

Forgive how depressed I sound through much of this episode, for this was ultimately a depressing card.

  • Episode 25: Who will Fury fight next? / DAZN boxing round-up / Zuluzinho travesty / UFC's first show in France

As you can tell from the show title there's plenty going on in this episode! First I look at the circus that is Tyson Fury's next fight, as well as going over potential opponents and how interesting I think they are. Then I look at the DAZN card this weekend which was headlined by one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, Juan Francisco Estrada.

Then, MMA showed its arse again as poor ol' Zuluzinho was possibly robbed of a win out in Belarus. And then in their first card on French soil, the UFC put on a mixed bag of an event with enough fights worth talking about to round out the show.

  • Episode 24: Usyk shows AJ his level

The big story of the weekend in boxing is covered here, as the Usyk-Joshua rematch ended with a clear winner and all of our questions answered. Also, 'The White Lotus' himself Buakaw made a return to Bangkok Stadium fighting this past week, in a case of completely bizarre matchmaking that is more interesting than the action itself.

You may be wondering why I'm not talking about Leon Edwards' improbable victory over Kamaru Usman, and that is because I AM over at Patreon. Sign up for a bonus podcast covering everything that was interesting at UFC 278 right here

  • Episode 23: Dana gives Bo blue balls / Vera takes out Cruz

The Covid episode. Please bear with me faithful listener, for I feel and sound like shit.

A very quick look at the K-1 GP from this past week is followed up by a dive into the controversy over Bo Nickal's lack of UFC contract offer after a quick and impressive win on last weeks DWCS episode. The main bulk of the episode is devoted to Marlon 'Chito' Vera's coldblooded kayo of former champ Dominick Cruz.

  • Episode 22: The Queens of Mixed Martial Arts

Two big MMA cards this week with UFC 277 from Dallas and RIZIN 37 from the Saitama Super Arena. As Amanda Nunes perhaps approaches the end of her great career, the great run of Japanese prodigy and reigning Combat Chronicles fighter-of-the-year Seika Izawa is only just beginning.

Other fights from these cards are discussed on this podcast and if you want to hear me talk about even more head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon.

  • Episode 21: Is Paddy Pimblett for real?

A couple of weeks off this podcast feed but if you've missed me more content is available over at the Combat Chronicles Patreon

What a weird couple of weeks for MMA! Oh, well, plenty to talk about even if it isn't all that interesting. We start with a quick look back at the Rodriguez-Ortega card before travelling to London for UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Aspinall which was the absolute pits but does at least pose some interesting questions for what the UFC can do to progress Paddy Pimblett, who appears to be a potential star who isn't actually very good at fighting. A conundrum for sure!

  • Episode 20: Volkanovski vs. Holloway III / Adesanya vs. Pereira III?

UFC 276 is in the books and it was an absolute banger. Topics include: Alexander The Great. No quote marks necessary, like Marvelous Marvin Hagler he should just change his name legally at this point. Pereira executes Strickland and Adesanya executes another boring gameplan against Cannonier. Also: how sad and wondrous it is at the same time being a fan of Robbie Lawler in 2022. And more!

  • Episode 19: Takeru U-Turn? / Gamrot robs Tsarukyan? / Is Bam Rodriguez elite?

A mixed bag of kickboxing, boxing and MMA this week. First, a look at Takeru's statement in the wake of his crushing loss to Tenshin Nasukawa. Then, a look at the really good but ultimately depressing fight between Gamrot and Tsarykyan, as well as some choice highlights from the undercard. And then a look at the DAZN boxing card from this weekend that saw Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez and Murodjon Akhmadaliev successfully defend their world titles.
