  • Personal Style Won’t Save You

We kick off this week's ep with some pop culture bitties; Sofia Richie Grainge is pregnant, Millie Bobby Brown launches a clothing line and our take on the Oscar snubs and noms.

The biggest story of the week was that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed by the academy for their work in Barbie. We discuss the ~discourse~ that surrounded this, including the online outrage. We reference 'The Barbie Snub Outrage Proves That When It Comes To Diversity, We’re Only Thinking Of White Women' by Alexander Koster for Refinery29 Australia.

Next, why is TikTok shouting about the need to ditch trends altogether in favour of personal style? Is this mission misguided? We break down the takes from TikTok users Alina Timo and Mina Le as well as Flex Mami's latest video essay.

For recommendations, Jas loved the 2023 remake of The Colour Purple, while Maggie read Love Stories by Trent Dalton.

Next, there's something going on with Gen Alpha. The tweens are getting blasted online for partaking in skincare culture and trawling the aisles of Sephora. We reference this Allure article by Shelby Wax titled ‘Sephora Tweens Are Nothing New’ .

This convo rolls into another about why Gen Z is so afraid of ageing. We reference this BOF piece titled 'Gen-Z Is Already Worried About Looking Old' by Joan Kennedy and 'Why Is Gen Z So Scared Of Ageing?' by Kitty Lloyd for Fashion Journal.

In recommendation land, Maggie loved this newsletter by Freya India titled You Don't Need To Document Everything, while Jas devoured Poor Things by Alasdair Gray over the break.

  • Here We Go Again

Black Friday purchases and seeing Rebecca Black on a Friday. Rosalia and Allen Jeremy White are a thing and Emma Chamberlain is getting criticised on TikTok (again).

In a three-hour chat with YouTube platform Colin and Samir, Emma shares that she hasn't checked her bank account in years. We chat about whether the criticism is warranted and how much money you need to be happy.

Next, Taylor Swift's publicist, Tree Paine, calls out gossip site Deux Moi for making claims that Taylor and her ex, Joe Alwyn tied the knot in secret. Spicy.

EmRata has caused some outrage over a fatphobic photo with French publication, M Magazine. We reference a piece in Dazed by Gina Tonic titled 'EmRata’s Latest Photoshoot Is a slap in the face for plus size people'.

This leads us to a discussion about the Ozempic craze. We reference this brilliant piece 'How Ozempic Killed Fashion's Appetite For Body Positivity' by Amy Francombe for the Evening Standard. We also reference a piece in ELLE titled 'Fashion, Ozempic and Me'.

  • We're All In The Group Chat

    Hey pals,

Maggie is back from India and we’re behind the mics once again.

We kick off with a debrief of Mags’ incredible trip and discuss Travis Kelce’s digital footprint.

Next, a report has revealed that the world's richest 1% emit as much carbon as the poorest 66%. This news was released in the same week as a young Taylor Swift fan tragically passed away at the Eras concert in Rio DeJaneiro due to the unseasonable heat and negligence of the venue.

TikTok comedian, Matt Rife, has turned on his majority female audience this week after opening up his Netflix special, Natural Selection with a domestic violence “joke”.

We discuss why he’d turn on the people who made him, the genre of ‘cancelled comedians’, and why women fans are the best fans to have.

We reference this article by Jared Richards for the ABC, titled, The Rise and Immediate, Potentially Strategic Downfall of Matt Rife

Two friends have gone mega-viral on TikTok after airing both sides of a friendship fallout on the app.

Former best friends Kelly Kim and Joanna Lee both took to the app to set the record straight on the actions and ghosting that occurred after Joanna was accused of flirting with Kelly’s boyfriend.

We chat about the virality of this drama, why we love to dissect things when we have no skin in the game, and if actual drama is the new reality TV.

This week, we both recommend SALTBURN. Honestly, just go see it.

That’s all for now! Jas and Mags xo

Next, the trailer for the new Mean Girls movie that’s based on a musical, that’s based on a movie (phew) is out. We discuss our thoughts on the cast, the marketing and why we’d watch it.

In other news, a Bloomberg article by Jessica Karl titled TikTok Is Turning the Publishing World Into Fast Fashion has been making the rounds. We discuss the opinion piece and our own thoughts on BookTok’s publishing machine. Thank you Jessica for reading out an excerpt of your own words.

Maggie also references this piece from The Guardian.

  • Cry Me A River

    Hi pals,

In this week’s ep, we have a catch-up about Maggie’s travels to China after a little hiatus and what our summer plans are.

In pop culture land, two big stories have dominated the entertainment news cycle. We first chat about Matthew Perry’s tragic death at just 54. We share our thoughts on the parasocial mourning of his famous character and how he really wanted to be remembered.

Next, Britney Spears’ memoir, The Woman In Me has raced to the top of the book charts and Jas has gobbled it up. We share the biggest talking points from the memoir and why Justin Timberlake better watch his back. (Kidding, kinda).

On account of us missing last week’s ep, we share two recommendations each. First up is Jas’ with Is Taylor Swift Impossible To Critique by Naina Yadav for The Swaddle. We share our thoughts on 1989 TV and her up-level to billionaire status. Maggie also references the new book by Shameless Media, 4AM featuring columns by columnists including your gal, Maggie! Buy it here.

Jas has also been loving The Bear season two on Disney+ (sorry, so late to the party).

Maggie has been watching teen dramedy Netflix show Everything Now and listening to the podcast, Believable: The Coco Berthmann Story about an internet-famous woman who tricked the world into thinking she had cancer.

It would be irresponsible and wrong of us to release an episode on celebrity news without us mentioning the most tragic world news of the last month; the Israel/ Palestine conflict. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and are holding space for our Muslim and Jewish listeners and friends. Please educate yourself and stay up to date via reputable news sources. We can’t look away now.

With a tagline proclaiming she’s “exactly like other girls,” Lucy Neville is a Sydney-based writer and influencer who's committed to creating a safe and happy corner of the internet.

Lucy has been one of our most-requested guests over the years so we had to get her on the mic to learn more about Australia’s new agony aunt, how she navigates the emotional fatigue of her 'Let It Out' series, and what it's like having thousands of people sharing their innermost secrets in your DMs.

  • Who Is Snail Girl?

    Hi friends!

To start off this pop culture ep, we chat about the Zillennial Cult Comedy Cinematic Universe (as coined by The Ringer). Featuring the likes of Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebri and Molly Gordon, we ask why the 27-year-olds feel like our friends and the new era of storytelling.

For the first time we chat about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. A few weeks after they were spotted at an NFL game together, we discuss the media's reaction to the news and the theory that Taylor attending the Jets game was an SEO play.

Next, a piece by Sienna Ludbey of Hello Sisi for Fashion Journal went semi-viral across Australian media. “Snail girl era”: Why I’m slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy, charts the work/life balance movement that chooses a slow life over the previous girl boss eras we've seen.

We discuss our own thoughts on this trend and whether it's a privileged take.

Finally, writer Laura Pitcher summed up our thoughts from a few weeks back on the curated celeb medical photo dumps. In the piece, titled Full Body Scance, Health "Journeys" and The Psychology Of The Medical Photo Dump for Nylon, Laura discusses why the doctor's office has become a hub for content creation.
