Self-Awareness is a reflective process for assessing behavior, not just for self-improvement, but how our actions impact those around us.  Muirhead et al (2020) research on intersectionality theoretical framework consists of the interconnectedness of race, gender, class, privilege, and disadvantage of individuals' that provide meaning and significance to these social elements by acknowledging the complexity of the human experience. 

In this Learn Series Part 1, we will deeply dive into Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)  in Learning Environments in the State of Florida. Dehumanizing Florida legislative laws that have impacted what is being taught in the classrooms in Florida is not only impacting the students and their families but school administrators, educators, and administrative and support staff in Florida that are being adopted by other states in the United States to duplicate. 

What to expect in this Learn Series: 

We will give you the background legislative laws that have been enacted in Florida

We will give examples of the actions being taken by these laws on Critical Race Theory, Inclusion, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

We will discuss how the Safer Communities Act 2022 addresses Mental Health in Schools. Still, Florida State Legislators' perspectives and legislation are disconnected from the link between Mental Health and SEL.

We will discuss the research from expert and theoretical frameworks

We will introduce Self-Awareness and Self-Management Strategies to help with Self-Reflection

We will invite everyone to what you can do to become an advocate and practitioner of Social and Emotional Learning for others to take responsibility for the same.

Phillip Minor bio Upon retirement in 2008, Phillip W. Miner relocated to Jacksonville, FL. where he has been actively engaged in

volunteer work in the cultural arts, youth development & education and elective office politics. Miner was a

volunteer docent at the Ritz Theatre and Museum and coordinated an educational program with Duval County

Public Schools. He remains active with several Democratic Party organizations in Duval County. His political

service includes: Duval County Democratic Executive Committee (DCDEC) Precinct Committeeman; former

Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee; past member of the Communications Committee and former

Blogmaster. He is a member of the Duval County Asian Pacific, Black, Hispanic and Senior Caucuses and the

Democratic Women’s Information Network/DWIN.  He served as Media Contact and Chair of the Public

Relations and Membership Committee, Chair of the Campaign and Legislative Affairs Committee, 2nd

Ellis (2020) states it's not just adverse experiences at the individual level that we must consider when thinking about our students but compounding stressors at the community level, including violence, racism, discrimination, and lack of economic mobility, report to class with our kids" (p 53).

This podcast is to fulfill an assignment from Trauma-Informed Educational Practices PhD Program course Trauma-Informed Educationall Practices within Community Contexts and Conditions. 

According to the assignment, An educational perspective, researchers have found that "poverty influences the emotions, shapes behaviors, changes the structure and processing of the brain, affects cognitive capacity, and influences attitudes" (Izard. p 6, para 2). 

This podcast will identify the historical economic factors that contribute to trauma, many of which are closely related to cultural issues.  A case study about Leo, African Amercian man,age 56 years old, lives in the Southeastern of the USA Florida in African American working class community who still suffering from long term complexities of trauma.

This episode is an academic assignment for my Doctoral Program on Trauma-Informed Practices and I will share with you what I have learned thus far and hope that this will provoke each of you to have these discussions with your healthcare providers, family, friends, co-workers, church members to learn to not to ask "what is wrong with this person" try asking "what happened to this person?"  We do this we are practicing empathy to get the person mental healthcare to obtain the trauma-informed care that is needed.
