Every Division III men’s basketball program has played at least one game now so it’s official game on for the 2025-2026 season! Join us this week as we react to another exciting week of action and try to make sense of it all, starting with a scan of the country in our “four-point play” to start another episode.

There is still another week until the first D3hoops.com Top 25 poll of the regular season but that might be for the best given what has happened so far. We talk about the Top 25 picture, the struggle to figure out just how much to react to a result and what, if any changes, are in play when new ballots are submitted a week from now. We also check in on how we did in our week two picks and have five more games to pick against the computer line for week 3 before wrapping up with two questions in the mailbag.

The opening weekend of the Division III basketball season is in the books! Not every team made their debut during the first weekend of play but there were a lot of great games as we start learning just what each team is, or could be, for this season. A new week is here and it’s a week with a Division III basketball games! We celebrate the new season by debuting a new segment we’re calling our “four-point play” in which we scan the four points of the compass and talk about what is catching our eye or on our minds in the North, South, East and West. We also take a look at Matt’s preseason Top 25 ballot and talk about how it compares and contrasts to the total D3hoops.com preseason poll released last week.

This week’s show also features audience-submitted hot takes and bold predictions for the seasons and we were joined on the show by Ryan Scott to help react and discuss to how our viewers are feeling about the upcoming season. We also provide some hot takes and bold predictions of our own before finishing with our first picks slate of the season.

We are always excited for a new season of Division III basketball but this is the show we do each preseason that really takes the anticipation to another level. As we have done in previous years, we’ve combed through schedules and compiled our list of the Top 50 games of the men’s basketball season taking place in the month of November.

This season is sure to get off to a fast start with so many great matchups between teams meeting up on campus and at a number of great events around the country. There are even more great games to anticipate that we don’t even know about yet because they are guaranteed good matchups based on the first day of some early-season tournaments.

It’s way too early to know who the conference champions will be during the 2025-2026 Division II basketball season but that won’t keep us from trying to guess! We’re back with year three of our conference champions draft contest with the usual suspects of Karl Barkley, Bob Quillman and Ryan Whitnable joining us to go through eight rounds of picks.

Each conference can only be picked once so once someone makes their pick of a team to be a conference champ, that conference is off the board. Five contestants making eight picks each means 40 of the 42 conferences will factor into the picks while two will be left on the board. Also going without a pick will be the Coast-To-Coast Conference because they do not have official conference regular season play.

We follow up the draft with some talk about our thoughts on the overall landscape informed by our draft prep and other relevant topics as we look forward to another great season.

The D3 Datacast isn’t usually an interview show but we can pass up the chance to have an annual preseason chat with Calvin head men’s basketball coach Bill Sall! The Knights endured a tough non-conference schedule a year ago then ripped off an undefeated conference season on the way to securing the MIAA tournament championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament.

It’s time to declare the Division III basketball offseason over and start looking at the season ahead! We fired up the D3 Datacast computer for another season of hoops and kick off the return of our weekly shows taking a look at preseason efficiency ratings. New and improved for this season, our men’s basketball preseason efficiency ratings are calculated with the computer having the added “knowledge” of transfers and returning production.

Join us for this episode as we take a look at the preseason efficiency ratings that will serve as the basis for the season while the computer adjusts to the new season over each team’s first eight games. We review the preseason Top 40 picture, focus in on some big movers from last season’s final ratings, and make our picks of some teams we think might outperform or underperform their preseason numbers.

Our NPI summer series wraps up with Fact or Fiction! In this episode we feature five prompts about NPI and answer whether they are based on fact or fiction fueled by a misconception or misunderstanding.

NPI doesn’t consider head-to-head? NPI doesn’t count every game? NPI gives everyone an at-large chance? The different non-conference multiplier in men’s basketball is a good idea? More teams still have an outside shot at a tournament bid going into the final week of the season?

We have seen how NPI opens up tournament consideration to a wider set of Division III men’s basketball teams than the previous regional ranking/committee selection system - but does NPI actually give every team a chance at an at-large tournament berth?

Observers of the previous system know that it seemed some teams with poor SOS numbers just couldn’t win enough to overcome it. With NPI we can run scenarios and get direct answers without having to guess how the human members of the RACs or National Committee might view a particular resume.

In this episode we take a look at two cases from last season of teams that ranked with the worst two strengths of schedule according to NPI to see if there is a point at which they enter the at-large picture if enough losses were turned to wins. The results might be surprising, and do they have implications for how a team should put together their schedule? Join us as our NPI summer series continues!
