Just as David composed songs for his sorrows, we can bring our laments to the One who is the Alpha and the Omega, knowing that the story doesn’t end in the grave.

God’s plan for David—and for you—doesn’t depend on us having a perfect day. It depends on His perfect faithfulness.

Our Word of the Day is Betrayal. We see it in its ugliest form today. Saul, consumed by jealousy, orders Doeg the Edomite to slaughter eighty-five priests because they helped David. It is a chilling reminder of what happens when a leader uses their power to go against what is right. Tricia shared about her research into the Spanish Civil War—a “Valley of Betrayal” where leaders also turned against their own people. True betrayal happens when those in power choose their own interests over the lives of those they are meant to protect.

If you look closely at David’s early Psalms, you’ll notice a powerful sequence. He starts with a cry of desperation, moves into the reality of his hardships, and then always pivots back to: “But God, You are my rescue.” Even in Psalm 142, written in the dark of a cave, he declares, “You are all I really want in life.”

David’s heart for his people is on full display when he risks his life to save the town of Keilah from the Philistines. Yet, when he asks God if the people of Keilah will hand him over to Saul, God says, “Yes.” It’s a stinging blow. David saved them, and they were ready to sacrifice him. David was a leader to a band of outcasts. Even if you don’t have a “title,” you are a leader to the people in your life—your children, your coworkers, your neighbors. How can you, like David, “inquire of the Lord” before making decisions that affect those around you?

While David was running, he wrote Psalm 34. It’s filled with famous lines we often see on plaques, like “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” but we have to remember the context. David was hungry, alone, and dodging spears. When he says, “He keepeth all his bones; not one of them is broken,” he is speaking of his own experience, but he is also looking forward to Christ. Centuries later, John would point to these very words to show that Jesus’ bones were not broken on the cross, fulfilling what God had decreed.

Our Word of the Day is Trust. It’s the firm belief in the reliability and strength of someone. Think of a toddler being thrown into the air by their father—they giggle and yell “Again!” because they have zero doubt those arms will catch them. David had that kind of trust. He didn’t always see the way out, and Saul didn’t stop hunting him right away, but David knew God was his fortress.

It’s easy to think that following God leads to an easy life, but David’s story tells us otherwise. His success led to Saul’s jealousy. We see five attempts on David’s life in today’s reading alone! From spears in the palace to assassins at his front door, David was constantly under threat. Yet, in the middle of that chaos, he penned Psalm 59: “You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me. For you, O God, are my fortress.”

It’s a common Sunday school lesson to call David the champion, but the truth is that God is the Champion. David simply allowed himself to be used. Whether your “giant” is a health issue, financial stress, or a broken relationship, remember that these things may loom 9 feet tall, but God stands even taller. When our Champion stands tall, the giants always fall.

David stripped off the armor that slowed him down so he could run his race with endurance. What “weights” or “sins” are currently slowing down your Christian walk? How can you “strip them off” today to run more steadily toward what God has for you?

It’s a reminder that God isn’t looking for a “good show” or impressive sacrifices—He’s looking for a heart that listens.

It appears throughout these chapters: God sent Samuel to Saul, Saul was sent on a mission, Samuel was sent to Bethlehem, and eventually, Jesse sent David to the battlefield. The difference between Saul and David is how they responded to being sent. Saul was sent with authority and used it for himself. David was sent as a delivery boy and used the opportunity to defend the glory of God.

When David arrived at the camp, he heard the same taunts from Goliath that the rest of the army had heard for 40 days. But because the Spirit of the Lord was powerfully on him, he didn’t see a 9-foot giant—he saw an “uncircumcised Philistine” defying the Living God. David’s obedience in the small task of bringing bread and cheese positioned him to be the solution to a national crisis.

We are all in a process of being built up by God’s Word so that we can be sent out. Being “sent” might mean answering a call to help in the nursery, being a friendly face in your neighborhood, or taking a bold step into a new career. Whatever your “sending” looks like today, do it with a heart like David—one that honors authority and values God’s reputation above all else.

David was “sent” on a very ordinary errand that led to an extraordinary moment. What “ordinary” task in your life right now might be part of a bigger plan God is unfolding? How can you show obedience in that small thing today?

He’s looking for donkeys and ready to give up until his servant suggests a better plan. Even when he is chosen by lot to be king, he isn’t standing front and center—he’s hiding in the baggage! It’s a powerful contrast to Moses, who was also reluctant but eventually leaned into God’s strength to become a pillar of faith.

It means showing aversion, hesitancy, or an unwillingness to take on a role. We see this crack in Saul’s armor from the very beginning. While God’s Spirit does come upon him to win a great victory against the Ammonites, that underlying hesitancy—that lack of a heart seeking after God’s instruction—sets the stage for the drama to come.

While Saul is reluctant, Samuel is resolute. As he steps down as judge, he reminds the people that God’s hand is only as heavy as their rebellion. His heart for the people is so evident: “As for me, I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you.” What a challenge for us! Even when others make choices we don’t agree with, we are called to continue teaching what is good and right.

One of the most sobering moments in today’s reading is when Israel demands a king. They looked at the nations around them and felt like they were missing out. They wanted something “vibrant” and “visible” to lead them into battle. Samuel warned them of the cost—the taxes, the servitude, the loss of freedom—but they were determined to be “like everyone else.” How often do we trade God’s perfect, invisible leadership for something tangible but taxing?

It literally means “stone of help.” Samuel set this stone up to commemorate divine help after a massive victory. It’s a physical marker of a spiritual truth: “Up to this point, the Lord has helped us.” It’s not just about the past; it’s a promise for the future. If He helped us then, He will help us now.
