European Union countries kicked off their coordinated effort to vaccinate millions. Cases of the new variant were confirmed in several European countries, including Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. All linked to people who arrived from the U.K. More than 40% of England’s population is now living in Tier 4 restrictions.
December has been the nation's deadliest month since the start of the pandemic, with more than 63,000 Americans lost in the past 26 days. November saw about 36,964 deaths. Both President-Elect Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci have said the darkest days are ahead of us, with Fauci anticipating a "surge upon a surge."
But, there are the vaccines. And the head of AstraZeneca said researchers believe its shot will be effective against the new variant behind the rapid surge in Britain. He also said they’ve figured out a “winning formula” making the shot as effective as rival candidates.
New York Health officials are investigating a Brooklyn-based healthcare provider for possibly violating state vaccine distribution guidelines. A statement says ParCare Community Health Network "may have fraudulently obtained vaccine, transferred it to facilities and diverted it contrary to the plan to administer first to frontline healthcare workers, as well as nursing home residents and staffers.”
As if we needed coronavirus to generate more problems, the World Health Organization says a mutant, more powerful strain of gonorrhea is spreading worldwide, partly because the pandemic has more people on antibiotics and limited access to healthcare. This new “super gonorrhea” has apparently become resistant to antibiotics that normally could have handled it.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Glasscock, TX. Pleasants, WV. Montour, PA. Bent, CO. Oldham, TX. Perry, IL. Richmond, VA. Montgomery, IL. Hudspeth, TX. And Lawrence, IL.
There are now 7,736,834 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, Virginia, Texas, Georgia, Missouri, Illinois, and Colorado.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Texas, Tennessee, California, Oklahoma, and Alabama.
The infection reproduction rate is currently highest in Maine, West Virginia, Hawaii, South Carolina, and Idaho. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Alaska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana.
There’ve been a total 333,115 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.76%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Pennsylvania 124. New York 117. Illinois 112. Massachusetts 100. Florida 78. Tennessee 69. Texas 58. Indiana 42. And Arkansas and Mississippi with 41.
Globally, there are now over 22 million active cases, at 22,079,007.
There were 510,505 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 748,974 reported on December 11.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 127,740. The U.K. 30,501. Russia 28,284. India 20,333. And Brazil 18,479.
There have now been 1,764,317 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Down 6% over 14 days.
