Counterflow with Buck Johnson

Ben Dixon is back with us today to discuss the political paradigm shifts we are in the midst of. Ben is an Orthodox Chritstian and writes over at dixonb.substack.com. His piece, System Error 2024, is where we pull some of our discussion from. Many folks across all religious and political spectrums are having issues understanding the winds of change that we are witnessing, and Ben is here to break much of it down from his perspective. We get into the PayPal Mafia, RFK Jr, Donald Trump, JD Vance, environmentalism, voting, Orthodox Christianity, and more.

Justin Marler is back on the show, and we are discussing the re-release and updated version of his cult-classic book, Youth of the Apocalypse and the Last True Rebellion. Justin went from a distraught, suicidal punk rock musician in the Bay Area to being an Orthodox Christian monk. While he was living as a monk, he created the Death to the World zine which has brought a huge amount of people to the Orthodox Church. He also penned his classic book, Youth of the Apocalypse then, and many years later now, it is VERY hard to find. That was until this new updated version that is now available. We discuss the themes of the original vs. what he had to update for the year 2024 and how much sin has evolved. Visit https://www.bigwhitestar.com for more of Justin's work.

This week, our friend Matthew Erickson is back with us to break down what all we learned from the landslide victory of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Matt and I both predicted this, and we get into the mandate for Trump, the future of presidential politics, the death of the legacy media, whether or not Orthodox Christians should support Trump, and a lot more.

Matthew Erickson is the host of the Kingpilled podcast and the Astrolabe daily show.

This is a very special episode.

My producer, Chris Williams, is a very humble and knowledgeable Protestant Christian. He's obviously been listening to every one of my episodes since he's producing them, and he is very interested in the Orthodox view of the world and also the differences between Orthodoxy and all the other Christianities. He approached me with the idea of getting an Orthodox priest to come on and chat with him about the questions he has regarding Orthodox Christianity.

Father John Peck was more than happy to join us in this discussion, and I think you'll find it very very useful. We get deep into Church history, theology, schisms, heresies, and more. This episode may demand a certain degree of humility for you. I think if you have that disposition, you'll gain a lot from it.

David Erhan joins us this week to discuss some of the most important theological topics in Christianity. We are on this earth for theosis. David gets into what that is, the scriptural proof regarding theosis, and why other Christianities outside of Orthodoxy don't always emphasize it. We discuss the ever-so-important essence/energies distinction, and we relate much of these things to the Orthodox Saints. Many outside of Orthodoxy are troubled when they hear of "praying to Saints". Why do we do that, and what does it mean?

My guest this week is Olga Ravasi, the executive director of the Christian Orthodox Coalition. At the COCUS, they aim to Educate, Empower, & Engage collective Christian Orthodox Voices in the cultural & social discourse as well as the civic process via the conservative virtues of our faith. Olga was part of the Trump campaign, as were several members of the team at the COCUS. With a Trump victory likely coming in November, they aim to get a seat at the table where issues like Spiritual Culture Wars, the War on Children, Open Borders & Immigration, Endless Wars, Law and Order, Religious Freedom, Globalization, and other issues important to Orthodox Christians will be represented.

In late August of 2024, Conrad Franz (of the World War Now podcast) and I were part of a small group of Orthodox Christian pilgrims who traveled to Mount Athos with Father Peter Heers. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and in this episode, we detail our trip along with a slideshow of pictures and videos. Mt. Athos has been the heart of Orthodox Christianity for over a thousand years. I hope this episode gives you some perspective and good insight as to what it is all about and what it was for us!

The second annual Philip Ludwell III Southern Orthodoxy Conference was held in my town of Lockhart, TX, from September 6th-8th, 2024. For the folks that purchased a VIP ticket, we held a live recording of this podcast in a nice, private room with seating, cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres. My guests, as you can see, were very special, and I wanted to hit them with a litany of topics to discuss. We hit things like: Israel, Ukraine, the explosion of Orthodoxy, Baptism vs. Chrismation, the need for spiritual fathers, online Orthodoxy, and much more. I was very fortunate to have a wonderful crowd, fantastic production, and top notch guests. This one is special.

Again, special thanks to all my guests (in case the list is too long for the title!): Fr. John Whiteford, Fr. Ignatius, Fr. Peter Heers, Jim Jatras, Conrad Franz, and Dissident Mama.

Tommy Green, lead singer of Holy Name and former lead singer of Sleeping Giant, joins me to discuss his journey from Pentecostal to Orthodox, his music and the influence of Orthodoxy on it, his involvement in ministering to victims of human trafficking, and more. From Facedown Records:

"A season of death and profound brokenness caused Tommy Green to dive deeply into the very beginnings of the church, seeking for the connection between holy orthodoxy and liturgical practices, and today's modern Pentecostal charismatic church. He found beauty in a hidden treasure that he didn't fully understand, his pain driving him to a place he never intended to go. Orthodox imagery is extremely influential to the graphics and lyrics of Holy Name's work. The holy orthodox church and the historical origin of Christianity became very important to Tommy personally and that's why the imagery seems so saturated with traditional ancient orthodox Christianity."
