One of the most vivid images from today is Absalom—the man described as flawless from head to toe—getting his famous thick hair caught in the branches of a large oak tree. As his mule rides out from under him, he is left dangling, leading to his eventual death at the hands of Joab’s men. It’s a literal “hanging by a thread” moment that signals the end of the rebellion but the beginning of a father’s deepest grief.

What makes today truly special is that we get to “hear” David’s internal thoughts through Psalms 3 and 63. While his people were bringing him physical food because he was “hungry and weary in the wilderness,” David was telling God, “My soul thirsts for you.”

Our Word of the Day is Earnestly.

David shows us a three-step progression for a heart that earnestly seeks God:

1. The Thirst: Acknowledging our deep need for Him.

2. The Satisfaction: Realizing that God’s love is better than life itself.

3. The Security: Clinging to the strong hand that holds us securely.

David was “resolute” yesterday and “earnest” today. When you are facing a “family brawl” or a “he-said-she-said” situation, is your first instinct to defend yourself or to earnestly seek God’s face? How can you model David’s “active submission” in your current struggles?

Lord God, we thank You that we can find You when we seek You. We pray for anyone today who feels like they are in a “parched and weary land.” Whether they are dealing with financial struggles, a troubled child, or a heavy heart, let them feel Your strong right hand holding them securely. Help us to seek You earnestly—before anything else—and find our satisfaction in Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading features a striking scene: King David, fleeing for his life from his own son, climbing the Mount of Olives. He is weeping, his head is covered, and he is barefoot—all signs of deep mourning and humiliation.

It’s impossible to read about David on the Mount of Olives without fast-forwarding to the New Testament. Both David and Jesus went to this mount in a state of extreme distress. Both were facing betrayal—David by his son and his advisor Ahithophel, and Jesus by His friend Judas.

Our Word of the Day is Resolute. The nature of the resolute spirits of David and Jesus was slightly different. David was reactive to his circumstances, yet resolute in accepting God’s discipline. Jesus was intentional, resolute in His mission to save humanity.

Some look at David’s life and think he “got off easy” for his sins with Bathsheba and Uriah. But as we see him today, crushed by the realization that his punishment is deserved, we see the true fruit of a redeemed life. David didn’t have a “pity party”; he had a penitent heart. He never repeated his past sins. Instead, he allowed the weight of his consequences to drive him closer to God.

David was willing to let the Ark go back to Jerusalem and leave his fate in God’s hands. Is there something you are “clinging to” for security that you actually need to release to God? What does it look like to be resolute in God’s will today?

Father, we thank You that even when our lives are swirling with confusion and darkness, You are our Anchor. Give us a heart like David’s—a heart that is resolute in following Your will, no matter the cost. When we feel the weight of our past mistakes, help us to turn to You in humble submission rather than running away. It is difficult to read the account of Tamar, Amnon, and Absalom. It feels like watching a “train wreck” in slow motion. The royalty of Israel begins to crumble under the weight of the very sins David himself struggled with—lust, cover-ups, and a disregard for the lives of others.

David’s passivity in this chapter is striking. He was angry when he heard about Amnon’s crime against Tamar, but the text doesn’t show him taking any action. This vacuum of justice fueled Absalom’s bitterness, leading him to murder his own brother and flee into exile. The family was physically and emotionally separated.

The highlight of today’s reading comes from an unlikely source: a wise woman from Tekoa. She used a parable to show David that while life is fragile—like water spilled on the ground—God is in the business of restoration.

This is the central theme of the Gospel. We were all separated from God by our sins, like water that can’t be gathered back up. But God “devised a way.” He didn’t just ignore the debt of sin; He sent Jesus to pay it.

We often think of David as the giant-slayer, the musician, and the great king. But today, we see David at his worst. It’s a reminder that no one is immune to temptation, and that “secret” sins have a way of spiraling into public consequences.

It started with a rooftop glance and ended with a death warrant. David tried to manage his sin by bringing Uriah home from the front lines, but Uriah’s integrity was David’s undoing. Uriah refused to enjoy the comforts of home while his brothers-in-arms were in the field. To cover his track, David orchestrated Uriah’s death. It was a calculated, cold-blooded move that “displeased the Lord.”

God loved David too much to let him stay in his sin. He sent Nathan the prophet with a story about a rich man stealing a poor man’s beloved pet lamb. David’s righteous anger flared—until Nathan pointed the finger. David didn’t make excuses. He didn’t blame Bathsheba. He simply said, “I have sinned against the Lord.”

In Psalm 51, David begs God to purify him. We talked today about how this is a “transitive verb”—an action being performed on us by God. Bathsheba used water for her ceremonial purification, but David knew water couldn’t touch his soul. He needed the Holy Spirit to do the deep work of cleansing his conscience.

David wrote that his sin “haunted him day and night.” Is there a “secret” weight you are carrying that needs to be brought into the light? How does the promise of 1 John 1:9—that God will cleanse us from all unrighteousness—give you the courage to confess?

Father, thank You that You do not leave us in our sin. Thank You for the “Nathans” in our lives who tell us the truth, even when it hurts. Create in us pure hearts today. Today, we see two very different kinds of “summons.” One leads to a feast, and the other leads to a fight.

David asks a question that few kings in his position would ask: “Is anyone left in Saul’s family I can show kindness to?” When he finds Mephibosheth, a man who was “crippled in both feet” and living in Lodebar (which basically means “no pasture”), David doesn’t see a threat to his throne. He sees his best friend’s son. He summons him not to a trial, but to a permanent place of honor.

In the middle of our reading, we get a deep dive into the Levite musicians. David was incredibly intentional about building back the spiritual life of the nation. He didn’t just want soldiers; he wanted singers. We meet men like Heman, a musician well-acquainted with sorrow (check out Psalm 88!), whom David placed in charge of worship. David surrounded himself with people who would point the nation back to God.

Leadership isn’t always smooth sailing. When David tried to show kindness to Hanan of Ammon, bad advice led to the humiliation of David’s men. This resulted in a massive war. But look at Joab’s faith: even when battle lines were “in front of him and behind him,” he didn’t panic. He deployed his men and trusted God for the outcome.

Mephibosheth had to trust David’s character to show up when he was summoned. Is there an area of your life where you feel God is “summoning” you to something new? What fears are holding you back from sitting at His table?

Lord, thank You for summoning us to Your table of grace. Help us to be like David—searching for ways to show kindness to the overlooked. Give us the courage of Joab when we feel surrounded by challenges, and remind us that You are the one who gives the victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading is a pinnacle moment. It’s where the “details” of the law meet the “promises” of the future. David is settled in his palace, and for the first time in a long time, the land has rest. But instead of kicking back, David looks at the Ark of God sitting in a tent and thinks, I want to build God a home.

What follows is the Davidic Covenant. God tells David that while he won’t be the one to build the physical temple, God is going to build David a Dynasty. This is the moment where God links the promise made to Abraham (blessing the nations) to a specific royal line.

• Solomon: Would build the physical temple.

• Jesus: Would establish the eternal kingdom.

When David hears this, he doesn’t brag. He sits before the Lord and asks, “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” (2 Samuel 7:18).

In chapter 8, we see the results of this covenant in action. David is winning battles against the Philistines, Moabites, and Edomites. But notice what he does with the “famous” status God is giving him: he takes the gold, silver, and bronze plunder and dedicates it to the Lord. David knew that he wasn’t the “Mighty Man”—God was.

Even in the middle of victories, David looked back at the history of his people. He knew that for generations, Israel had lived under the “curses” mentioned in Deuteronomy because of their disobedience. In Psalm 60, David cries out, “Restore us to your favor!” He understood that the only reason the kingdom was being established was because of God’s mercy, not the people’s perfection.

David was overwhelmed by the fact that God wanted to use his “house” for an eternal purpose. How does it change your perspective to realize that, through Christ, you are also an heir to this eternal dynasty?

Sovereign Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness across generations. Thank You for the promise of King Jesus and for making us part of Your eternal family. Help us to walk in the same humility we see in David—turning every victory back to You and trusting Your timing when You say “no” to our plans. In Your Name, Amen.

If yesterday was about the tension of waiting and the weight of God’s holiness, today is about the explosion of joy that happens when we walk in obedience. For years, many of us have heard Michal described simply as the “bitter wife” who didn’t like David’s dancing. But when we look at the chronological story, we see a woman who was used as a political pawn, separated from two husbands, and lost her father and brothers. By the time David returns, he isn’t the young shepherd boy she once saved; he’s a battle-hardened king with many wives. While her contempt was out of line, understanding her pain helps us see why she struggled to join the celebration. It’s a reminder that a hardened heart toward God often starts with layer upon layer of human hurt.

The word of the day is Esteem. We usually think of this as an opinion, but for David, esteem was an action. He esteemed God by:

1. Obeying the Law: He made sure the Levites carried the Ark exactly as Moses had commanded.

2. Sacrificing: He offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to honor God’s presence.

3. Worshiping Personally: He was willing to be humiliated in the eyes of others to show his high regard for the King of Kings.

It feels like the Israelites are finally “back” to being the people God called them to be. After hundreds of years of broken instructions and forgotten laws, a king is finally empowering the priests and leading the nation in true, biblical worship.

Can you imagine the atmosphere in Hebron today? 340,000 soldiers, all of “one mind,” eating and drinking for three days to celebrate their new King. This wasn’t just a political shift; it was a spiritual homecoming. After years of civil war and division, Israel was finally united under the man God chose in a sheepfold years ago.

What strikes me most about David’s early reign is his constant communication with God. When the Philistines attack, he doesn’t just rely on his “mighty men.” He asks, “Shall I go?” When they attack a second time, he asks again. God’s answer is poetic: “Wait until you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees.”

This is the secret to David’s success. He didn’t move until he knew the Lord had gone out before him.

In the midst of the celebration, we encounter the story of Uzzah. It feels jarring and sad—he was only trying to stop the Ark from falling! But as we’ll see in later readings, God had given specific instructions on how the Ark was to be carried (on the shoulders of Levites, not a cart). It reminds us that God’s favor is found in obedience to His Word, not just in our good intentions.

The word of the day is Favor. We often think of favor as “getting what we want,” but in the Bible, favor is the result of obedience. When we align our lives with God’s desires, His approval and support rest on the work of our hands. Like Noah, Jacob, and Moses before him, David found favor because he was willing to do what God asked, even when it was difficult.

Today’s reading feels like a high-stakes political thriller. We have a commander switching sides after a scandal, a revenge killing in a gateway, and a puppet king murdered in his own bed. It’s messy, it’s violent, and it reveals the dark side of human ambition.

Abner, the commander of Israel’s army, decides to hand the kingdom over to David after a falling out with Ish-bosheth. But Joab, David’s own commander, can’t see past his own grief and bitterness. He takes matters into his own hands and kills Abner. David’s response is telling: he doesn’t celebrate the removal of a powerful adversary. He mourns. He fasts. He sings a funeral song. He wanted the people to know that he was not a man who climbed to power over the bodies of his rivals.

Then come the two captains, Recab and Baanah. Thinking they’ve done David a massive favor, they murder Saul’s son and bring his head to the king. They expected a reward; they got an execution. David reminded them that God had delivered him from every trouble—he didn’t need their treachery to secure his throne.

Ecclesiastes 4:4 tells us that much of our labor is driven by “rivalry between a man and his neighbor.” It’s vanity. It’s striving after the wind. Whether it’s wanting the best yard in the neighborhood, the top spot on a bestsellers list, or a seat on a church committee, rivalry robs us of joy and distracts us from the eternal kingdom.

David’s life serves as a beautiful reminder: when we are focused on God, our rivals become people to be loved and mourned, not obstacles to be removed.

Father, thank You for the reminder that You are the one who establishes our steps. Help us to stop fighting for positions that You haven’t designed for us. If we are carrying spirits of jealousy or rivalry, we surrender them to You now. Teach us to love our enemies and to trust Your perfect timing in our lives. Amen.

There is a shift in the air today. The conversation between David and God has returned to center stage. Before David moves an inch toward his new destiny, he asks, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?” and God answers, “Yes... Go to Hebron.”

Finally, David is anointed king, but only over the tribe of Judah. Meanwhile, Saul’s commander Abner sets up Saul’s son, Ish-bosheth, as a rival king. It’s the beginning of a long, wearying war between the two houses. We see David’s influence growing stronger while Saul’s legacy weakens. It’s a reminder that God’s timing is often a slow burn rather than an overnight explosion.

We can’t ignore the “cracks” in the story. During this time in Hebron, David takes multiple wives. While polygamy was a common status symbol for kings of that era, it was a direct violation of God’s instructions in Deuteronomy 17. David was a man after God’s own heart, but he was still a human being who struggled with the culture of his day. These choices would eventually bring heartache to his household.

Our Word of the Day is Brotherhood. The highlight of today’s reading is the list of David’s “Mighty Men.” These were the original Action Figures! From Jashobeam, who faced 800 warriors alone, to Benaiah, who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day, these men were extraordinary. But why did they follow David?

They didn’t just join him because he was powerful; they joined him when he was a fugitive in the Cave of Adullam. They were drawn to the “Tender Warrior”—the man who could play a harp and write a psalm but also stand his ground against a giant. That is the essence of brotherhood: a community linked by a common interest and a shared faith.

We see this same brotherhood (and sisterhood!) growing in our own community group. We are gathering around the Word of God, encouraging one another in our “caves,” and cheering each other on as we seek to follow the King of Kings.
