Girl Camper

Crossing The Impossible: The OG of Overlanding - Patty Upton

Listen Later

Welcome to another episode of the Girl Camper Podcast! I'm your host, Lesa McDermott, and today I had the pleasure of interviewing overlanding legend, Patty Upton. Known for her extraordinary journey across the daunting Darien Gap, Patty's story is one of adventure, resilience, and unyielding spirit.
Introduction
Patty Upton, alongside her husband, Lauren, achieved what many deemed impossible. They successfully traversed the Darien Gap, a perilous and nearly impassable stretch in Central America. This remarkable feat earned them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first to conquer this challenging territory by land. Overlanding is all about the journey and this was one heck of a journey.
Patty’s Early Life and Journey
Patty’s passion for exploration was ignited from the very beginning. Born into a military family, she was constantly on the move. Her adventures took her around the globe, but Panama, where she spent her high school and college years, became a significant chapter in her life. It was in Panama that she first encountered the insurmountable challenge of the Darien Gap.
The Darien Gap Expedition
In 1977, Lauren Upton embarked on his first expedition through the Darien Gap with a CJ 7 Jeep, marking the beginning of many trials and tribulations. After several attempts plagued by unforeseen dangers and mechanical failures, they finally succeeded in 1989 with the Sandship Discovery, a 1966 CJ5 Jeep. Patty’s recount of their 741-day overlanding journey through the 125-mile stretch is a testament to their determination and resourcefulness.
Life Beyond the Gap
Patty and Lauren’s journey didn’t stop at the Darien Gap. They continued their adventure, driving across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, completing their overland trip in Norway.
Conclusion
Patty’s story is a beacon of inspiration for all aspiring adventurers. Her message is clear: anyone can achieve their dreams with enough determination and grit. As Patty now seeks a permanent home for the Sandship Discovery in a museum, her incredible adventures serve as a reminder to us all that impossible is just an opinion.
Stay tuned for more fascinating tales from Patty Upton in future podcast episodes. Until then, happy camping and always chase your next adventure!
