Jack Pinho returns to D3 Glory Days after breaking 4 at the BU Valentine Invite! We had him on originally as Episode 52 in the summer of 2021. He was coming off a strong track season but still had ambitions of breaking 4. We said we would have him back on the show once he did it and sure enough, he did!
Jack brings a great perspective on how to balance life and running. He takes us through the struggles he had leading up to this and how his why kept him going when he was hurt for four months in 2022.
There's been a lot of talk about the sub 4 barrier lately and Jack shares his perspective as to why it's still very important to him. He has his eyes set on big goals like making it to a US Championship or US Trials.
We hope this gives you the motivation to continue after your post-collegiately goals.

The 19 year old 4x4 record was taken down at the BU Valentine Invite. Held by Lincoln (PA) since 2004, it was a record the Rowan team was eyeing. After winning last year's indoor 4x4 after waiting out a lengthy protest period then losing outdoors, this group was ready to turn heads this season.
They go into what practice is like with a group of All-Americans, their thoughts on the elevation of D3 sprinting and what they're looking forward to next.

We turn the Mics around and talk about our own running. 2022 wasn't the best year for your hosts but we're working on turning things around. We will always highlight the positives in running but sometimes we need to talk about the lows in running. Noah goes into his injury history and why he decided to finally get his surgery. Stu talks about his running and what he's trying to do despite being 4 years away from his last good race.
Hope this helps those dealing with the lows in their own running right now. Remember, you get to run so make it fun!

In her first marathon since the 2020 Olympic Trials, Sara Passani dropped a 6 minute PR to run 2:34 at CIM. An injury kept her out of the race the year prior and with the standard getting faster, she was ready to give it a shot. Prior to the race, they decided not to focus on the standard but instead focus on getting really fit. As the miles clicked off, she could tell it was going to be a good. As a she crossed the finish line with tears down her race, she realized what went into this day.
After graduating in 2015, Sara gave up running at a competitive level to focus on her career at a private equity firm. She returned to the sport after a friend introduced her to a potential training partner that was running Grandma's Marathon in 2019. After obtaining an OTQ and competing at the 2020 trials, Sara knew there was more in the tank.
Sara take us through her running journey that emphasizes balance. Her perspective on what is important to keep her running fast is a great lesson for all.

The cancellation of his senior season left Jarrod Ottman motivated to see what he can do. He was coming off new PRs on the track and wanted to see where he could take his running.
When races began to pop up again, Jarrod was making big jumps in his times resulting in breaking 15 minutes for the first time. He saw early success in the roads running 68 minutes and then 66 minutes for the half.
During this time, he built a strong relationship with Pro Runner Parker Stinson. Stinson ultimately got Jarrod to move out to Colorado. Despite a drop of a hat move and rough first few workouts, Ottman dropped his half PR to 64 minutes.
Flash forward to CIM, Ottman ran the first half with D3 Glory Days Alum, Alex Burks. From there, Jarrod continued to move up and ran 2:16.
Hear about his race and his progression story.

Happy New Year! We kick off 2023 with MIT's Head Cross Country Coach, Riley Macon. We talk with Riley about his transition into the head coaching position after Halston Taylor retired, what MIT's training looks like, and how Riley is able to use running as an outlet for his team's intense academic obligations. We go into how they prepared for the national championships and how they handled last year's runner-up performance as motivation. Riley brings a lot of positive energy to the MIT practices to ensure they're having fun while they pursue big goals.

Read the Proposal below!
Proposal One
Change the way National Championships are scored in Track & Field so that every finisher is scoring for her/his team.
Rationale:
*Raises the competitive quality of Nationals by making every place matter. Instead of an all or nothing approach many athletes exhibit trying to make finals or finish in the top 8, it allows them to be more tactical and keeps people mentally engaged and committed throughout the competition.
In distance events, it keeps athletes fighting to the end of the race even when they know they can no longer be top 8 or advance to finals.
In field events, it helps athletes focus on getting a mark (staying in the ring, staying on/behind the board) to move up the standings instead of "going for broke" and risking a 3 foul performance just to make finals.
The athletes now compete with the knowledge that 9th is better than 11th, which is better than 15th, which is better than 20th, etc, instead of thinking, "I only have value to my team if I'm top 8".
*Fan friendly and helps Track & Field make more sense to casual fans. In sports, it is hard for people to understand why the person who finishes 9th is treated the same way as the person who finishes 17th. It doesn't make sense, and the differentiation between EVERY position at the championship will help provide meaning to athletes and fans alike.
*It allows athletes, coaches, and teams to have value at the National Meet by returning to campus after their performances with points. Instead of teams with no All-Americans all returning to campus with 0 points and nothing for their schools to show off or brag about, they now have a more realistic score and placement nationally, and something more tangible they can share.
*It is more likely to reward the best teams in the country with Trophy winning performances while still allowing teams that may be heavily reliant on one or two superstars to win a trophy with dominant performances.
We recognize this is a substantial change from how things have been done, but T&F needs to continue to evolve to reach more athletes and fans in a meaningful way. Gone are the days when the best programs would have dual meets throughout their season and athletes would compete in 3-4 events at meets multiple days per week. This is another step forward to make the sport more rewarding, beneficial, and understandable for athletes and fans alike.
Scoring Suggestions (NCAA Committee could iron this out):
Option One: Winner gets the same number of competitors in the field + 5 / 2nd place gets 3 less / 3rd place gets 3 less / 4th place through last place receive the number of points based on how many people s/he beats +1
Example (20 person field)
1st: 25
2nd: 22
3rd: 19
4th: 17
5th: 16
20th: 1
*This would provide extra incentive to finish in the top 3, with a larger differentiation between those spots, as top three has always been a significant number in Track & Field thanks to the popularity of the Olympics.
*A DNF, a DQ, or a 3 foul is eliminated and receives zero points, so not all points are guaranteed to be awarded.
Option Two:
Winner receives 25 or 30 (or some number that would be large enough to accommodate any field size the NCAA currently offers) and the Committee adjusts the scoring differently based on the field size for each gender.

Donna Ricks has been the Head Coach of the Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field team at Carleton College for 30 years. They have multiple individual national champions in track, countless All-Americans, but finally earned their first ever team trophy in cross country after placing fourth at the 2022 D3 XC National Championships.
Donna was a Multi in college and set University of Minnesota Mankato’s heptathlon record. She used her experience working with different coaches and understanding all the events into her coaching experience. She credits being able to coach multiple events at practice to her time as a multi athlete.
She spoke about women in coaching and the potential for why, especially in cross country and track, there is a decline. She suggested more support staff to take on the roles coaches are having to do that they may not be necessarily trained for (mental health, sports psychology, etc). She credits her longevity to the passion she has for the sport and how much fun she is having everyday.
Donna brings so much energy to her profession and this episode that you can tell why she is having so much fun. And remember, don’t lay down after a race.
Donna’s Stats:
19 XC National Qualifying Teams
7 Individual National Champions in Track and Field
60+ All Americans in XCTF
