First it was hydroxychloroquine. Now the antiviral drug Remdesivir’s positive effects are being challenged. A study coordinated by the World Health Organization says the drug had little or no effect as a treatment for Covid-19 patients. That study has not yet been peer reviewed.

Cries of alarm and anger in Paris after the French government imposed a curfew on almost a third of the population. Business owners are calling it “catastrophic.” ICU wards in the city could hit 90% capacity by next week. The curfew will last at least four weeks and confine citizens to their homes from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Canada does not want Americans crossing its border. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the United States must get control of COVID-19 first. In the past week, 13 states that border Canada have been breaking infection records.

There may not be a reason to avoid going to the dentist. A survey found fewer than 1% of dentists nationwide were positive as of June. Of course, the survey was done by the American Dental Association. But it’s the first large-scale collection of U.S. dentist infection rates.

First Lady Melania Trump said hers and the President’s teenage son Barron tested positive. He exhibited no symptoms and has since tested negative.

The Director of the CDC is not sounding encouraging about families getting together for Thanksgiving. He told the nation’s governors small household gatherings are becoming a growing source of Covid-19 spread.

France declared a public health state of emergency, giving officials greater powers to impose containment measures. A statement read, “The COVID-19 epidemic justifies the declaration so measures can be adopted proportionate to the public health risks.”

Iran marked its highest single-day record for new deaths and infections; 279 people killed and 4,830 new cases. It’s the third time in a week that country has hit new highs. There are travel bans to and from five major cities, including Tehran and the holy city of Mashhad, that aims to reduce risks ahead of a religious holiday Saturday.

COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on college football. The head coach of #2 ranked Alabama, Nick Saban, was diagnosed with coronavirus. The 68-year-old is undergoing additional tests to make sure his results were not a false positive. Athletic director Greg Byrne also tested positive.

A 25-year-old man in Nevada becomes the fifth known person in the world to contract the coronavirus on two separate occasions. In fact, he became more seriously ill after the second infection. He has recovered but reinfection casts doubt on the prospect of protective immunity and vaccines.

Speaking of vaccines, Johnson & Johnson paused its trials due to an unexplained illness in a study participant. The online system used to enroll patients in the study has been closed. And Eli Lilly’s late-stage trial of its monoclonal antibody treatment, also paused over potential safety concerns.

Is it safe to fly? Well, a study by the International Air Transport Association shows about 1 billion people have traveled by plane since the start of 2020, and just 44 cases have been confirmed among them. It did state "there is no way to establish an exact tally" of positive cases connected to air travel.

Restrictions are increasing across Europe. Italy and France are restricting parties and limiting restaurants and bars. The Netherlands closed all bars and restaurants, and to discourage partying at home, banned the sale of alcohol after 8pm. The Czech Republic is closing all schools and Latvia is ordering teens to switch to distance learning.

An athlete many say is the most famous in the world has tested positive. Cristiano Ronaldo has been sent away from his Portuguese football team and is self-quarantining at home. He appears to be asymptomatic. So far none of his teammates have tested positive.

While the world waits for a coronavirus vaccine, Americans are increasingly saying don’t bother. A Gallup poll shows willingness to get such a vaccination has dropped 11 points, falling to only 50%. But at the same time, the percentage of Americans inclined to not go back to normal daily activities until there is a vaccine hit a new high of 26%.

The head of the World Health Organization called a reliance on herd immunity “simply unethical." It was noted that to get herd immunity, about 95% of the population must be immunized and that simply exposing people to the virus is not how you get to herd immunity.

The Vatican said four Swiss Guards tested positive and have symptoms. Infections have been surging in surrounding Italy. The Swiss Guards provide ceremonial guard duty during papal Masses, man the Vatican gates and help protect 83-year-old Pope Francis.

Countries across Europe are tightening restrictions as cases increase. Europe surpassed 100,000 daily cases for the first time last week. The Czech Republic has Europe’s highest rate of infection. In July, that country held a “Farewell Covid” party to celebrate their victory over the virus.

JFK and Newark airports have partnered with XpresCheck to offer rapid testing facilities that provide results in 15 minutes. It’s the sister company of XpresSpa, which offers mani-pedis and massages at airports.

Australian scientists say the virus that causes Covid-19 can survive up to 28 days on surfaces. That includes phones, stainless steel, vinyl, and cash. The national science agency said they also found the virus survived longer at lower temperatures.

New York authorities have handed out over $150,000 in penalties since Friday in its new hot zones. That includes five fines for the maximum allowable penalty specifically for Orthodox religious gatherings. The crackdowns have mostly been in Brooklyn and Queens.

The World Health Organization is now appealing to world leaders to stop using lockdowns as the primary control method for the coronavirus. The statement claims the only thing lockdowns achieved was poverty.

A tipping point. That’s where the UK’s deputy chief medical officer says the kingdom is with COVID-19. Jonathan Van-Tam said the worst is yet to come if “we do not all act now”. The worry is winter. He says, “We’re in the middle of a severe pandemic and the seasons are against us. Basically, we’re running into a headwind.”

And Iran announced its highest single-day death toll with 251 confirmed dead. Two senior officials have been infected. The total confirmed death toll now stands at 28,544, making Iran the hardest-hit country in the region. Nearly 4,500 patients are in critical condition.

Researchers have used CRISPR gene-editing technology to create a test that detects the coronavirus in just 5 minutes. No expensive lab equipment needed, and tests could be run at doctor’s offices, schools, or office buildings. The tests work by identifying a sequence of RNA unique to the novel coronavirus.

MP’s have been warned the number of ICU patients in the north of England will overtake the April peak if infections keep rising at the current rate. New restrictions are expected next week for millions, restrictions that especially target bars, pubs, and restaurants.

In France, Paris hospitals have been told to activate emergency measures to cope with its rising numbers of patients. COVID patients in the Paris region now fill about 40% of intensive care units. Stricter restrictions were also put in place in four big cities were the virus is spreading.

And in Canada, public health officials are asking residents to stay home as much as they can. Last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared a second wave was already underway. There’s been a 40% rise in the last week alone.

COVID-19 is most often brutal to the respiratory system. So there’s some irony in a report from Altria, formerly Philip-Morris, that the pandemic has caused a reversal of longtime declines in smoking. Cigarette sales are unexpectedly high.

An internal FEMA memo indicates the outbreak has infected 34 White House staffers and other contacts in recent days. And, according to the House Administration Committee, there are now 123 Legislative Branch employees or contractors who have tested positive — or are presumed positive.

Wisconsin health officials announced a field hospital will open next week at the state fairgrounds near Milwaukee to handle a surge in cases that threatens to overwhelm hospitals. Wisconsin has become a hot spot over the last month.

The federal government is cracking down on hospitals that don’t report complete COVID-19 data. That information includes the number of patients and ventilators they have. After multiple notifications, hospitals could lose reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid.

Case numbers are high in the UK, but scientists say more than 80% of people who tested positive in a survey didn’t show any of the main symptoms. That includes cough, fever, and loss of taste and smell. That suggests future outbreaks will be hard to control without broader testing to catch “silent transmission.”

The games have been happening, now the crowds might get back into NFL games. The Miami Dolphins have been given permission from Florida’s governor to allow full capacity at Hard Rock Stadium. 65,000 seats. However, the team will likely restrict the number itself.

CNN reports the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as several senior Pentagon leaders are quarantining. A top Coast Guard official tested positive and had been in contact with those now quarantined. The Pentagon is conducting additional contact tracing.

The FDA made it clear it must see two months of follow-up data after volunteers get their second dose of vaccines in clinical trials before it will grant even emergency use approval. This makes it fairly clear, no vaccine until at least early December.

New restrictions for a state that’s been struggling with a surge in the virus. Wisconsin’s Governor limited the size of public indoor gatherings. The state has become one of the worst hot spots over the last month. Some experts say it’s because of colleges and schools reopening and people getting tired of wearing masks and social distancing.

Remdesivir, a drug that has become key in treating COVID, has a problem. There’s not enough of it. Shortages have led to rationing in the UK with mounting on the manufacturer, Gilead, to let other companies supply it. Remdesivir is under patent.

Here’s a story that will not shock you. A new study shows that American adults are drinking more since the pandemic started. Consumption is up 14% compared to a year ago. But the drinking is especially pronounced with women. Their consumption is up 17% and there was a 41% increase in heavy drinking for women.

The CDC revised its guidance yesterday, acknowledging the virus can sometimes spread through airborne particles that can “linger in the air for minutes to hours” and among people who are more than 6 feet apart.

With the President returning to the White House, Chad Gilmartin, principal assistant press secretary, tested positive this weekend, according to CBS News. He is one of Press Secretary Kaleigh McEnany's main deputies and she too, reported testing positive.

The head of emergencies at the World Health Organization said their “best estimates” indicate about 10% of people worldwide may have been infected. That’s more than 20 times the number of confirmed cases.

The back and forth continues in New York City. Sunday, Mayor Bill de Blasio decided to roll back business openings in certain zip codes. Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said, no. And his approval is required to cancel the openings.

The Regal theater chain is shutting down all 536 of their locations Thursday. That’s more than 7,000 movie screens going dark. The chain said the closure reflects "an increasingly challenging theatrical landscape." About 40,000 employees in the U.S. are facing a furlough.

Florida has gone the furthest in lifting restrictions, especially on restaurants. The role of ensuring safety has shifted to business owners and customers. Restaurants can operate at 100% with no restrictions and local governments can't limit indoor seating by more than 50%.

Quite the opposite in New York City. Mayor Bill de Blasio has asked the state for permission to close schools and put restrictions back on nonessential businesses in several neighborhoods. New shutdowns would happen starting Wednesday in nine city ZIP codes.

A limited number of people made the Muslim pilgrimage and circled Mecca after Saudi Arabia lifted coronavirus restrictions in place for months. A maximum 6,000 pilgrims a day can enter the Grand Mosque, but only Saudi citizens and residents.

As the President is expected to return to the White House today after his stay at Walter Reed, COVID-19 testing is underway at the University of Utah before the vice-presidential debate Wednesday. Anyone in the secured perimeter must test negative. It’s mandated by the Presidential Debate Commission, advised by the Cleveland Clinic.

Japanese designer Kenzo Takada, famous for creating the international luxury fashion house Kenzo, died in Paris yesterday of Covid-19 related complications. He was 81.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Emmons, ND. Dickey, ND. Rawlins, KS. Logan, ND. Glacier, MT. Potter, TX. Shawano, WI. Toole, MT. Sussex, VA. Ness, KS.

There are 2,573,263 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Texas, Alabama, and Illinois.

The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Iowa.

The retransmission rate is currently highest in Wyoming, Montana, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New Mexico. While the lowest retransmission is found in South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Texas, and Georgia.

There’ve been a total 209,820 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.87%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 38. Louisiana 32. Georgia 28. California 26. Texas 25. Arkansas 18. Illinois, Tennessee and Pennsylvania all with 17. And South Carolina 11.

Globally, there are 7,732,128 active cases.

There are 308,935 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, compared to a high of 332,905.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 74,767. United States 34,066. France 12,565. Russia 10,499. And Brazil 8,456.

There have now been 1,035,853 deaths worldwide. Up 5% over 14 days.
