The podcast currently has 54 episodes available.
What started as a simple tweet grew into a full episode of The D3 Datacast! D3Hoops.com columnist Ryan Scott once wondered about a fairly simple question: what if every team made the Division III men’s basketball tournament?
That question struck a chord with Matt and it’s one that has been rattling around in the back of his mind ever since. In this week’s show we take an honest effort at answering the question, each taking a different approach to trying to make a full national tournament with every team participating and bring it to life. What might that look like? How would it work?
Since the idea originated with Ryan it was only natural for him to join us as a special guest for this episode to add his own ideas into the mix and for a discussion on just how feasible a tournament like this might be, the strengths, the weaknesses, the positives and the negatives.

The D3 Datacast is back in season mode with weekly episodes starting with this show taking a look at preseason efficiency ratings for the 2024-2025 Division III men’s basketball season.
These ratings are not meant to be predictive for how the season will (or even might) turn out, but give The D3 Datacast computer a starting point to smooth out early-season results. Each game played will reduce the weight of the preseason projection on a team’s rating by 1/8th so that by the time a team has played eight games their rating is entirely based on their in-season performance.
Some teams will out-perform and others will under-perform their preseason rating, and that makes for some fun to talk about what we know compared to what the computer knows. We wrap up this show by each picking a team in the Top 25, Top 100 and outside the Top 100 to finish the season above their preseason rating and one to fail to meet their preseason rating.

NCAA Division III celebrated its 50th Anniversary last season. Which men’s basketball programs have proven to be the very best over the course of that half century? Taking inspiration from a November 2020 CBS Sports article that ranked the top all-time men’s basketball programs in Division I, we applied their methodology to the Division III landscape.

We Are D3 has grown from just a participant in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) to a brand arching over much more of Division III basketball. We Are D3 held their first pro combine this spring to help former Division III basketball players reach their goal of playing professionally. In this episode of the D3 Datacast we talk with Mike Rejniak, head coach and general manager of We Are D3 about their expansion into a pro combine as well as the team's performance in TBT.
After a disappointing showing at TBT 2022, We Are D3 took the Kansas Jayhawks alumni team down to the wire in 2023. They may not have gotten the win but they enter TBT 2024 with much more respect. Instead of being seeded as a big underdog as they have in the past, We Are D3 will be a 4-seed in Dayton for a first round game against 5-seed Sweet Home Alabama.
Hear from Mike about this year’s roster and their first round matchup. It’s always great talking with Coach Rej and we hope you enjoy this episode!

Coverage and exposure of NCAA Division III is at an all-time high thanks to people like Karl Barkley. He has created a wide-range of resources and content around Division III athletics such that there is something for everyone no matter how they might intersect the D3 world.
D3Direct provides an invaluable resource for prospective student-athletes through things like camp lists, recruiting advice and education about important topics like college admissions and financial aid.
Even if you’re not a student or parent anticipating a college search or recruiting process, D3Direct’s content featuring former D3 athletes who have moved on to professional careers or interviews with current student-athletes are great for any fan to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of Division III.
We really enjoyed our conversation with Karl and hope you enjoy it as well!

After a great 2024 Division III basketball season we have a good idea how the teams stack up against each other, but what about conference to conference? With the help of conference efficiency ratings, the massey ratings, NCAA Tournament results and some good old fashioned internet “yeah but I think” we put each conference into tiers then rank the top ten based on the 2023-2024 season.
Where does your favorite conference rank? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out and hear our thoughts about each tier and the conferences they feature.

We were pleased to be joined by Ben Kaplan to talk about his new book Pipeline to the Pros, How D3, Small-College Nobodies Rose to Rule the NBA. As a former Division III guy himself, Ben is well-positioned to write on this topic.
We heard from him on his background and how that may have laid the foundation for this project, the early days of how this project got started and ultimately completed, then dug into some of the central figures of the book and the themes and lessons they reveal as a number of people with Division III ties have risen through the ranks to leave their mark on the NBA throughout its history.
Our thanks to Ben for having advanced copies sent to us. The book is available for pre-order now and officially releases on April 16, 2024.
