New York’s Reproductive Health Act declares abortion a human right. This newfangled right will quickly conflict with freedom of religion for pro-life medical professionals and freedom of speech in pro-life pregnancy centers. NY’s right to abortion actually sets the stage to attack those that would protect babies and their mothers from abortion.

It gets worse. As of now there are four (4) more bills either lined up in committee, scheduled for a vote, or already passed awaiting Cuomo’s signature, targeting virtually every form of pro-life activity from street ministry to pro-life hiring practices of pregnancy centers. On the flip side there are four (4) other billsprotecting, promoting, and paying for Planned Parenthood.

New York did not actually legalize late-term abortion via the Reproductive Health Act. Late-term abortion has always been legally available to women in NY based on the broadly defined category of the health of the mother. The material change is that the new law defined abortion as a human right. On that point there is silence…

New York State is considering a measure targeting small non-profit pregnancy centers for investigation. The sponsors of the bill say that these organizations 1) “pressure women not to seek prenatal care or abortion services” and 2) “attract pregnant people by offering free services such as ultrasounds and counseling.”

A responsible journalist might ask: Where are the actual patient complaints? If these organizations are accused of keeping women from accessing prenatal care, why are they being accused of providing prenatal services like, ultrasound exams and pregnancy related counseling?

Also, if these agencies are doing wrong, why would NY politicians need to circumvent due process of law? Are abortion extremist politicians simply using tax dollars to bully those who disagree with them?

In 2019, New York legislature passed the Reproductive Health Act, pitting abortion rights against freedom of religion. The board is set. The game is on. The law paves the way for coercion of pro-life Christians, forcing participation in abortion against their deeply held religious beliefs through direct service or referral. Depending on how the bill is interpreted, refusal to participate in abortion could be viewed as denying a woman’s human right to end the life of her human baby.

This bill is dangerous to every person of faith. Before one’s beliefs can be articulated in the public square they must first go through the filter of secular policy? That is exactly how the RHA works—suffocating the expression of pro-life beliefs under the wet blanket of a secular state.

New York plans to pass the Abortion Expansion Bill in January. Governor Cuomo vowed to see it signed into law within the first 30 days of the 2019 session. Variations of this bill have been rejected for years by members of both parties. Why? Because it drastically lowers the medical standard of care for women.

Abortion extremism means abortion for any reason, at any cost. Is the 2019 New York legislature comprised of abortion extremists? The Reproductive Health Act is promoted by both the Governor and Senate Majority heir apparent Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

The bill blindly insists, “Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures performed in the United States.” Given the hundreds of medical studies (see scores of previous Real Abortion News posts) done world-wide demonstrating substantial increased health risks including breast cancer, future pre-term deliveries, and adverse psychological affects, the bill displays colossal arrogance.

49% of all New York abortions are covered by tax-payers, according to the recently published New York vital statistics report. That means that in 2016, 40,491 abortions were paid for by you and me, costing us $23.7 million. For perspective, 40,000 abortions represent almost half the population of Albany.

Now New York is looking to expand the amount spent on abortion. According to the memo attached to the Reproductive Health Act the purpose of the legislation is, “Intended to insure continued public funding of abortion services.”

A 2009 Guttmacher literature review reveals that “18-37% of pregnancies that would have ended in Medicaid funded abortions were carried to term when funding was no longer available.”

The formula is simple: Free abortion equals more abortions.

Imagine smoking is popular again and rich cigarette companies are giving lots of money to cigarette-loving politicians for re-election so that they can protect their business from damaging research showing the negative side-effects of smoking. With all that personal and political pressure, knowing your friend is smoking would you say anything to her?
